I'm the original owner of a 2000 R1 that has been turnkey for 15 years. Sadly this year is the exact opposite. The city I live is doesn't seem to have good mechanics anymore so I've had a buddy working on it who is a mechanic by trade and motorcycle enthusiast. He works on his own bikes.
I went to start it in April and it would turn over but not fire. To determine if it was carbs or electrical I poured a little gas down each bowl and it fired right up until the fuel was used. Replaced the spark plugs anyway. My buddy pulled the carbs and had them hydrosonically cleaned and he went thru each jet to make sure it was clean. He replaced the fuel filter as well. I rode it about 2 miles home and it seemed fine. The tank was full and I had to store it 2 months until the end of June. It started fine with the choke on but as soon as you attempted to give it any gas without the choke, it would stall. I was able to limp it back to my buddies with the choke on (kind of making a farting noise). He didn't get to work on it until late July and told me to replace the fuel pump which I did (chinese one). I was able to get it back last week and it rode home fine. I was out riding for about 3-4 miles yesterday when I started hearing the farting sound again, shortly after it stalled as I was riding. I tried to give it choke, no choke but as soon as you tried to give it gas it stalled. I was able to get it started and go about 2 blocks until it stalled again. The battery was close to dead then so I pulled it and walked home. After charging it for 2.5 hours I put it back in my bike and it started fine with no choke, just throttle. I was able to ride almost all the way home when the farting sound started again and died. From there, it didn't matter (choke or no choke) it would not allow me to give it any gas without stalling. It now sits in my shed and I'm going to give my buddy one more shot before I take a chance on a new bike shop in town. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
