Gearing

What gearing are the high 9 second bikes running? I am at a 10.1 now on the rev limiter going through the traps in 5th with my 15/45 gearing and a 190/55 tire. The tire was worn a bit, so I know a fresh 190/55 will help a little bit. I plan on getting a new chain and sprocket set soon anyways and was going to go 16/47, but now it's got me thinking I might need to go 16/46. Thoughts?

What's stock gearing? 16/45? 16/47 is going to be almost the same as 15/45, so don't run that. Why not gear up more in the back and keep the 15t in the front - that way you'll be shifting into 6th and not worrying about the rev limiter in 5th? 6th isn't an overdrive or something is it?

If you still have usable stock gears, just go back to stock and try that...but honestly I think you're gonna wanna gear up more, not gear back down.

Stock gearing is the same as an 04-06 R1...17/45. If I geared down any more, the bike would wheelie worse than it does now, and now it's borderline impossible to put down the track. I think crossing the line tapped out in 6th is a bit much for a literbike...I would like to be able to do over 150 MPH still...

Ah, ok yeah going to 16t makes sense then! I would try the -1/+1, will keep the wheelies down to a minimum, might be a happy trade off.

Anyone with an 04-06 R1 care to share their gearing combos?

-2 in front, plus 3 rear.. for 1/8 mile. 120 lb rider. it wont go in 1/4 with this. on 04 u need to gear it as much as possible with clutch. it will help a ton. i picked up .3 in 1/8 just dropping one in front front what i had been running. in 1/4 i run stock rear and -2 in front.. but im lightweight. heavier u are. more gearing u will need.

This is for 1/4 mile only, 200 pounds in gear. Keep in mind this is also the same bike I ride to work and is also stock height and wheelbase.

Yea, I'm already 15/45 (-2) in front and I'm just hitting the revlimiter right before going through the traps...

I ran -1 +4 last year in 1/4 and wasn't hitting rev in 5th. However, I'm not a small guy. I'm actually trying out a -2 +4 setup this year. If I were you I would stay with -1 in the front and if you have a couple sprockets for the rear take them with you so you can change them while at the track. It doesn't take long to change a rear sprocket. You should invest in a strap for the front. They are cheap and a must if you're running on a track that hooks up really good.

wow, 2 year old thread revived. with 17/47, you've changed the gearing by less than 5%.

Keep in mind for every 1 tooth change in front will equal 3 teeth in the rear. So going down 1 in front will be the same as just going up 3 in the rear. My bike was new when I changed the gearing so I went -1 on the front and +1 in the rear so I didn't have to mess with my chain at all. This is equal to keeping the front the same and going up+4 in the rear! This gearing is working good for me.

-2+3 here

+6" lowered 2", strapped, 240lb rider, spyder with .018 jets.

No issues with it coming up, and I'm JUST on the limiter at the traps. (151mph)

2nd gear 50mph @ 7k is absolutely PERFECT for roll racing on the kit.

oh and one last post-- I put at least 1,000 miles a month on my bike with the -2+3

No issues at all.. It's perfectly streetable. There's no need for a 170mph+ top end on these bikes.
