Texas Roundup: Texas handgun bill author says school signs get it wrong; errant school districts scurry to file safety plans

Although school districts across Texas have posted signs warning that concealed weapons are prohibited from school property, the state official who wrote the state’s concealed-handgun law said Wednesday those signs are bunk.

“They need to read the law,” Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson said. “I can have my gun on campus, except in a building, regardless of what that sign says. Signs do not make law. School boards don’t make law.”

“The signs don’t stop a person from campus shootings,” the former state senator said. “Arguably they give the deranged shooter confidence because he thinks the campus is a gun-free zone.”

Patterson said when he picks up his third-grade twins from school, he wheels onto school property “with firearms in my possession. The signs are wrong.”

State law validates Patterson’s assertions.

With 223/5.56 ammo being bought all up, what used to be .30 cent per rd for cheap plinking, now .45 cent +, what is the max you willing to pay for at this time being?

reload. It's the best way match ammo for cheap ammo prices.

reloading supplies will always be out there. It may cost 1k in materials to get a good start, but when your ammo is under half cost you'll pay it off DAMN fast. I paid off my reloading supplies the first 4-6 months I owned it.

I never pay for handgun brass either as I always accidentally pick up more then i shot at the firing range LOL.

meister: is the +p brass diff then the normal brass? Just started reloading 45 and was gonna research that.

I am using the hornady xtp 200gr. with hp-38. haven't even tested it, but did 1.22 COAL with 5.6gr to start.

Thats what I do. It helps that im out at the range several times a month. All the brass is dumped into a 55 gallon plastic drum. All of it is high quality. .223, .45ACP, .45 GAP, .40SW, .9mm and some .357 SIG. These are all once fired speer, winchester or federal. The snipers running .308s try and hold as much spent brass too.

I use the +p brass to make my defense loads. You can push the upper limit of the pressure without too much worry, just be sure to work up to it. The +p brass has a thicker base and less internal cavity so it will push the pressure up on a standard load. The load must be tested in the same firearm you intent to use it in when you look for pressure signs. I load for the glock in +p but not the HK, the HK barrel will not take as much pressure and it's supported chamber allows the brass to last longer anyway.

I've never used that powder. Not sure how it reacts at high pressure.

+p is loaded hotter, about %10, +p+ is about %17 hotter. Make sure your weapon is rated for it. It will wear out a gun quick.

Yah, i know it's hotter. Just didn't think the brass was diff? So you still load the same COAL, etc. I'ts just the powder that is hotter and the brass can handle a bit more?

I was wondering how the hell the brass could be diff and still chamber. So you can use +p brass for normal loads then just fine.

The internal capacity is a little less, not much. Exterior dimensions are the same. Some brass will say +p and not be any different from the non +p. The powder will have less case capacity to build pressure in, so it's a little higher pressure and faster bullet.

Federal and speer I know have less internal capacity. I tested them years ago.
