Hi there everyone, Ive been riding for about 7 years, had a few gsxrs all 1000s and had my 03 r1 for the last 2 years that I traded a pro street trans am for. I have had some crazy car builds and love turbos. I'm a mechanical engineer in my day job and also do a lot of car tuning. Currently looking to buy an engine dyno and a chassis dyno to get my business started in my new home in Texas.
Anyways.... I've been looking for a bit of info on turbocharging my 03 r1, came up with only a hand full of actual builds with no real details. So I have some questions and will eventually turn this into a build thread. I already fabricated the airbox, next is the header or manifold, and deciding which turbo to go with, leaning towards a k04 turbo off a cobalt ss, a td04 off a Subaru, or a gt2860. All will work with the bike.
My first question is where would be the best place to tap into for the oil feed to the turbo?
Next, is the any other bike maker that has a header setup similar to ours? It would be a lot easier to get a pre made turbo manifold from a gsxr or cbr than fab from scratch, but I can do it if I need to.
I have a full pc5 setup with autotune, ignition module, quick shifter, and pod display for logging. I've been reading the fuel system can keep up if I'm not pushing past about 6 psi boost. Looking for around maybe 220 whp which seems realistic, what can these stock long blocks take?
Does anyone have a table of what the stock ignition timing looks like? I'd like to know the actual values as opposed to me just taking timing out under boost blindly.
My experience in cars is that e85 or a mix of 50% e and 50% 93 can be great for boost, and the mix is not as harsh on the fuel system or require a ton of fuel added but yields the same results as full e85. The mix will yield 99 octane and only needs about 15% fuel added., but I'll have to check my injector duty cycle to see if it can handle it. Anyone have any e85 experience?
Any input is appreciated, any anyone with a build similar, I'd really appreciate your opinion. Thanks guys.
