Ocoee White Water Rafting trip on Saturday of East Coat Convention

Ok, southern118 has been working on a White Water Rafting trip to the Ocoee River on Saturday of the Convention. Reason for saturday is because most everyone will be there then and also the Gap is really crowded on the weekends so it would be a good opportunity to do something different. Now, here are the details. We will be doing the Ocoee River in GA. It is about 45 miles from Robbinsville. So we are looking at at least an hour to get there. The Ocoee has 3 sections. We will be doing the middle section. Supposed to be really good. Now, I am pretty sure we need to be at the Outfit by no later than 10:30. I think the rafting starts at 11:00. So depending on the route we take to get there, hershell suggested a longer but really cool route, we will need to leave probably between 8:00-8:30. If that changes I will let you know. We need to book a spot ASAP so let's get a list of who all is in Here is a link with info. http://www.raftinginthesmokies.com/ocoee.htm thanks, chad LIST: Southern118 Gawarrior Skeeter boxing21 tranceportmidl ZRider BigSexy kevap+1

I don't think doing the upper is worth the extra money. Its not that long & there is only 1 section thats has a good run. I have been on the middle & there is only 1 section thats is slow the rest kicks ass. But if everyone wants to do both thats fine with me.

Maybe we should consider just doing the middle then. Less money and we don't have to leave as early.

I think I'm going to vote for the middle run only. If everyone else wants to do the whole thing, that's fine, I'll go with it. I just think things will be less stressed for time if we just do the middle, this will leave us plenty of time to get back, clean up, and cook some grub :hellobye

If we just do the middle I know a route to the Ocoee that may take a little longer but is a blast to ride.

Ok, here is my input. I voted for the middle. I agree, there will be a lot going on Saturday for sure. Plus, keep in mind there will be a lot of people getting loose on Friday night, so it may be a little hard to get to sleep then get up at 6:30 am so we can leave by 7am. Plus, this will give us more time to get there and not have to rush. I like the idea of taking the longer route like Hershell suggested. Plus, it will be a little cheaper. Then once we do it and see what it's like we can plan a better raft trip for the '06 convention. Use this year to kind of feel it out and see what it's like.

Randy... hold that thought until we get some more facts about the trip. I don't think it's gonna be an all day type thing. According to the website, the rafting is only 1 1/2 hours long. So with the ride there and back being around 1 1/2 hours each way... that's 4 1/2 hours total. If we leave at 9am, we would be looking at being back to Fontana around 2pm even after grabbing a quick lunch at Mickey Ds or something. Plently of time for us to help out with the food and prizes.

Ok, I have a question. I'm sure we will be riding in full gear to and from the place we are going, so do we have a secure place to store our leathers and helmets? I'd be really pissed to come back from rafting to find out our gear got jacked by some backwoods dueling banjo playing mofo's. Then, we'd all have to buy it back off eBay cause that's where it would end up at!!! James, can you check with the people about storing our gear? Perhaps they can provide some lockers or something? If we can get back around 2 or 3pm I'd be in then.

I was checking their website, and you have to wear sneakers, so I'm going to bring a back pack to put those in. But I would feel MUCH better if we had somewhere to lock all our gear in, than to just leave it sitting on my bike. It said on the website that they recoment you lock any valuables in your car, and that their parking lot was "secure". So I'm not sure if they have anywhere we can put our things. Absolute worst case sinerio, I could drive my truck, and we could put everyones gear in that. Although that would take a lot of the fun out of the ride down, I'd be willing to do that for everyone. And we should be back around 2 if my calculations are correct :dunno

Also, you may not need your full leathers since you are just riding down and back. Just maybe a jacket and jeans. But still be careful on the mountain roads, but it should be a good cruising ride. I am sure it wouldn't hurt to wear them though if you wanted too.

Yea, there's a few fun routes to take. Either leave out going thru the gap, to 72, to 411, to 360, to Tellico Plains. Or, head up to crot, and head down 129, take Cherohala Skyway to Tellico Plains. From Tellico Plains, head west on 39, then south on 315, cross Hiwassee River, south on 30, it ends at Ocoee River at hwy 64. Head east on 64 about 10-12 miles to the whitewater place. It's about 105-110 miles either way. And there are more side roads to take, also. There's not much food choices in Tellico Plains, there's a Hardees and 1 restaurant, that I know of. This route looks awesome. Lots of backroads. Leave Fontana Village around 8:30am and head down 28 to Robinsville. Take the Cherohala Skyway over to Tellico Plains. We will arrive at Tellico Plains around 10:15am. I say we stop here, get something to eat (probably breakfast) and fill up the gas tanks. Hitting the backroads... SR-30 looks amazing down by the bottom left of the map. Then we pop out onto highway 64 and head east for a few and finally arrive at White Water Rafting. My Garmin software says 114 miles and 2 1/2 hours travel time. So leave Fontana approx. 8:30am, arrive in Tellico Plains approx. 10:15. Eat something and gas up 10:45. Arrive at White water rafting approx. 11:30am. Rafting at 12! Leaving rafting approx. 1:30pm gas up again in Ducktown and arrive back to Fontana around 3 - 3:30pm.

Only thing I don't like about that route is I can't go. :cryin Even if you don't go rafting it would be worth going just to do the ride.

When you cross the Hiwassee River at Reliance, you turn left on Hwy 30 and the curves start getting tighter, not quite Deal's Gap, but purdy tight. :riding Hwy 64 is wider road, would be nice run, but lots of kayaker/rafter's vehicles and buses running up and down the road. Is it 12days? 10 days for some? do I here 9 more days? :fork BluAreWun :fork

Well... maybe not that much! hahahaah :lol Kevin, I think your pumped for this whitewater trip. Here's some words about the ocoee from some local outfitters: The Middle Ocoee is action-packed from start to finish! The twenty-six Adventure Class rapids on this five-mile stretch of river make it one of the South's most popular rivers. Choose the classic Middle Ocoee for a half-day of continuous, roller-coaster fun. Continuous pushy waves and sudden drops characterize Ocoee whitewater. Don't forget to take a moment to enjoy the scenery of this lovely corridor of the Cherokee National Forest. Sound like fun? :jump :jump :jump It will be a blast! :D :D :D ps: I tried to insert some pics of a couple of the ocoee rapids, but it's not working. :dunno all I get is a hyperlink to the pic. :fork BluAreWun :fork

Something else I was thinking about. For those that are going you might want to ride with a back pack or tank bag. This will provide the storage to put your swim trunks or cut off's in plus a pair of old tennis shoes or sandals. I plan to take a air tight tupperware type container for my camera. Cause I just gotta get some pictures for the forum and those who want them. I'll be using my tank bag to store all this stuff in plus maybe some sun screen and anything else I can think of. I'm really starting to get pumped for this.

I will get some really strong HEFTY lawn bags (EXTRA LARGE) and some labels so we can tell who's stuff is who's. I'll bring them down with me for everyone. How many people do we have now James?

Definitely, take Hwy 30 to the rafting! It is one of the best technical roads up there! I hit it two weeks ago and I am going back on Sunday. D'broomR6 and Guru were kind enough to show me the road. I hope to join you guys, but I won’t be able to commit until January or February. Is slow and old okay?
