Anybody heard about the airbox mod to remove some runners in there to increase midrange by 7hp? Someone told me there was a post with pictures on what to do.

From what I have read the addition of graves velocity stacks will add 5 hp. to the midrange and 2hp. to the topend. Also Graves is going to come out with a new airbox and filter of the 02's (30 - 60 days) that will add an additional 5 - 7 hp.:thumbup

I ordered the velocity stacks from www.tobefast.com for $94.00 and they are going to arrive today.:rock :thumbup :)

I got the velocity stacks from tobefast.com also. They really make a difference. 2nd gear power wheelies are soooooooo much easier now. They are worth the money and the guys at tobefast.com are great to work with.

Yeah I know about the velocity stacks, I have them. I am asking about the removal of material in the airbox which changes the airflow. It works because a friend of mine did it and can now run side by side with a GSXR1000. He doesn't tell most people what he does cecause he would like people to think he is just a better rider and that his bike is faster than ours. He is a complete ASS!! Has been drag racer although Ex-World Champion. Point is, the modification is posted somewhere and he did it and it works! I am asking if anyone here knows about it, where I can find it or how to do it. I am not buying a new air box when this one can be simply altered to do the same thing. The only way to improve the air box is to make it bigger or include ram-air anyway and that requires too much money and a new tank(more money) to allow for the larger airbox.

I don't know what you could do to make that kind of horsepower difference with a simple airbox mod. I hope someone on this forum can come up with what you are looking for 'cause I would like to know about it.

I know IVAN ( of IVANSPERFORMANCEPRODUCTS.com) just released an air box mod for the 98-01 R1's with pics of how to do it. I am not aware of any 02 mods yet.

Where is this info?? I could not find it on the site. I keep hearing (reading) you guys talk about this. I REALLY want to find out what's involved and if there really is any truth to the gains you get.

Help?

The information is on the "other" R1 site. (yzf-r1forum.com). It does work. I have had an airbox mod done to my bike for over a year. I have ivan's jet kit, and the full Akrapovic. My bike has always been faster up top than other R1 (even with the Ivan's / Akra MOJO) but ran rather poorly under 4k rpm. I was not able to give it wide open throttle under 4K rpm. However above 5k rpm it was a bullet.

After reading about IVAN's mod, I changed my main jets to 130's instead of the 132.5's as per IVAN's instructions and also changed out my stock air filter for a k&n filter. The difference is night and day. The bike pulls cleaner and stronger everywhere. I can give it W.O.T. at 2k and it pulls clean. It will pull to the rev limiter in 6th gear everytime (193mph indicated) where as before it would pull to high 180's everytime before, but not to the limiter.

I am going to have my bike dyno'ed and see if the mixture is what IVAN told me it should be. If it is (and I am sure it is) I will make some more of the airbox plates like the one I have and sell them. Unfortunatly IVAN's pic's are not very clear. So the DIY method proves difficult.

It requires that you grind away some material that creates an air channel. I think something else has to come out too. But I know it works and there are pictures directions somewhere on the web because that is what this guy did.

OK,
Here is a basic description of what needs to be done to modify the airbox on a 2002 R1. Not any other model!
Inside the airbox is a baffle which diverts the air to back of the box, remove it. Turn the snorkle on the fron of the box to face the front of the bike. Like I said it is basic because I haven't a) been in the airbox yet or b) done it myself. This works according to a very seasoned engine builder/ex-world champion drag racer. He has done it to his bike and the only other mod is a slip on RS3 Yosh and he runs side-by side with a GSXR1K that has been re-mapped and has a Yosh RS-3 slip on as well. He couldn't run with him before modifying the airbox.
ANYBODY HAVE DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO DO THIS FROM THE WEB? Every link I have gotten refers to carburated pre-2002 R1's and has NO relavence to the new airbox.

actually, if you turn the snorkel backwards, it looks all fine and dandy, until you bolt the air box lid down to the frame.
If you look past the bottom of the triple clamps and forks, with a flash light, you will see that it protrudes too far, and bends in half against the rad shroud.

soo to fix that you have to cut it down.

on mine, from the groove with the lips that insert and seal around the hole in the airbox, i cut the long side just a tad longer than the other side, too keep it from bending in half (due to being too long) when it's INSTALLED.

then i cut the middle vane out. (the big rubber rib)
and smoothed an contoured it all with a razor.

i also added foam around the air box and engine, and cut aaway the rain+noise baffles that are right above the radiator infront of the airbox opening.

soo that the only air being sucked in is fresh cool air, and not hot air coming off the engine.

as for how it all worked, well i did that mod, and at the same time installed a bmc filter, and my bike
(running a yosh box and full akro) ran lean across the rev range.
i had to bump the fuel map up between 1-5 percent above the current akro map i was running.

next i'm gonna get some graves stacks soo i'll let you know how that goes.

Thanks for the info 02r1. Finally some detail. Please let me know what happens with the velocity stacks as I have them coming along with the acro exhaust.

if i just cut away the rain/noise baffles that should make a difference right??

I have a DNA Air filter and yosh slip on.

we really need more info on this mod...
can't find sh#t on here......

I will post a pic shortly on the airbox mod. I just installed stacks and slide stops as well as modified the airbox. I was planning on doing a "How-to" for the slide stop install later.

I was taking the bike apart to get to the plugs and noticed that a previous owner had basically cut the entire front of the airbox OFF exposing it to fresh air I suppose, or at least more than it was getting.....

Well I have basic engineering ability and a degree to prove it I guess I will figure out something on my own...
