Hi,
I changed my oil and filter a couple of months ago and today oil started leaking from the top edge of the filter.
It only comes out when I rev and is a steady stream over the top of the filter so I am thinking I pinched the O ring when I installed it and now its given up on me.
Can I take the oil filter out without draining the oil?
Maybe put the bike on a front stand to tip it backwards?
I don't mind cleaning up a bit of oil I just want to know if I can do this without dumping a load of oil out of my engine.
Yeah the thing is I stripped the thread on the drain bolt and had to have it heli-coiled and wired to stop it leaking, the shop s=told me it would hold but I would need to replace the oil pan when I next do an oil change.
I have a replacement pan but don't want to put everything apart until I need to do the next oil change.
So thats why I was wondering if I can do the filter swap without draining the oil... I know I know I should have been way more careful when I changed the oil before and am paying for it now :icon_eek:
Yeah, do it cold, oil will be mostly in the pan and not the motor. Might lose .25 qt. make sure the oil filter mating surface is clean and free of debris.
How did you pinch the o ring? Did you not apply clean oil to it and torque it down?
to finally answer your question YES you can take the filter off without draining the pan.
it sits much higher than the resting oil does.
and all of your engine covers can also be removed without draining the oil
Maybe you should consider getting one of those Fumoto (or similar copycat brand) drain plug valves for the oil pan to avoid stripping it in the future if you find yourself having problems with that. You could also just install one to the existing oil pan if you wanted and seal it in there as a permanent fixture.
Do not put your bike on the front stand only. Might cause you another costly mistake. The rear stand stabilizes the bike so you can use the front stand.
Thanks for that I was not sure if it would be ok o do so. Looks like I can remove the filter with tilting the bike and not lose too much oil.
