Not a good sign but twice now I've found coolant on the ground. This was the first year the bike has not been in a heated area for the winter but I did make sure I had full anti freeze in the radiator but now questioning if I should have drained the fluid all together.
The image here shows in green where it's flowing down the side of the engine and red is roughly the area it coming from. It looks like the top of the engine area.
I'm now trying to go over diagrams of the coolant system to see if any of the hoses go to this area/top of the engine. When I get the chance I'll need to tear it apart to look down from under the tank.
Any idea of what else could leak coolant around the top area?
my buddy had same leak.his was caused by a zip tie cutting a small coolant hose that runs under the tank on the side of the frame..you cant see it without lifting the tank...wasnt a big deal to repair..just get new tubing and you should be good..
double check your fluid level when your done.good luck bro
Hello I having this problem on my 2016 r1. I see the leak coming from where the thermostat assy located. Should I replace thermostat assy. While I chance the gasket that next to it?
Ty
Well, pretty sure I figured out the issue and looks like it is the Thermostat housing. Maybe the O-Ring or the housing itself. After pulling it apart I came across the same issue in this posting http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/8461993-post13.html
Will order up a new seal tomorrow and hopefully that's it.
It could be any of 4 or 5 components in that area. I've had my thermostat housing leak (repaired with the original seal and RTV silicone), the rubber hose (#4 in the diagram above) leak, and the hard plastic tube that runs outside the frame on the right side of the bike leak (this one is a *very* common failure on our bikes).
If I were in your shoes (and I'm not), then I would spend the extra ~$50 on ALL of these parts I mentioned and replace them all at once. You'll be digging under the tank anyway... it will solve your problem and push back the next occurrence.
Replace the b.s gaskets, they're cheap, and the hoses for the thermostat are as well. Mine on my 5VY didn't have any issues visibly but upon taking the whole thermostat housing out was able to see that one of my hoses quit on me. Replaced hose and a few gaskets/o rings and now I don't get a drop on the ground thankfully. Hope this helps.
