Yamaha jumping into the 250 ring?

With advent of the Kawasaki Ninja 300 this year, and the Honda CBR250R last year, as well as the news of the KTM 390 Duke for next year, the small-displacement sport bike segment in North America is starting to gain traction with the OEMs. With bikes like the Kawasaki Ninja 250R topping the single-model sales charts in the United States, it is not as if quarter-liter bikes, and their progeny, have struggled in North America, but the small-displacement learners have been handicapped from being marketed as such: small-displacement bikes suitable only for new riders.

With motorcycle OEMs bringing a new level of sophistication to the small-displacement realm, a sort of quarter-liter renaissance may well be upon us, and it could very well become “cool” to ride a motorcycle with less than 600cc in the sport-biking community. This sentiment certainly seems to be the case with the KTM 125 Duke, which debuted in 2010, and has been winning hearts ever since.

Even Suzuki seems to be getting in on the action, with news that the Suzuki GW250 will be coming to Canada next year (and the United States as well?). Reading more like a stop-gap measure until the Japanese brand can offer a more compelling 250cc offering to go against the Honda, Kawasaki, and now Yamaha, Suzuki doesn’t quite seem to understand what all the fuss is about, but is at least getting with the program.

Will we see the same from the other European brands? Or will the misconceptions regarding “brand dilution” prevent the marketing hacks from seeing the potential in this space? Time will tell on this one as well.

Eh, I don't think so. Suzuki and Kawi make 1300 and 1400s but I still prefer my R1

different types of bikes though, the 250 will be made to compete with the other "small cc" bikes, the honda's 250 and kawi's now 300.

ktm is coming out with a 390 as well
I'd still give the "R4" a try though...granted the Kawi is probably better because they have been at it a lot longer than the other brands.

250cc is the cutoff for certain countries licensing requirements. The Kawi panders to the non asian markets.

for me it would all be determined by gas mileage honestly. the only reason i'd get one is to use as a commuter. i could care less about the brand, as long as it can still get up and go in a reasonable time frame and gets the best gas mileage. if i was looking for something for smaller cc fun, the 300 would get my vote for sure.

I'm pretty sure that I'm done with riding on the street for a while. If/when I am able to get one it's only going to be for the track. I'd like to give it a try just to see how Yamaha has done with it.

No kidding. I like the artist rendition of what they think it would look like. I've never seen any 250-300cc bike with dual front calipers. Picture just looks like an R6 with a name change.

From what we've seen and heard, A&R magazine does quite a bit of Fotoshop.

fwiw, Yami has the R125 in Europe, so the platform is already there.....and there's been rumors for years of a 250-400cc version Stateside, but still waiting of course. Perhap Honda and the CBR250 and now Kawi and the Ninjer 300 will force a move...

since fuel is not that expensive in the US yet, who would want a 250 when you can have a liter bike?

Beginners.

Good idea but I think they're coming in too late. With Kawi having one for a stupid long time and now Honda having one, whoever comes out will be a bit late. Most people buy 250's as starter bikes, not meant to be kept for a long time like people do with 600's or liter bikes. So I think flooding the market with new 250's will not go over as well as the big guys think.
