New Member From Philly!

Hello all. I figure I'd simply say something to announce myself to the forum. Anywho, I've been an avid R1 fan since I can remember (~1998ish), and been in love with motorcycles well before that.

I currently do not own a motorcycle, but am in the process of purchasing a new one. I used to have a 2007 R6, but had to sell it two years ago to pay for school. I'm about to finally get my ME degree, and my graduation present to myself is a new bike. The only thing is, I'm stuck being indecisive. I really want to get my favorite bike which is a 2008 R1. However, as a student I don't have 6, 7, or 8 grand to spend on a bike which leads me to the alternative (financing a brand new bike). If my plans than I'm working on doesn't fall through, I'll have to settle for a 2012/2013 R6.

I guess time will tell, and we'll see what transpires. I really do want an '08 R1, though.

I'm really leaning towards the R1, but it's up to my credit union to approve it. I have a loan with a low interest rate to buy a "brand new" bike. This leaves me in 2012/2013 R6 territory. I want, no need a mint condition, virgin, low mileage R1. I found one, so it's up to the credit union. Pray for me.

I noticed already from browsing this site that I would like to put either a Graves or GYTR exhaust on it. That's a start.

i'd wait until you start your career to purchase a bike instead of piling up debt.

I though about that, but seeing as how I have everyday life bills/situations, it'd take me about a year and a half to two years to save 8 grand. With payments at $225 and full coverage insurance only $80 a month, I can swing that even with a mediocre job. I'm not one of those fortunate youngsters who family members helped them in college, and shortly there after. I'll swing the $300/month for now. I'm not buying a new car as mine is paid for, and it runs good. I've planned this out. Even if I have to struggle a lil', my bike's coming home in Jan/Feb. Be riding again soon.

Not forgetting to mention interest rates are being offered in the ball park of 4.99% for the life of the loan.

Use those student loans to pay for your bike.

Not a chance. Those student loans help pay rent, car insurance, food, gas, toiletries, other bills, and necessities. Good idea though, but I don't live with mommy and daddy, or have mommy and daddy send me money when I party, smoke, and drink all of my college money up. I'm an adult with responsibilities. It's a good idea though, nevertheless.

Thanks. I appreciate that. I'm going to pray on it, and leave it in the Lord's hands.

You aren't the only one seeing it Chris.

OP its cheaper in the long run to save money for the 08. Once you get the bike its not like you will have the couple of thousand laying around to throw into the bike for the exhaust and other things, and trust us it will be a couple of thousand. But to each is own. If the 08 is really what you want you should get your dream bike not something different.

You make it sound so terrible. Many of us prefer any model other than 09 and up, the OP being one of them. To each there own.

You shouldn't be so quick to assume, granted I provided you with very little input about my situation. For a college student handling his responsibilities and able to get a loan round 4.0%, I must be doing something right. I've done the math, checked the amortization, and know how much I'll be paying back in interest plus what the bike will be worth in four years. I'm far from a dummy, and over time you'll see.

Thanks for the advice and support. I'm okay with the bike being stock as the good things in life sometimes takes time; well, at least for a someone like me. OR, just maybe, I have contingencies in place for the things you speak of. Again, time will tell.

I live in University City. Temple isn't bad, but I had to go there to fit certain constraints. I had other opportunities, but life situations intervened, so...

I've considered it. Still do on occasion, but see posts below.

This is true, and while the CP is the newest thing, if memory serves me correct (I could be slightly off), the '08 R1 came with the highest HP and TQ numbers right from the factory in comparison to all other R1 models.

No offense, but I highly doubt you're getting 4% unless mom or pops is consigning, and I they are, they'd making a bigger mistake than you for getting a loan instead of waiting to pay with cash

Welcome to the site! If you finance a new bike you maybe required to carry full insurance. Not sure how old you are but i'm assuming early 20s? When I was 21 full insurance on an R1 - the cheapest I could find was $250 a month. (And that was 10 years ago) Might be a decision changer for you to consider.
