Hello. I just joined this forum and this is my first post. I live in Queensland Australia and tommorrow i am going to look over a 2015 R1 that is for sale. The bike has many added extra's such as arrow slip on and y pipe, bmc airfilter, power commander 5, rear sets, short levers, smoked screen, comfort seat, engine covers and the list goes on (about 4g in add ons). It's the gloss black bike with 3500k's on the clock without a scratch. To me it's the bike i want. I owned a 2010 r1 that i put 15000k's on with many track days. I've been wanting the current generation for while and now the funds are available all be it a tight budget.
There is a 2016 matt black bike also available from another private seller with a similar list of add on's all be it akropovic can and y pipe, this bike is advertised for 2 grand more. Should i be considering the 2016 over the 2015 due to the recall on the 2015? In saying that at the moment deals are around on new 2016 stock sitting in dealerships? $22k stock dealer demo, 21k for the above mentioned used 2016, 19k for the 2015? I think i'll be happy with the 2015 but i just thought i'd get some opinions from the forum. Hopefully my next post will be the show off. thanks graham
I'd go for the 2016, personally, because it would make me subjectively feel better that the bike has never been built then taken apart. That being said my buddy has a 2015 with over 11,000 miles on it and several track days. Has has experienced zero issues with the bike post recall. So really the question is this; is the piece of mind worth it to you to have newer year model? Also you don't need nor want a power commander on these bikes. You want your ecu flashed, and active tune. So even more of a reason to skip the 2015. Also I'll add I don't like black bikes on the street. It's hard enough for cars to see us, why make it harder by driving a black bike.
The 2015 comes with the reality of a massive transmission failure that resulted in an entire release recall, so every 2015 was recalled to be torn apart, have components replaced and then put back together. So right there you're dealing with a bike that is flawed from the onset, then comes the inconsistency from the work being performed, not knowing how well of a job was done, if all the torque specifications were met or if the mechanic just winged it by hand etc, there's variables whereas from factory all specs were met.
On top of this no one wants to outright buy a 2015 because they are aware of the above, so right there this stigma will greatly affect resale value or want as it has poor propositional appeal to people in the know. I passed up on a new 2015 Raven R1 for my 2016 R1S which had the same price, sure the R1 has all of the things we all know it has over the R1S, but for me the cost was too high thinking of the interim and long term, not to mention the first thing as an owner I would have to have done is my bike being ripped apart.
If you can get a 2016 over a 2015, do it, absolutely do it.
Thanks for your thoughts gents. I wasn't aware of any engine updates on the 2016 other then the gearbox fix. Seems both bikes for sale are fitted with power commander 5 (no good you say). The 2016 bike is the matt black grey colour so just as invisable as the gloss black. The 2015 is only an hours drive from my home and the 2016 is around 10 hours away. I was still keen on the 2015 to save some money but i think the information gathered here is swaying me to spend the extra and travel further for the better bike.
I was in the same boat a couple months ago trying to decide between 2015 and 16. Great deals to be had (still) on the 2015. But based on the feedback from amazing folks on this forum I opted not to get the 2015. I REALLY wanted to get the Red and white one it's speeding just standing still ,but. Don't want Anyone opening my tranny if I can help it.
Listen to Nya. R1s it be a good choice ?
Well i went and looked the 2015 bike today. beautifull bike with all fantastic mods including locomoto mk2 belly pan. the owner had the recall done at 600k's it now has 3400k's no issues. I feel for the owner and any other 2015 owner who bought in good faith the latest and greatest from Yamaha only to be left with a bike that has the blemish of a recall that has hurt it's resale. (i'd still be interested in the 2015 if it dropped another grand or 2).
I've taken on the advice gathered here on this forum and i'm now seeking a good second hand 2016. There a few around, the 2016 i mentioned prior is a great deal with all the goodies but the bike is along way from where i live. A dealer near my home has a used low k anniversary model in standard trim at a price a fith of the retail. For me i'd be happy with a 2016 with slip on, cat remover, air filter and re flash. rear sets, levers and engine covers are not a priority. i own 12 bikes and i ride the old classics on the road to save my licence. This R1 will spend most of it's time at the track. I have been researching updates of crank, cylinder head and pistons on the 2016 but can't find anything listed on the net. I'll be talking to my local yamaha parts guy in a few days to see if he can shed any light. thanks for your advice and thoughts gents.
The anniversary model is beautiful. If I'm not mistaken they came with the Akra slip on outside the US. If I were to buy another R1, it would be the 60th. I know this is an R1 board, but have you considered the 16+ zx10?
Hello again. seeking some more opinions on used some used 2016 60th anniversary bikes i have a choice on. bike 1 is bone stock 5000k's $20k. bike 2 acropovic slip on with some cosmetic/ protection extra's, it has travelled 12000k's $18k. so to me bike 2 is 3k cheaper because it allready has the pipe. thats allot of track days paid for with the difference. is 7 thousand less k's worth the 3k? It's coming down to the line on which R1 i'll be parking in the garage soon.
I always preferred a clean slate. So for that reason I would go for the stock and make the bike my own. Picking out each and every mod is so satisfying and you can truly make the bike your own. Now Akra pipe is nice, but I would've prefer to install it myself. Give me some quality time with the bike.
The second option have more than twice as many miles on the bike so it's value is not the same as the first. I would go for the less miles. Always.
Again just my opinion at the end of the it's your money and what ever makes you happy that trumps any logic.
Congrats. Bike looks great and that Akra pipe looks sic. Glad you followed your heart [emoji12] it was not about 3k was it
I personally would take the grey over yellow any day.
?
In the end the decision came down to i wanted the best i could get. I rode the bike for the first time today and travelled 639klms to get it home. I went to motor cycle nivana on this bike today. The only negitive is that i did not buy one sooner.
Ok a bit of a show of. Photo of my silver and black yammi's including the R1. 1967 yr1 350
