I'm in the process of raising the sliders through the triple clamps and I have a quick question. I hope I can explain myself properly.

The stock front tubes are goldish color but topped with a silver color plate approx. 3mm thick which has a slightly smaller diameter than the tubes themselves. They were installed from the dealer with the top of this top silver plate flush with the top yoke. However, I just looked at the service manual and the illustration seemed to suggest that they should have been mounted with the top of the gold tube flush with the yoke. The question is, which is correct? I ask since it makes a difference in how far I'll raise the tubes through the clamps to get a proper 5mm adjustment. Simply put, to raise the front sliders 5mm properly, should 5mm of gold tube be showing or 5mm of combined gold tube and top silver plate be showing?

Hope the question makes sense. Waiting for any help I can get. Thanks in advance.

The correct standard fork height is gold tube flush with top yoke. So your bike hasnīt been put together correctly. And for the correct 5 mm lowering, 5 mm of gold tube should protrude above the yoke surface.

Iīd check the rest of the bike thoroughly, too. If that kind of stuff isnīt correct, what else have the bike shop chimps messed up?

Just as I suspected! Thanks Mattais1. Better get out the old torque wrench and start the real inspection.

One thing to add, I dropped my '99 bike through the forks 10mm nto long after I got it, installed 8.5 Ohlins fork springs and an Ohlins rear shock at 10mm up (ride hight). The bike steers so much faster than any of my buddies machines and holds a very tight line however, I do need the steering damper now..

I just installed a Penske triple adjustable rear shock and had my front suspension resprung and revalved by Traxxion Dynamics. Raised the rear by 5mm, lowered the front by 5mm and the bike's a totally different animal. Much more precise and much crisper at turn in and holding a line. Can't believe it's the same bike really. I'm gonna install an AP 320mm brake kit and Marvic Piuma wheels next week and the metamorphosis will be complete! Just wish the weather would start to get warmer now so I could take full advantage of the changes.
