Dot 5 fluid

Does anyone have any experience with the brake fluid from the local parts store? Seems to be inexpensive, and It's time that I flush mine.

what are your uses of your bike? certain brake fluids (even those dot 4 varieties) can have higher boiling points than the typical auto parts store dot 5 fluids.

Intresting, I thought the standards would be the same across the board.

Mix dot 5 fluid in a system already running dot 3 or 4 and you're fukced.

You can run 5.1 but it's poo compared to the proper high end dot 4.

the only way you can run the 5 is to completely flush the system, but you will never get it all out. the 5 is silicone based and DOES NOT mix with the others. realistically the only way to run it is to have all new components.

just get the 4

I figured with new goodridge steel lines, and cleaning the bottle and caliperS that I should be ok. I dont know.

What's a beter setup, one line from cylinder splitting into two, or two lines from cylinder running to calipers? In other words, what stops quicker and has a better feel?

Glycol-ether (DOT 3, 4, and 5.1) brake fluids are hygroscopic (water absorbing), which means they absorb moisture from the atmosphere.

silicone fluid should be used only to fill non-ABS systems that have not been previously filled with glycol based fluid. Any system that has used glycol based fluid will contain moisture; glycol fluid disperses the moisture evenly throughout the system and contains corrosion inhibitors.

Silicone fluid does not allow moisture to enter the system, but does not disperse any that is already there, either. A system filled from dry with silicone fluid does not require the fluid to be changed at intervals, only when the system has been disturbed for a component repair or renewal.

Non-hygroscopic fluids (e.g. silicone/DOT 5-based formulations), are hydrophobic, and can maintain an acceptable boiling point over the fluid's service life, although at the cost of potential phase separation/water pooling and freezing/boiling in the system over time - the main reason single phase hygroscopic fluids are used.

The United States armed forces have standardised on silicone brake fluid since the 1990s. Silicone fluid is used extensively in cold climate, particularly in Russia and Finland, as glycol based fluids have to be replaced at regular intervals.

Ive ran dot 5 in my 06. I just drained it then bleed the system. Ran like that for 2 years. No issues. Only thing with dot 5 the brakes feel a bit spongy. I was gonna go back to dot 4 but i sold it sooo.

That is good to know. Nobody want's a spongy feeling brake pedal/lever. This is more than enough reason not to use silicone based brake fluid.
