Been scouring the internet and I can't find any real good information about the R1/M and the CCU + YTRAC apps. Most of the threads here seem to be more about hardware installation than how the software performs. I've got an opportunity to purchase the CCU system for my R1 and I'm curious as to how the app performs in trackday and racing situations.
For those of you who've used your CCU and YTRAC apps at trackdays or for racing I have some questions.
- How is the track database? Are most tracks in the US pre-loaded, or do you have to mark the start/finish line and 'record' the track before you can start logging lap times?
- How does the lap comparison tools compare to previous lap timers you've used?
- How difficult is it to export your data logs for integration with Gopro videos using tools like RaceRender (or similar)?
- How is the YTRAC app itself? Easy to use? What do you like about it? What don't you like about it?
Thanks very much for any feedback you can provide!
Currently I'm unaware of any software that allows importing of the files to create video overlays, and there isn't an option to export the files to another format.
I use AiM EVO4 datalogger, and has for some years.
AiM pc software is excellent, easy to use and you discover new ways to use it all the time.
The delta-time function is very usefull to spot corners/sections which can be improved.
It logs a lot of channels from the ECU (rpm, tps, temperature, etc), but it's missing the TC-channels, which is a shame.
Very good to know, where TC kicks in, so we can adjust to avoid it.
But it's quite hard to locate the CANBUS channels and bit/byte, where TC information is hiding.
Lately I got the opportunity to use a CCU, so we can try to locate the missing TC channels, by comparing AiM and CCU channels.
Together with AiM tech we have now located all TC channels, and these will be available in the next AiM update.
So I have used both CCU and AiM the last 2 reace weekends.
CCU is very easy to use, but it's a very different level of logging information and display format.
If you want a fast/easy tool to get an overview...CCU is great.
If you want to go deeper and get more advantages from the logging...AiM (or similar) is a better choice.
The wifi and tablet use is very painless to use....but if you're used to work with a high level of logging, it's /completely/ useless....
ps: it looks a bit silly now, with dual GPS antennas ;-)
I'm not racing, only lots of trackdays, so I don't think I'm needing a massive amount of data logging, just the basics. Something that is easy to use and doesn't require hours on hours to configure and get working. Sounds like the CU would work for that. However...
Frankly I was disappointed that the data can't be exported and there are no pre-programmed tracks as BlackFZR states. I was thinking of purchasing a couple GoPros soon and was hoping to get into video editing including overlaying the CCU data with the video. If the CCU can't do that I may just save my money.
Data can be exported...but it's propriority format....so you can send it to another CCU user to compare data.
I'll ask AiM if they have an idea...
Inserting new tracks is very easy, and can be done from home.
It's actually just a google map inside the app, where you point out the start/finish line with 2 pins.
I'll say it's a 2 minute job pr track.
If you /need/ exporting data to use as overlays to your video's...you might consider other units. AiM SoloDL (or other similar units) is easy to use and connect (2 wires) to the wireharness.....and collected data is GPS and full ECU data channels, that can easily be exported and used by Dashware or similar software. Result could be something like this

Oh that's cool! A very convenient feature. Some GPS lap timers make you walk out to the physical location of the track to mark the start-finish line. Which is tough because a some of tracks I go to are gated and they won't let you walk onto the track. Others start when you reach a pre-determined speed, and that is your start/finish line.

That's some awesome information, thanks! I'm not sure i *need* the data to be exported, just something I'm interested in doing. I could probably live without it, but if I'm going to sink that much money into a GPS system is sure would be nice to have.
If you're planning to go to NCBike with PRE next weekend swing by my pits, I'll show you everything and we can talk about it for a while. Overall it's pretty cool - but I do have some gripes and wish they'd update the app.
As for track setup with the CCU - you need to set it manually, but only need to do it one time for each track you might ride. Slight PITA (and one of the things I wish they'd address in an update) but nothing that can't be addressed with a few minutes setup.
I haven't attempted to export the data for import to Race Render but I recall someone mentioning you can do it; I just haven't done it yet. Was actually planning to check it out over the 'off season' and got distracted by other projects.
I'd recommend waiting the week or so before pulling the trigger and we can talk at NCBike. Or, if you're really itching to get it done send me a PM and we can setup some time to talk beforehand.

Thanks Mike! I'm not planning on attending next weekend at Ncbike. That's the same weekend as the VIR Motoamerica races and I don't want to miss the big boys coming to town. Will you be at the PRE VIR North day on the 23rd? Maybe we could walk through it then. I can probably... heheh... wait until then. Although I'm not a patient man once I get an idea in my head. lol
I've read this post several times over and it seems like it'll do plenty of stuff, just figuring out how to get the config setup and working properly seems to be giving people a lot of trouble.

Based on what rivmin says its something I can do at home. Which is an extremely nice feature IMO. Its nice to know that once its done I don't have to re-do it.
Back on topic. Still researching this. It looks like the iTunes store only has the Y-TRAC app, while the Google Play Store has the Y-TRAC, CCU Config, and YRC Setting app. Are the 3 apps integrated into 1 for the iOS version? Seems odd Yamaha wouldn't offer full functionality for iOS users. So assuming I need the 3-separate apps from Google Play it looks like I'll also need to buy a new tablet.
Having said that... I'm new to android tablets. The Google Play store says the apps support the Nexus 7 or 9. I'm wondering exactly what tablet model and Android OS version you guys are using that work well with the apps?
I use 1. gen Asus Transformer tablet (with detachable physical keyboard).
I think allmost every tablet will work, as long as it's running Android version +4.0.
Ah. I see. So the iOS app does everything the 3 Android apps do. Cool.
And thanks for the info on the Android OS's!
