The "HONEST REVIEW" is back...
Subject: 2002 R1 Fabbri Dark Tint Double Bubble.
Install: Super easy install, take off the stock screen pull out the little rubber nuts put them in the Fabbri screen and replace the screws. Total time 15 minutes, if you clean both screens with windex.
Look: I think it looks great! Upon close inspection you can see that it doesn't fit like the stock screen, let me explain. The Stock Screen has a edge so that when it is bolted to the body it is flush with the body. The Fabbri screen DOES NOT have that edge so since the Fabbri Screen bolts underneath the body it's like 2 pieces of Plastic sitting on top of each other. See The Second Picture below.
Cost: It was shipped to my house for a total price of $78.50.
Where did I get it: www.indysuperbikes.com a PROUD sponsor of our beloved R1-Forum.com.
Availability: I chose Fabbri simply on the fact that it is the only one that I found to be available at this moment. I ordered mine on a Friday afternoon and had it exactly one week later (7 Days).
Quality of Product: I am very pleased with the shape and quality of the Fabbri Double bubble. I only wish that it had the edge on it that the Stock Screen has so it would sit flush to the the body. That is my ONE and only complaint.
OVERALL: I would rate this screen a 7 out of 10 losing 3 points because of the "sitting flush" issue. Does any other screen have the edge to allow it to sit flush to the body? Let me know!
Here are the Pictures
Here is a picture of the NON-edge. The Fabbri Double Bubble does not sit flush to the body. You can see the little gap in between the Screen and the Body. See my fingertips ?? This is my ONLY complaint about this screen.
Wicked 08-05-2002, 04:26 PM thanks for the review LOOKS GOOOD!
Here is a picture from directly in front of the Bike !!!
Here is the last picture... If you would like to see a certain angle of the Screen let me know and I will take some more pictures !! By the way... www.indysuperbikes.com gave me 10% off because I am a member of this forum !!!
BRBJackson 08-05-2002, 05:32 PM Excellent work (as always) Todd! I like the glazed black, but that dark tint is mighty tasty :thumbup
Decisions, decisions...;)
BRBJackson,
I had already ordered mine when I was introduced to the "GLAZED" look. I think I still would have gotten the Dark Tint only because I want to be able to see through it. Sometimes, I get chilly when I am riding home late at night and I get so low that I feel like I am sitting inside the gas tank. I like the look of the glazed better but I wish you could somehow see through it. Oh well ! I'm happy with what I got!
Also, thanks for the compliments! I try and let everyone know the good and bad about products and I appreciate the positive feedback for my efforts!
Looks good! Nice review! Yeah, I like the 'edge' on the stock windshield also. Oh well.
From that back angle, it looks like it has so much space that you could fit a small child on your instruments! How is the wind protection?
I think the wind protection is great, in a tuck position of course. My natural tuck position sends air straight into the vents on my Arai Edwards Replica Helmet! That's 2 thumbs up from me. On a warm day I got assistance with air going into my helmet. In the Super Tuck position I don't notice the wind at all.
mancuso 08-05-2002, 06:29 PM Anyone have a picture of the "glazed" version on a blue r1?
Benjamin Tang 10-30-2002, 09:07 PM TS02R1... just a thought but do u think using very thin black weatherstripping on the underside of the leading edge of the winshield opening in the upper fairing and then screwing down the shield so that the weatherstripping will be sandwiched in between will get rid of those gaps?
I'd have to familiarize myself a little more with weather stripping and how exactly it works.
From what I am imagining it sounds like it would help seal the gap.
Even though there is a little gap not one person has ever noticed or said anything to me about it. So if it's a huge concern don't let it be. I've accepted it now!
If you ever try the weather stripping thing let me know.
quikag 10-30-2002, 09:15 PM heres a picture of the glazed black on the faster silver 1.
Jims2000R-1 10-30-2002, 09:16 PM Excellent review - as always. :thumbup
Thanks for the info. I was thinking about getting a Fabbri but I think that I will go with Zero Gravity.

954inCO 10-30-2002, 10:20 PM looks very nice! i have a zg double bubble and love it!
XT777 10-31-2002, 08:24 AM That screen looks so sick...i have every intention of getting the glazed screen on my faster silver R1. I had already made plans to do this but seeing it in your picture got me all the more excited about it. What did you think about the fit? Do you know if they make a standard (not Double Bubble) version?
The indysuperbikes.com page on these screens leaves a bit to be desired.

TITANIUMR1 10-31-2002, 10:32 AM TS02R1, Great Review. However that may be the only reason I would not purchase that windscreen. I wonder why they didn't make it fit like factory? Looks awesome on your bike. I like the glazed one too!
ps is that your pug?:thumbup

I spoke to LockHart Phillips when I called to complain about the fitment of my dark smoke screen from them. This dude say that Yamaha uses an injection molding process to make their screens that the aftermarket cannot duplicate. So the after market uses flat pieces and bends them the best they can to fit.
I sent my Lockhart Phillips screen back cause the infamous gap around the screen was 10x worse then the pics above. I've considered buying the tinted scrnn from Yamaha, it's a little pricey but ya get what ya pay for right?
quikag 10-31-2002, 02:33 PM xt777 and everyone else who cares....the fit is exactly as described in the review. It is only noticeable up close and from a certain angle. I say unless you are a 100% anal retentive person I think it is the way to go. Everything else about the screen is top quality...thick, strong, durable plastic, even the fabbri emblem is molded in the plastic with what seems like a clear coat cover. Only thing is if you go to the strip, don't let the fockers wipe shoe polish on it:mad:  . Still won't come off and I've tried everything. Let me know if ya'll want more info.

Yep that's my PUG and his name is "Macho". And I'm proud to say that the muscle shirt he is wearing... well... I made it for him on the sewing machine !!!!
On a note about this Fabbri Double Bubble. The Yamaha one does fit perfect but once you have the Fabbri on for a little bit you won't even notice the little gap. You won't be disappointed.
MikeR1 10-31-2002, 05:04 PM I think I'm just going to spray my stock shield flat black and see how it comes out. I planned on replacing it anyway so if it looks terrible, no big deal. Has anyone attempted this?

There's been a gazillion posts on spraying stock screens on this forum.
I haven't done it but word is only spray the inside! And do lots of light coats!
MikeR1 10-31-2002, 05:40 PM Hey, thanks bro! Will do.
AaronR1 11-02-2002, 09:25 PM I also have the dark smoke screen on my 02. Like Todd said it looks great and you can only see it from a certain angle. That is my only complaint with it also. But no one has noticed the gap on it but me either.
Imback 12-30-2002, 10:32 PM Does the ZG DB have the gap problem?

I used to have that same wind screen and after awhile I hated the way it fit. I do not know how good it really works if the wind gets past the terrible fit on the sides. I think stock has the best fit. There is a reason why Yamaha spends lots of money on designing there products. So I sanded the inside, painted it black, and then shot it clear then I color sanded and buffed it. It looks great and fits the way it should.
Here is a picture of it let me know what you think!

Andreas Miko 01-03-2003, 02:57 AM I bought the Power Bronze and it had the same problem as listed above. It did not come with the ridge to make it fit flush just like the stock glass. So I went and got the Yamaha one right from the dealer and it to does not sit like the factory original clear one. THe Yamaha tinted screen also fits under ther plastic and does not have the ridge to make it sit flat. I am selling my Power Bronze for $50 shipped to anyone in the US and I am also selling my Yamaha one for $50 shipped also.

PsychoBlueR1 01-03-2003, 06:08 AM 10 minutes with some semi-gloss black spray paint, and voila!!!

Not alot of protection, but looks damn good, and saved me $80.
JL/R1/2002 01-03-2003, 08:50 PM I 've ordered the Fabbri black glazed windscreem from Chris for my 02 R1 Silver yesterday. It's great to see the black glazed total match the colour combination of my bike (mat black). Hoping the mis-fit problem can be acceptable. The double bubble look seem to increase the space around the front for a steering damper, too. So, I also place the order together (ohins and Magic mushroom) to save some freightage. I like the bike look cool but not too fancy. So, I take the liquid silver colour. Could anyone give me a suggestion of the exhaust pipe. I'm looking for some mat black/liquid silver colour, tri-oval shape slip on type, or any which can match the bike. Happy New Year all of you and enjoy your ride.

Here is a picture of my pipe.
Let me know what you think!

Before I saw your bike, I've the idea to powder coated a tri oval shape pipe for my bike (the brand of pipe not yet decided).
What I guess it is quite troublesome to dismantle the pipe into parts before powder coating. I also worries can the powder coating stand for the hot of the pipe.
So what kind of finish it is your pipe ? You do a great job on it.
Do you mind if I copy your idea on my bike.

The pipe was not powdercoated. Somebody from a company near Color Zone Designs hooks Matt with the product. Do not powdercoat your pipe I have had the pipe on for about 6 weeks no problem at all! That stuff is the best give Matt a call at (714)-892-9176 tell him you heard it from the R1 forum.
Draggin 01-06-2003, 11:49 PM that glazed double bubble looks cool from a few angles, but damn.....
that thing looks like a gold wing windscreen.....is it realy that huge?....it looks like it may ruin the lines of the bike....i dont know, every time i see it from the riders perspective, it looks like it comes up too high....what do you think....does it look alittle outta place to you, does the benefit of having it rise up like that really outweigh the looks department?...just curious...i was leaning the way of spraypainting my windscreen black on the inside.......
Flyer 01-07-2003, 06:55 AM First - Thx Todd for the review.
When painting the inside of the stock screen I would first wet sand it to scuff the entire surface to allow the paint to stick (and stay on).
I've done this to paint bass drum heads on my drum set and it works great.
Any of you autobody guys agree or recommend another technique?
tidbit 01-07-2003, 11:49 AM yah sand it with a 600 grit.. :yesnod
tidbit 01-07-2003, 11:50 AM the dbl bubble doesn't ruin lines... it actually makes your mirrors look like they belong there! :thumbup .. form AND function IMO.. :yesnod

I have the smoke tint DB Fabbri and it is not that bad.....I think it enhances the lines more. From a functional point of view it is waaaay better than the stock especially when tucking. You also do not feel the intensity of the wind against your helmet as much when you are in your normal riding posture.
As far as the gap goes...Yes it is alittle obvious from some angles however it is not that bad. Yes it maybe a very minor fitment issue but It could have something to do with increasong flex distance and reducing vibration transfer.
Regardless the quality of the screen is fantastic
racinrick 01-12-2003, 07:40 AM I had the Fabbri Double Bubble on one of my '02 R1s. I loved the affect of getting the wind up over my head and around the shoulders, but hated the fitup. That gap was too much for my liking. I talked with the store, and they said they'd only had one other complaint about fitup - funny, as I keep seeing more.
Depending on wind, etc., that gap created whistling. Also. who wants water pouring all over the inside from leaking through the gap?
After all the reading of posts, I'm going to Zero Gravity.
EUROVAMP 01-15-2003, 09:34 AM I just got my Fabbri Glazed windscreen and also noticed the gaps. I noticed on the inner part of the fairings where the holes for the screws are there is a washer epoxyed under the hole. I was wondering if I were to grind it off with a dremmel tool, would it narrow the gap? Was wondering if anyone has tried this already. This is a pic of the washers I am talking about.

:iamwithst , thanks for the review Todd. I am not a fan of the "Double bubble" look. I just think they are too high. I like the stock profile better. I have been thinking about painting my stock, but sometimes I get low enough that I need to look through it, so maybe I'll just keep it. Either way, thanks for sharing your experience.
XT777 01-15-2003, 02:00 PM i took my stock windshield off and put it in the oven...then the stickers pealed right off.
then i sanded the whole thing down with 220...that actually looked pretty cool...all frosty.
A couple coats of primer.
Couple coates of flat black and now it looks sick.
I also don't like the double bubble look.
This cost me about 6-7 dollars and it looks better than i ever could have hoped.
I would consider this to be a legit alternative to new expensive shield.

02'-LS-R1 02-12-2003, 01:34 PM It is the clear though.
The Fabbri is a little thicker than the ZG one.
tidbit 02-14-2003, 10:07 AM but the fabbri doesn't fit :fact
