2009 Yamaha R1 vs 2009 Buell 1125R

Hello guys, I was arguing with my friend about both bikes earlier today. I would like to hear your opinions on both bikes. I have a 2009 Yamaha R1 and love it. He don't understand the crossplane. How do I explain it to him?

I have owned both an '09 1125CR and an '09 R1. The R1 obviously has a lot more straight line speed and is fantastic overall, but the 1125CR was a much better handling bike, no question. Much easier to ride, quicker steering, excellent brakes (although my R1 brakes are much better than OEM with the simple addition of Ferodo pads), very user friendly. I've got Q2s on my R1 and a 3mm shock shim to speed up the handling, but it will just never be as easy to ride as an 1125 down a twisty back road. If you think I am crazy, look back at the 2009 AMA Daytona Sportbike races where Eslick on his 1125 routinely competed against and beat R6s, GSXR600s, ZX6Rs and it was NOT because he had more top end hp. The 1125 can corner with the best of them.

In my mind, the Buell and the Yamaha are two different flavors of the same sportbike ice cream. Both great fun in their own ways.

the 1125r is a bad ass bike for its intended purpose. really fun to ride up in the hills. having said that it cant hold a candle to the R1. it races against 600s so maybe that puts it in perspective

If I remember correctly, the Buell definitely had a HP advantage - Eslick would routinely pull everyone down the straights, only to be overtaken on the brakes, and thru the tighter sections of the track.

1125R is a POS in my opinion.. looks ugly @ss fawk too.. So slow, it had to compete inthe 600 cc class and the win was pretty much meaningless. It would never stand a chance against the 1000cc inline 4's or Duc 1098.

psssh.. you must be kidding me.. having more HP/TQ helped the win. On the straight, it pretty much burned the 600's. a Gixxer 750 would've destroyed that 1125R. So weak for a 1125 CC bike. Makes me wonder why the Duc 1098 (since it's also a v-twin) wasn't allowed in that race or even the gixxer 750. The win was so meaningless.

A co worker owns a brand new one and he says at high speed, that thing is not steady and the front rotor has the tendency to warp under hard braking over times.

I think people would be very surprised by how fast and easy the 1125s are to ride in the corners. As for the 1125 winning because they were faster in a straight line, that isn't necessarily true. There were some races where they were quicker, but they did not lead the speed charts on the straights at most tracks (Attack Performance ZX6Rs were always up there).

And if you think that Buell's can't corner or stop, go find the clip of Eslick stuffing it up the inside of Hacking's ZX6R at Mid-Ohio. Brilliant riding by him made possible by an excellent bike.

To each his own. Buells are not perfect and they are not for everybody (which is kind of what makes them cool). I'm sorry your friend isn't happy with his - they do need some setting up to achieve their potential.
