I installed the new Ohlins SD 043 damper but there is an error on the dash. When I plug the stock damper back in the error goes away. I did some research and the non-electronic damper, SD 047, comes with a resistor to eliminate this error.
Has anyone else installed this damper?
If so, what is the black plastic tube included in the kit used for?
I installed the SD 043 onto my R1M and had no error. You sure you have all the wires that attach to the SD plugged into the correct connectors on the bike? There were additional connectors verses the stock SD
don't want to thread jack but since you brought up this damper why does it only work on the M when there is an electronic damper on the standard bike as well? it doesn't make any sense why it can't.
Sd043 will only work with the M as only the M has the SCU (the ohlins suspension control unit) that controls the sd043 as well. The regular r1 damper is only based on a simple velocity algorithm.
You remove the stock damper plug. The black tubing is shrink tube that you use on the old connector under the upper fairing to seal it. The ohlins connects to another connector that is capped. just remove the cap and connect the sd043 to it. thats it!! the r1m has this ohlins connector and the stock bike does not.
the connectors are not even close to being the same so it will be easy to see what i am talking about when you see all the connectors....
According to Ohlins, the oem damper switch should be removed from the damper and left plugged in on the bike. Their directions suck in my opinon. I have ordered the resistor that comes with the other damper as I think this is a cleaner install. Not sure why they handle the oem damper two different ways depending on the type installed. The solution should be consistent.
I'm a bit confused. I have an R1M which means that I can buy either the SD043 (mechatronics) or the SD047 (mechanical) one.
I understand that SD047 is completely manual, i.e. I can adjust it as I want, and it stays at that damping level regardless of actual road speed.
How does the SD043 work, because it also says that it has 16 clicks? I assume that it adjusts with the road speed. Say I install it and I feel that I need more damping; can I put in more damping (use less clicks) as a starting point, and assume that the bike will adjust the damping further based on road speed? Does it mean that the "base" setting will be automatically adjusted by the damper ?
The damping setting is variable on SD 043 and adjusts according to the same algorithm set for the Ohlins suspension.
I don't know if that changes for the different settings, i.e. A-1 vs A-2, etc. @2muchbluE, why you don't get an error and I do confuses me. Maybe there is something wrong with your bike. The error code should show up if the oem steering damper is removed. The resistor will eliminate this error.

I shouldn't get one because there are two oem damper connectors on the r1m. The oem damper is connected to one of them. with the install of the sd043 you now connect it to the other oem connection that is specifically for the sd043. The ecu should recognize the sd043 is now connected and not have a code. If you flashed your ecu maybe you should consider that as a reason you are seeing a code.
i hust installed electronic damper on my R1M last week.Truly amazing, suddenly change the attitude of the bike in positive way.I was adopted to use Scotts top damper in my orevious bikes, like that too, easy to adjust etc but now, this thing is perfect.in the city,it is smooth, when you start to accelerate or hard cornering,it adopts to your style,i am really happy with...for the problems some have,i did not have any while installing...and did not get any code after install.i will flash the bike, just dont know to make steering damper "false" or "true"...
Was just curious if anyone else has had any more feedback or experience with the SD043? I'm debating between it and the standard 047. I like the theory behind electronic but if the 43 isn't a huge difference over stick I'll stick with the manual.
I have the 43 on mine. I ride both street and track. I have zero issues with it. I know many prefer the fine adjustability for the perfect spot. So to each his own.
I run in advanced groups and steering head stability has never been an issue. You will enjoy it but if you want that sweet spot all the time when you ride I suggest the sd047
