So I figured I start a new thread about the mess my bike is now since after I had the recall work done. Figure this can be a place everyone can post all the issues they are having with dealers destroying their expensive property!!
Here is a update from the morning alone.
Well a update on my issue since the recall. I was riding to work today and was being annoyed by the smell of oil burning and the fact the whole bike smells like it's 10 years old with the gears clanking every time I shift 3rd howling weather I am accelerating or slowing down with awesome smoke out the pipe with the tip of the muffler being covered in ejected oil and black (I still have the cat). I stopped for a little break and as I am standing there drinking a coffee looking at it I notice something on the inside of the bike (kickstand side) that I never noticed before!! Look at pictures. Well I got furious and now know why the back would randomly get squirmy for no reason which I thought was from a warn tire, but instead it has been catching oil dripping off the front of the engine and oil cooler which is literally destroyed!!! I had ZERO miles on my bike when I put the COX guards on and until the day that I had taken my bike it they looked brand new! Not a single bent or damaged fin!! You can see in one of the pictures of the oil cooler covered in oil on the side and how clogged all the fins are with oil and gunk!! I called Yamaha again because the dealer is closed and I want them to start a case for the dealer destroying my bike!!! The rep at Yamaha I spoke to gave me his info and logged everything that I am having issues with and told me when I take the bike tomorrow to the dealer to call him on his direct line and he will speak to them. Also when I had dropped the bike off I asked the shop manager if they will ride my bike and he said NO, NEVER no need to! Yea well I got it back with 5 miles on it. Which I am sure were not cruising miles!! That irritates me the most I have to say!! I did tell him that all the issues my bike has now and that I will refuse for them to open up the engine!! I did not pay all the money I did for a NEW expensive bike to have a bunch of guys that obviously don't know what they are doing take it apart and destroy it more so then they already have.
I also noticed that the steering damper bolt has been stripped/rounded which once again makes me say why in the world did they touch that!?! Most every nut and bolt looks like this now which personally pi$$es me off!!!
Damn thats shitty man. its a shame this whole deal took place and this is exactly why. not every dealership should be allowed to own a wrench let alone a service department.
Oh man, that sucks. I'd have a hard time not flipping out and doing something stupid. Good luck I hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction. I have faith that Yamaha will do the right thing. Keep us posted.
That absolutely sucks man I'm sorry to hear about your bike. Mine hasn't gone in for the recall yet. I'm scared as hell. You should post what dealership it was in hopes of saving someone else's pride and joy from the disastrous molestation. Yamaha better make it right man...
I won't put the dealers name out there just yet. They might resolve this to my satisfaction, but if not I will defiantly put it out there, but if you are from socal you have probably been there is all I will say and no they are not the first place you thought of lol I took it to them because I didn't think I would not have a problem here, but obviously I was wrong!! I will definitely keep everyone posted and like I said they will not open my bike up again and they will fix this!! I hate that it has gotten to this because I love my bike!!
once again I don't want to to put the name out there just yet because no matter how mad I get mistakes happen and now I will see how they handle it or else I will put there name out there. I have seen on the forum a lot of socal guys have purchased there bikes from them
Unfortunately its past the point of mistakes, you can understand if one thing got improperly installed but this shows no care and a lack of common sense to treat someones pride with respect. It wouldn't surprise me if apprentices did the work. :nforc:
For the love of god, if you live in SoCal, PM the OP and ask the dealer name, so you can avoid this mess... I bet Yamaha corporate will be all over these clowns.
Like iamzombie said if you live in socal and haven't taken your bike in yet or already have and want to know the dealer I went to IM me and I will tell you where I went to avoid.
You said that you won't allow them to open up your bike again, but you're waiting to see if they make it right, which is why you're withholding the name? Makes no sense! You don't trust them to open your bike again even if they do make it right, but you'll let others go through the same thing?
You sure the oil cooler is leaking or just a lot of residual oil from performing the recall? My oil cooler on my bike is an oily mess and so is the oil pan, case covers etc. I haven't ridden my bike but all that oil doesn't go anywhere it just streams out from the oily parts and collects debris and grime. My engine is getting a Dawn Dish soap bath before it gets ridden to remove all the oil. Might help.
I will try and record my bike and the misfiring that happens when idling and revving it up to 5k. Wish I had a camera to film what its doing when I am riding it. Would break all of your hearts to hear such a beautiful engine cry
I know what you mean!! I was dreading taking it in, but you have to. Not to be a bearer of bad news, but I looked up all the dealers within 30 miles of me and picked these guys because they have high end clients so I figured they will do it right. Boy was I wrong :crash lol.. Best of luck when you finally do it and when you get it home just go through the whole thing and make sure nothing is leaking and bolts aren't destroyed that shouldn't of be. I did take a lot of before pictures which Yamaha told me was a great thought on my part. They too have no idea why they touched the steering damper among other parts that had nothing to do with the recall and why they rode it for 5.5 miles when they weren't supposed to. Good luck and just take a ton of pictures of the bike before the fact and use them to check the bike out yourself and see whats out of place or if anything is. Hopefully you don't have to go through this though!!!
That is fvcked up mate. Like has been said, that is beyond a mistake or not taking due care, that's negligence or incompetence.
You should have a new bike of that dealers showroom floor for nothing and they should foot the bill. Yamaha have come up with a recall plan and supplied that dealer with the parts and instructions any competent mechanic could follow to conduct the repair without damaging your bike and leaving it with oil coming out the exhaust. Yamaha shouldn't foot the bill for that workshops negligence.
I understand why you don't want to name the shop yet but I say regardless of the end result you should name and shame them. Good luck, hope you get a swift result and a new bike.
What is the possibly that the way its running,it could be slowly destroying the engine to some degree?.Are they going to look at that or merely look over the recalled section?.
I personally would be pushing for a brand new motorcycle.
Extra thankful mine came out purring just as nice as when she went in.
I looked all over to make sure everything was tight and in order. Not a single blemish even the damn bolts looked brand spanking new (well they were lol) but still not a single scratch on any bolthead. no leaks no odd sounds or smells.
Honestly if I didn't see it myself I would have seriously wondered if anything at all was done...
Then I read a story like this and inherently understand the value of knowing the tech that's dealing with your bike. Sorry man.
hope they fix it.
TBH I wouldn't trust them anymore either there's nothing their service department could offer me. I would accept a 2016 (factory recall) bike. since yours was very new.
I see so many horror stories about this recall. My suggestion to all would be to investigate the details of your state's lemon law. For example, the basic lemon law in NY:
Covers passenger vehicles purchased, leased, transferred or registered in New York, including motorcycles and excluding off-road vehicles.
Repair Attempts/Days Out of Service: 4 repair attempts, 30 calendar days out of service, or for a substantial defect within 20 days of receipt of notice given by the consumer using certified mail.
Coverage Period: 2 years or 18,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
If I had a new R1 that came back with any problems, internal (such as smoking or noises it didn't make before) or external, I would keep taking it back until it's as good as new. Keep track of all the downtime. If they can't get it right after enough attempts, go after Yamaha for a new bike.
oh believe me I have. the place that's doing mine has 1 more week and it's been 30 days at the shop.
to be honest, I kind of want rid of it. I'd take my R6 back in a heartbeat at this point. I will be going over it with a fine tooth comb before it gets loaded in my truck. I am going to have them put it on their dyno too.
Yamaha has a friggin sh*t show on its hands....oh i mean the owners of these bikes have on thier hands.... Yamaha seems to want you to believe that because they are supplying these tranny kits that hey what could go wrong....the dealer sells our bikes so they must be able to perform this repair.....WRONG. The reality is the fact that all dealers and the mechanics for that matter ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL. Just wait till spring when the rest of the east coast gets ridding the horrorshows will continue.
I wanted a '15 R1, but after my problems with my '07 barely out of warranty, I've sworn off first year models. I hope you get a resolution you can live with.
Well here is the follow up to this on going problem. I took the day off of work yesterday to take my bike in. I got to the dealership early in the AM because I was not going to leave my bike there!! After arguing with them about that they took it in 2 hours later. They had no answer as to why it was leaking oil everywhere and stripped bolts they shouldn't of touched!!. They took the fairings off and kept pushing the bike in and out of the back to wash the engine off. Well after three hours of that the shop manager Rob took it for a 15 minutes ride. When he came back he was telling me that it ran fine!! I asked him what was the reason why it won't start, back firing randomly, oil out of the exhaust and oil coming out the engine in every location and the discoloration of the head where the header lines up which happened after I had already put 6k miles on it and 100 miles later it has a hot spot since I got the bike back from recall. He seriously just started to tell me that all my problems apparently are from me putting gas in the bike not on its kickstand!!! ARE YOU FU%K*NG KIDDING ME!!
He would not answer any of my question and was saying they apologize for the oil everywhere and that is because they forgot to wash it before they gave it back to me and it was in the fairings and dripping on the exhaust because when they changed the filter if got in the fairings!! This impossible I told him because they bike has no fairings on it when you change out the filter and how is it possible to have oil everywhere and still burning up on exhaust while I ride it from the filter!!! He had no answer for anything!! I told him the bike has no power anymore and he told me that he rode it and it was fine. I asked him then if he owns a 2015 R1. He said no. So I then ask what the f&*k is he comparing the bike to and how does he have any idea how a 2015 R1 ride and the sounds it makes? He did said he has ridden all the recalls for 4 miles which apparently makes him a expert of the characteristics of 2015 R1 and I who purchased the bike in July and has over 6k miles on it and had a 2012 R1 before this bike with 30+k miles on it did not know how a Crossplane R1 acts when riding and the sounds it makes mechanically!!
When they were giving me the paper work to sign for the work they didn't do I said no because I was calling Yamaha before I sign anything. I walked away in the parking lot on the phone. The shop manager Rob came up to me gave me my key and walked away while I was on the phone!!! Yamaha called him and spoke to him. They told me that they couldn't speak to him because he was in a meeting. I told the Yamaha rep no he is not because I am looking at him standing at the door way to the service entrance. She was not happy when I told her that so she called back. While this was happening a guy came over to me to talk to me that was helping me the first time I brought my bike in and asked me whats wrong. I told him and showed him the pictures and as we were talking and he expressed he would be furious if he got this bike back like that. They yelled for him to come back inside as we were talking and after he went back in and I don't know what they told him he was avoiding me after and when I would walk to him he would run off to a area I can't enter.
Well after the Yamaha rep spoke to him he came back and once again was not answering anything about what was wrong with the bike, but telling me they cleaned it up it ran like a dream and that once again I fuel my bike improperly!!! Can anyone guess how I felt in this moment??? I said what about the oil out of the exhaust. He said they cleaned the can, he test rode it and nothing is there!!! I couldn't believe the stupidity I was dealing with!!!
At this point I was furious with a massive head ache from what I would guess was my blood pressure going through the roof!!! I get on my bike to leave. Funny enough the service station faces the freeway on ramp that I was getting on and as I was accelerating it backfires VERY loud again which he said was in my imagination because he couldn't get it to do that!!
Today I called Yamaha again and they have given me direction on what to do now.
Anyone in the LA, OC area stay away from Del Amo Motorsports in Redondo Beach!! I can't believe how they treated and spoke to someone who purchased a $20,000 bike that they performed a factory recall service on and now they have destroyed and will not take responsibility for!!!
You didn't have tell me this would happen; I see it everyday working for an auto manufacturer. Any repair this invasive would be rife with complaints........
I have photos of the bike before and after with all the damage that the bike has. They also told me to take it another dealer which I picked and they are small time and from what I am getting are up to putting a big dealer down! I have a lawyer that has been on this since day one who has been documenting everything that is going on.
This really sucks! Thanks for the heads up, that is where I bought my bike and I did get an unreal OTD price. I did walk around the back of the shop where they keep all of the bikes pretty much stacked up waiting on service and the shop seemed really unorganized and dirty/cluttered to me. I will be avoiding this place at all cost. I wish I could just get the parts from Yamaha, I would take my bike to Graves and pay out of pocket for them to do the swap for me! Good Luck and keep us updated.
No problem man I am glad I could help someone else to prevent this from happening!! I didn't even think about asking the Yamaha Rep about Graves. They are 10 minutes from my house! I will give them a call tomorrow and ask about that. With the issues I am having I wouldn't be surprised if they are ok with me doing that!
I wish I could of taken my bike to the shop I go to. They aren't Yamaha certified, but they are Aprilia and Ducati certified. I forgot to mention that after I left Del Amo yesterday I went by my shop and my mechanic just looked at it for 30 sec and told me that the work was complete hack job and about the mess they made. He also told me that when they use the silicon between the seems of the timing cover and such that if they put to much or to little it can and will damage the engine and leak oil like it has been!! He wished me luck and told me he wishes he could of done this for me because it is a shame this has happened to a amazing bike!! I would of been willing to pay my shop to do it if Yamaha would of given me the part! Funny enough when I dropped my bike off at Del Amo the first time they asked where I get my service done. I told them the shop I go to and one of their employees knew the owner and mechanics at my shop and just said before anything was done that I probably had wished that I could of had my guys do this recall!! Now that I think about it I should of seen the red flag when he made that comment!!!
My bet is that Yamaha will replace the bike. I don't see how this can end any other way.
I say that because this situation is very similar to another high profile sport bike manufacturer that I had to deal with as a result of dealer tech building and repair issues. They destroyed that brand new engine.
As a result,
My heart goes out to ya. Sorry to hear.
On another note,
I pickup my M from recall tomorrow. ... fingers crossed
