HOW TO: 04-06 R1 Install Shock

Whats up everyone, I just installed my new rear shock and I remembered to take pics so I decided to make a how to. For a 04 - 06 R1

You need a rear stand
Car jack
Allen wrench
Closed end wrench 14mm
Large Socket wrench with extension 14mm
Small socket wrench with 10mm socket extension
You also need two other sockets but I forgot what size, one is bigger than 19mm and the other one is like a 11mm or 12mm.


So the first thing you do is get the rear wheel up in the air and take off the lower cowlings. I just took off my cowlings as one piece rather than messing with trying to separate them. They are held on by 4 allen head clips on each side plus one allen head bolt on each side. There are also two allen head clips in the front below the radiator opening.

The next thing you do is take the exup servo motor off. It's being held on by one 10mm bolt, I just took the fairing clip holder off to get to it.

After that you need to take these two bolts out (14mm). The one on the left is what the shock is attached to, and the one on the right attaches to the swing arm. Take the one on the right that is attached to the swing arm out first, this way the bracket will move forward making the bolt that attaches to the shock accessible. This is ware you need the car jack, the bolt should slide out easily. If they don't, jack up the bike at the point on the exhaust ware 2 become 1 until the bolt slide out. Being really careful not to jack it up to much or your bike will fall over. This spot has a flat spot and is just about a mounting point for the exhaust making it really sturdy, it did not damage my exhaust at all.

The next thing you do is take the top mounting nut for the shock off. It is located under the gas tank, this bolt is 19mm. This is when the big socket wrench comes in handy. Be carefull to brace the bike when you brake it loose so it doesn't tip over.

After that you need to separate the top mounting bracket from the shock itself. Because you took the top bolt off now you can turn the shock to get a better leverage angle. This pic is of the top of the shock with the bracket removed. After this step you can remove the rear shock from the bike.

Now you can start reassembling, from the top down. Start by reinstalling the top shock mount, don't tighten it down yet just get it on. Then install the bolt that holds the shock to the mount, You can tighten this one (32 foot/pounds). I recommend you grease this bolt.

The next thing is to install the two bolt on the bottom side. Install the bolt that attaches the shock first, then the bolt that attaches to the swing arm. One you get the bolts in it's easy to put the nuts on from the other side of the bike. The bolt that attaches to the swing arm is kind of tricky to get in, using the jack move the bike up and down until the holes line up. The bolt should slide right in. I recommend greasing these bolts as well. Once you have all the bolts in tighten everything down to 32 foot/pounds including the nut under the gas tank.

Then just put your gas tank back on, and your lower cowlings and BAM done in about an hour. Any questions just ask

Damn, I just replaced my shock without reading this. It wasn't too bad, but I think if I had read your instructions first, it would have cut down on my install time.

I just installed my rear shock, with this page it made it very easy. The only thing is that on the 07-08 it is different. All the bolt you need to take off are the one on the shock (top and bottom) the one on the triangle and the one on top where the bracket is at. Very easy, but you might need a second hand for the nut at both ends of the screw.

You just got to love it to understand.

Just another bump for anybody who happens to be doing this. Installed the new Ohlins today and this was a big help and with 2 people, made the process a breeze.

Another bump - this worked brilliantly TTX36 installed. The tip about jacking under the exhaust worked a treat.

Whilst you can do on your own - a second set of hands makes this an easy job.

Awesome post, thank you Parker!

I just installed an Ohlins shock to my 2005 R1 with this guide. The only difference to me was that I suspended the bike from the garage ceiling using ratchet straps so the strain was off the swinging arm (as I didn't have a car jack)...

One man job, took me 45 mins Cheers mate!
