Hey fellow riders, I have a problem with my 02 R1. My bike is near new as I seldom ride it since I'm in and out of the country (US) for most of the time. I have my family start up the bike on the stand every week but when i brought it down from the stand and started her up, it will go into gear but would stall for some reason. Any idea at all? My bike has less than 2000 miles on it and have changed the motor oil at around 500 miles. I try to take good care of her but I guess she's mad at me for leaving her for so long (been about a year now). Any mechanical help or advice is greatly appreciated fellas. Thanks a bunch.
Regards,
C.

Is the kickstand down? Sounds like the kickstand switch. Or maybe check you clutch.

Yeah kickstand switch.
By the way, don't periodically start the bike. Change the oil and filter, get a trickle charger, fill the tank, add stabalizer and let it sit. Constantly starting it ( Without a proper ride to fully bring it to temperature ) does more harm than good.

Ronin, thanks for the speedy response! I don't think it's the stand as I was ready to ride off after warming up and it was up. Just once i step it into 1st gear or whatever gear (2 too) it will just choke. If it was the kickstand how can i check? Also how can i check the clutch, shoot i don't even know where's the clutch :( Sorry a bad mechanic and a beginning rider :(

Well, if it is not the kickstand switch, then I would guess if you didn't have fuel stabilizer in it and it has been sitting for a year - chances are the gas is bad. :(

what is that stabalizer? Is it some additives for the fuel/gas tank so it doesn't rust? What if i let it idle till it's dry?
Well i don't think it's the gas because the bike starts up just fine, just that I can't put it in gear :( thanks for everyone's help so far.

If its running till you try and put it into gear then the clutch has locked up !!!!

anyone know how I can unlock the clutch? Any easy way? Like banging on some parts? Hahah :( it only hurts when you laugh...anyways, that's what I thought too.
So 2 things i should check, the kickstand switch and the clutch lockup.
More research! :(

im thinking your clutch is rusted or dried up, i would also drain the gas out and refill it with some fresh gas...gas is only good for a couple months AT BEST..i'm amazed it started at all...it is probably all gummed up in your fuel system...

I meant for general storage. Your fuel tank is just that. A tank for your bikes fuel, not a fuel storage tank. Fuel breaks down over time into varsol. Kind of bad for your engine. Stabalizer helps stabalize the fuel.

My clutch was recently locked up from sitting so long. As soon as I put it in gear, it just cut off. If it's your clutch, try this. With the bike off and in first gear, hold the clutch in and push the bike. If the bike don't move then your clutch plates are locked up. Just let the bike warm up, turn it off and repeat the first gear pushing to force the plates free.
