Idling and Octane...

My 08 R1 has been idling rough as crap recently, at points it actually sounded like a 3 cylinder

Thought I would give it a run on higher octane fuel and now it seems a hell of a lot better, fires up keen and just sounds tickety boo.

The petrol here in Scotland is categorized as follows:

Ordinary unleaded - 95 RON
Super unleaded - 98-99 RON

Anybody else find their R1 runs better on higher octane?

BTW, ive not changed the exhaust/filters as of yet as its only 4 months old.

I'm not sure how the octane ratings go over there but I've been running mine on Shell 93 for a while now. I don't think the octane has anything to do with your idle characteristics though. Mine did the same thing when it was bone stock, I kinda liked it actually. I wouldn't go over 93 for any reason unless you had a compression ratio or timing adjustments that warranted it. The object is to run the lowest octane possible without pinging. Keep in mind also that these bikes are right at 13:1 so I'm sticking with 93 myself. Although I have heard of people running 89 without issues but I wouldn't recommend it. Again all of this info is based on US octane ratings.

Cheers for the input...hmm yeah its a tricky one as US bikes are set a little different then ours from factory I think?

Would be interesting what the forum technical gurus have to say...

From the Manual...

Recommended fuel:
PREMIUM UNLEADED GASOLINE
ONLY

"Your Yamaha engine has been designed
to use premium unleaded gasoline
with a research octane number of
95 or higher. If knocking (or pinging) occurs,
use a gasoline of a different
brand. Use of unleaded fuel will extend
spark plug life and reduce maintenance
costs."

I have been using Ordinary unleaded - 95 RON, I guess it needs higher...

well if that's working for you, then I say stick to it.

here in the states, it's recommended to get 91 (or 93 in some areas) which is the highest you can get without going to race fuel

There is something to be said about fuel types the contain Ethanol. The highest octane level that I can get here in Ontario is 94, but it still contains a % of Ethanol. I find that Yamaha's in paticular don't run well at all on fuels that contain any Ethanol. The highest Shell gasoline available here is 91(V-Power), but it contains no Ethanol, and my bike runs 100x better on this grade of fuel.

Maybe check and see what % of Ethanol is in the fuel you are purchasing, regardless of the octane level.

While I agree with your post it should be said that the ethanol is not brand specific but rather gas station specific. For example we've got 3 Phillips 66 stations around my area, one of them advertises "no ethanol in our gas" while the others have the usual 10% or less sticker on the pumps. Unless they've been falsely advertising then I'd say that each station gets a choice of ethanol or no ethanol. Coincidentally that is the same gas that I used to run in my bike up until about a month ago. I started having black rings around the tips of my GYTRs and it was a beast to clean them. I switched to Shell 93 and the rings went away. While the Shell gas does unfortunately have ethanol in it, it does seem to be burning much cleaner than the Phillips 66 gas did. Just my 2 centacos.

The US octane is quoted as (R + M)/2. In others our pump ratings are average of RON and MON. RON is always higher than MON or average. We (USA) run our bikes on 91 which is the highest, at least in my area.

Korean gas stations offer one octane and it's supposedly around 90 according to the MON scale. Every bike here runs on that and runs fine and afaik, bikes sold on the Korean market are fairly equivalent to the European market.


Some people go to therapy, the rest ride motorcycles.

highest we get on our pumps are 91

thats our premium, since our emission laws are very strict. They see it as if its any higher, at idle its harder to get complete burn and put out more hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.

That may be the case where you live, but here, all the shell Stations 91 octane gas contains no ethanol! I had to put several tanks of a lesser brand of gas through my bike and my devil slipons started to get a carbon build up as well, bike didn't idle as nice and seemed to bog a little down low.

I wish we had better fuel than 91 When i lived out East, used to get 93, seemed like my Truck always enjoyed the 93 the best, granted with its mod's its not supposed to have anything less than 92, i need to re-tune it now in CA.

The highest octane rating doesnt necessarily mean that its the best fuel. Often ethanol is added to boost the octane levels (maybe thats why 94 vpower had 5% ethanol & 91 vpower(canada) has no ethanol.) Ive ran Ultra 94 through my bike and it runs like $h!t compared to the Vpower 91 octane fuel.

Oh i know, regarding the Ethanol, it wouldn't run well in our bikes, unless you tuned for it, i just meant for my truck, there have been a few threads on here regarding Octane VS Quality VS Ingredients, my truck is a Mopar, and likes the taste of Ethanol i think

You could always put a bit of tolulene into the tank and see if it helps.
