The roads out in the hill country (Bandera, Vanderpool, etc) are the best roads in the state. There's a set out there known as "the trinity" and they consist of routes 335, 336, and 337. 55 is another good one. My annual riding trip takes me and my group out there, but the cops were said to be on the lookout this year so we went to Arkansas and Oklahoma to ride. VERY nice roads - better than Texas' finest. There's another forum I belong to for Texas riders that's pretty good. Here's the link. www.twtex.com

I rode Bandera in July and it was great. However, I must agree that Arkansas is way better. Around here, Bandera is fun. But if you can drive 6-8 hours Arkansas kicks but through there mountains.

Yeah, for me it's a 4 or 5 hour drive to Bandera, and just 2 or 3 more to get to Arkansas. The roads are smoother, have better visibility, and are just better all around. That is my group's new annual pilgrimmage.
