Take a look through bike of the month. You will see that quite a few people have put way more than 2k into their bikes.

If you're planning on keeping your bike for quite a long period of time: Maybe.
If you can afford to effectively "throw away" that money: Yes.
If you're ever expecting to get that money back: NO.

Really, as has been said it's up to you, it's your bike and your money.

I look at some of the builds on here and wonder what the guys do when they're not selling drugs, the amount of money they've put into parts and such, lol.

Not if you are expecting resale value to increase.
Yes if you are a biking lunatic passionate enough about riding and enjoy modifying/improving them.

Just like any hobby... you gotta spend a little money to enjoy it and the more you spend the more you enjoy it.

If you are looking for a return on investment: Nope
If your return is the feeling of moving your soul and doing anything that contributes to that thrill: Heck yeah, to each his own!

We're the wrong people to ask - but yes! It's so rewarding to make a bike your own and in our case, we really just love transforming a bike from something a bit commonplace to something extraordinary and one of a kind. That's half of the fun!

Exactly. Putting money into your bike is just personalizing your bike to your own wishes. Why wouldn't you want to customize your bike/car/whatever? Unless you're a sheep...

Trust unto God and He shall direct your path.

If you really love your bike you'll spend what ever your wallet can afford without being irresponsible.

I literally just got done rebuilding my 2004 R1. I am still butt hurting right now for how much I put into it. I am questioning the amount of money I put into it now, but I'm sure after a year or two of riding it I will get the value out of it. I can't sell it now just because I have so much of my own sweat put into it. I had to do the following:

New Pistons & Rings ($580)
Cylinder Block ($100)
4 New Intake Valves ($112)
Head Gasket ($60)
Another Head Gasket (got bent in the mail and done for good) $60
New Valve Seals ($48)
Rebuilt Cylinder Head ($189)
New Radiator ($80)
New Fairing Kit ($375)
Tools (~$600)

Total: $2,204

So yeah I'm a bit butt hurting right now. I would say if you can find a nice gently used engine off Ebay then it will probably save a lot of headache. FYI it took me almost 3 months to get my R1 back up and running.
