Rea axle nut torque specs----

For the 2004 R1 is the rear axle nut torque really 109 ft/Lbs? That just seems a bit high and I just want to confirm. I have been torquing it to this level and just want to be sure --- seems a bit high. I had some problems last fall with failure of some rear bearings - I did a seach and couldn't find anything.

I don't bother with the T-Wrench. I just sinch her down.... ?? I may be screwing up but it has worked for years this way....

Ironman I could have swore I read something about this before, but I can't for the life of me remember what the final outcome was.... I'd hate to give you bad advice but my R6 says 80 foot pounds of torque.... Oh shit just saw this, it say 110nm which I think is metric torques = 80 footpounds...

150 NM, which converts to between 109 and 110 ft-lbs.

108 ft lbs on the 02-03's so this is prolly right-

Well, I have .jpg images of all the torque specs on the 04' in case anyone needs them I was just verifying. Thanks for the help.

The manual says 108 ft lbs but thats way to tight thay are nuts you are putting stress on your berrings with this ft poundage i talk to racers real racers absolute cycle performance race team and they go 75ft lbs they said mine when i torqued it at 108 was wayyyy to tight !

Excuse me, but it is not "way to [sic] tight".. It is the correct torque spec. Let's not put out bad information and have a bunch of owners undertorquing their rear axle nuts, thanks.

i agree besides there should be no problem with the bearings.

What was that one torque that was way off????? Oh yeah the rear sprocket bolts has a typo, too tight.....

if it binds for some reason when I torqued it then I WOULD back it off though a little, and drill a safety hole through the axle and nut.

When applying a torque up to 109 ft/Lbs I find it difficult to tell if it would be binding or the wrench is just about to click. So, I can't really get the gist of your post.

I meant the wheel, if it seemed to have more friction than it did before I took it off, the bearings might have some pressure on them. If it went away with like 90 ft/lbs, I'd back it off to that.

ok do what you feel is right . You will have NO safety issues with 75-80 ft lbs ...what you will have is peace of mind that your not warping your berings

You should instead state something along these lines: "In my opinion, the Yamaha engineers are incorrect in spec'ing the rear axle nut at 108 ft-lbs. In my opinion that is way too tight, and will risk warping your rear wheel bearings. How the Yamaha engineers missed this I don't know. In my opinion, you will be fine torquing to 75-80 ft-lbs, but be aware that this is substantially below the published yamaha factory recommended specs"

If you said something similar to the above, as opposed to an unsubstantiated and potentially dangerous contradiction to the published torque spec, I would not have objected....
