cheers,:beer Rizzer 1 08-01-2002, 10:45 PM Eveyone here says they ride them at 130 and so on. I bring it up in second and ride it to 80 or 90 and hit the balancing point. I turn the wheel the opposite way and lean the way I want to go for steering. Dex 08-01-2002, 11:26 PM It sucks but I am still chasing that elusive balance point most of the time I come really close with my 2nd gear stand ups and can hold them up for quite a while. But I haven't even tried to shift mid wheelie. Draggin 08-01-2002, 11:54 PM i am still learning every aspect of the wheelie...from clutchin her up reliably, not too hard not too soft, and no matter what i do im chasin tha wheelie...
i was practicing sunday and was able to hold her up pretty high through all of 1st gear:boobies
i can get the front end up in second if i clutch it up hard as hell and carry her pretty good...but not as good as 1st....
long story short...im pretty friggin far away from bein a wheelie king... :lol
but, im havin fun... EarlThePearl 08-02-2002, 08:40 AM I'm still chasing but striving for balance point. I know where it is and have found it several times, just can't keep it there. My prob is that 2nd I don't think is the gear to be in. I tried a few 3rd gear stand-ups last night. I can get the wheel up but not all the way. I just gotta find the sweet spot to get it up like I want to. Had the same prob w/ 2nd gear at first, so it's just a learning curve at this point. I'll get some video posted once I get it figured out. brianb 08-02-2002, 08:51 AM Just getting pretty good with 1st. Most of the time I chase but am know to hit the g-spot sometimes.:) mancuso 08-02-2002, 08:58 AM I can hold a wheelie in second at the balance point and keep it at about 50 mph untill my arms start to cramp up. The longest I've done this has been about 3-1/2 to 4 miles. :D
I can hold a third gear wheelie at about 80 mph and ride them even longer.
First gear wheelies are the hardest to keep at the balance point. I've probably held them about a mile. A larger sprocket in the rear would probably increase that though.
Remember, the balance point is WAY back there. When you're there, there is still a ton of weight on the other side of the bike (engine, etc). The R1 has a ton of engine break so it's real easy to adjust the height with the throttle. theron19d 08-02-2002, 09:08 AM Probably between 3/4 and 1 mile in second. PaulZ 08-02-2002, 09:15 AM I like to do 2nd gear wheelies...my problem is not so much chasing the wheelie, but keeping it strait. About 95% of the time, my bike vears off to the right...SUCKS! nimmo 08-05-2002, 06:58 PM I'm for one a wheelie chaser but getting better by the week. JAYSTENSEC4CYL 08-05-2002, 07:16 PM I am still trying to fuigure out this whole wheelie thing...lol sundowners 08-06-2002, 09:36 AM I'm a chaser, 1st and second gear.
Oh how I wish my balls would grow
B selftc 08-06-2002, 09:39 AM i'm definitely a chaser also........ i guess i need to either grow some balls or get the pair i do have out my purse and flick my wrist a little more...... :lol
it will come with time...........:yesnod Maxxym 08-07-2002, 06:30 PM well I can bring mine up but I can't even chase them lol Y2KRedR1 08-07-2002, 07:18 PM Originally posted by mancuso

...sounds like you're ready to go to the next level. Instead of hanging off the back of the bike with both feet on the pegs, put a knee in the seat with one foot on the peg (most likely the left foot, so you can shift if you're so inclined). You have probably done this already, but if you want to ride the really long wheelies, this will get you there. As you practice, put more & more weight on the knee. Eventually, so much weight will be on the knee, you'll even be able to do one-handed standups...mile after mile.
Also, experiment with running the rear tire anywhere from 18psi to 28psi (if you plan on hitting the twisties, you'll probably want to raise the pressure back up first).
Lastly, target fixate. It just works.
Now, let me give credit where credit is due. Greg, (the one on the right - president of SportbikeHype) (http://www.sportbikehype.com/Picupload/Raceteam/SBHRACE85.jpg.html), has been helping me. He told me all these things. They work.
Oh, did I mention? A few weeks ago, Greg did a 41.5 mile wheelie! Believe it! It's on video (though not published yet). Dex 08-09-2002, 12:58 AM If I was able to do a 41.5 mile wheelie I think I would fall asleep and fall off of my bike. LOL
Damn Draggin whats up with clutching up 2nds why not just bounce them up its a whole lot nicer to your bike. I have no problem getting 2nd and 3rd up with out clutching. 1st and 2nd come up fine sitting with just power. And I am like 185 lbs and my bike is mostly stock!!! Draggin 08-14-2002, 05:49 AM heh heh heh, Dex, I can match your 185....then add the 100 pound asian chick i ate for dinner last night...275 pounds of Irish/Korean psycho rides this poor little silver R1....
an accident in a factory and a sugery landed me in a bed for a Long time, so all i had to do for fun was eat..i used to be 185 in great shape, now I have the 100 pound monkey on my back...heres the funny thing...my wife has been on me to lose the weight, etc....and you know what i pick for motivation...I can go faster on my R1 if i lose the weight, wheelie better, maybe try a stand up...HAHA i find that pretty ****in funny (or sad) ohh how we are addicted to our 1....
yah, i have become very good on a 1st gear wheelie now, every time i can ride it to the limiter, and now and again i find the balance point...for 2nd gear i clutch it up around 55 and ride it out till about 95...i need to sit further back so i can get it up higher in the beginning...i have hit the balance point Very few times on a 2nd clutch up...i clutch up al lwheelies because i have become accustomed to how they feel, i like it better..i can clutch up a 1st gear wheelie at a slow roll, 5-10 mph? i am Sure many of you guys can do this from dead stop, but im not there yet...I am leaps and bounds from when i started on the R1 at the beginning of hte summer see yahs have fun and watch yourselves... Sorry 'bout your accident, but you're right about losing weight. I'm not picking on ya, just helping to motivate you to lose the extra poundage. I lost quite a bit of weight after my accident & now am much more capable on the 1 because of it!
Also...and this is more important than you might think (I speak from personal experience)...lose the weight for your wife...your marriage will likely be stronger/better.
Sound shallow? Perhaps...but true, nevertheless. superheero 08-14-2002, 07:31 AM i got like this thing....and its buggin' me i keep thinkn that the bike is gonna flip ova' if i give it more gas..i can do many pop ups but thats about all..i know it will come in time but any wordz of wisdom!!!? Draggin 08-14-2002, 07:41 AM Im on it....I seen some pictures of myself after coming back from the gap a month ago and didnt recognize myself! Its time for a change....
Superhero...you know what it is, its just practice..if you can find a spot of deserted road out in the country, just somewhere to play around uninteruppted, you will get some wheelie basics down, and alot of what you read on the forum will start to make sense..take it slow, you dont wanna loop your bike and go through the bullshit of trying to get her fixed, get yourself fixed up, and lose out on some of the riding season...also, what helped me out was seeing some pics my wife took of me doing wheelies...i seen i had LOTS more room to come up, so I pushed myself to allow the bike to come up higher, now i can ride out 1st and 2nd...but i cant shift yet:) just started tryin that...also tried a standup, but every time i get on the pegs n give her gas, lean back, i feel like im going to get left behind and the bike is going to shoot out from under me....so ill stick to sit downs...for now...keep tryin superheero 08-14-2002, 07:49 AM yeah i see what your sayin...alot of what i read now does make sense but i think i'm just scared of crashin her....where i'm from if u ride the "ONE" people try to pull your card...thinkin that cause u got one u should be able to do 5mile wheelis and shit...so every time i ride i get some asshole tellin me to get it up...sometimes i do but its just 2sec shit......most of the time when someone asks u to wheelie thats when u crash your shit!!!!!!!!and i just cant have that!!!!!!!:D sundowners 08-14-2002, 08:37 AM Draggin,
You’re on the right track with losing weight. I had a good friend in college that was 6'2" and about 275 lbs (if not more). All during college he was that big. His dream was to fly fighter jets for the navy. I thought that there was no way that a 275lb guy was going to live that dream. After graduation, he started to watch what he ate and started walking. The walking started to turn into running, etc, etc. I saw him 1 year later and did not recognize him, he looked totally different, about 180 lbs. and in the best shape of his life. Well, he is now flying F-18's for the navy. He lost all the weight by watching what he ate, not over eating and exercising. He did all this because he had a goal to become a pilot. If your goal is to lose the weight to become a better rider, go for it. :thumbup
Why don't you post your progress every week, I know the guys/gals on this forum will give you support and motivation.
Sorry to get off the topic of wheelies just wanted to show Draggin some support.
Do it bro:thumbup Draggin 08-14-2002, 08:43 AM Thanks!!! I think ill do it...im signing up at my old gym on fri(theyre going to be happy to see me):lol
ill start a post later see yah guys n be careful out there...gotta have eyes in the back of your head with the way people drive...
superheero, i know whatcha mean...its just Everyone is intimidated when they see that sexxy bike and see the R1 badge on it...it does command a presence, Especially among those in the cycle community...they immediately expect you to be a stunter, a 170++ rider, etc.......so i figured..why let them down:lol :lol
im outta here for awhile, gotta do some work see yahs TnTSCS 08-15-2002, 12:00 PM I'm still trying to learn how to wheelie... ;) | |
