CURRENT NEWS: TAIL OF THE DRAGON has been named as one of the best websites for North Carolina bikers by BIKERS MAGAZINE. Thanks ! May 22 Sunday: Heard from many riders that the Saturday TN crackdown made them stay away from the Wakin Rally. Too bad for the Rally and local TN businesses. Sunday the TN HP was back at it again with at least six units on the road issuing tickets and harassment. One group of riders who were obeying all traffic laws were pulled over and checked closely for violations and paperwork before being allowed to proceed. We also heard from car drivers that tickets were issued for not wearing seatbelts even though the occupants were wearing them. We didn't hear any reports of harassment by Blount County SO. Seems this was a TN HP event. Want to complain .. CLICK HERE May 21 Saturday: Well if you read the local area newspapers youÕd think the Wakin the Dragon was a huge success thanks to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. We heard some stories that are not quite so pleasant. By 9:00 am there were 2 wreckers standing by, EMS units with engines warmed, assorted Blount County Sheriff cars, mobile command posts with donut stand, 5 THP cars stationed on the Dragon and 4 THP cycles rolling. Then the THP helicopter came swooping over É. looked like a terrorist attack was imminent. Once the biker parade of some 100 maniacal cycle revolutionaries cleared the state line the license check stops and ticket writing began. Welcome to Tennessee all you riders and sports car drivers. Tickets were issued for such serious violations as not having proof of insurance, license plate placement and doing 39 in a 30. WeÕve seen little old ladies in mini-vans going faster than that. The one stop that we have the most concern with was a friend who was stopped for doing 47 in a 30. He had no problem with taking his lumps and a ticket, but the TN HP Trooper came running up shouting ÒWhat in the G--- D--- hell are you doing,Ó and then carried on nastily as he issued the citation. Our friend is an ordained minister and did not particularly care for the unprofessional treatment. How about investigating this incident TN HP? By contrast the North Carolina side showed no sign of increased LEO presence and all was calm. Residents were not hiding their women and children as masses of uniformed troopers gathered. Hint É. If you plan to ride the Dragon on a weekend come with a legal bike, proper paperwork, and let the mini-vans lead the way. But you might still get a ticket for looking at an officer oddly. Safer bet É ride and spend your money in biker friendly North Carolina until TN comes to their senses. May 20 Friday: Looks like a big TN LEO presence on US129 leading to the Dragon. They have a command post set up with EMS service along the river. We hope that it is a friendly presence and that they are welcoming the many visitors to Wakin the Dragon. After some heavy rains early this morning, the weather broke mid afternoon and looks to be good weather the next few days. May 17 Tuesday: Just wanted to make some comments about the local LEO's. We've had several complimentary comments about the Blount Co TN SO and Graham Co SO. Sportbikers reported being stopped for various reasons and were let go with a warning and a friendly "be careful and enjoy your stay". We want to personally thank these agencies for treating our guests in a positive manner. However, this doesn't mean you have a free ticket to break the law. Ride safely and obey our traffic laws. May 15 Sunday: Just about a rain-out. The sun did pop out late in the afternoon to allow for some fun. May 14, Saturday: A cacophony of sounds on the Dragon today. The two strokers won with the blue smoking - mosquito snuffing exhaust. Second place went to the muscle cars with a close third to the potato potato cruisers. Honarable mention to the many sport bikes and a few bicylists early in the day. Fairly good weather in spite of a couple morning showers and a mini twister that rolled thru at 5:30 pm. No serious incidents or need for strict enforcement noted. Forecast for tomorrow .... wait until late morning to start your day, afternoon looks clear. May 12, Thursday: Weather looks good for Saturday and hopefully it will last thru Sunday. Road is clean. Expect LEO's to be patrolling the Dragon and area roads. RUMORS - We recently heard of a rumor that BCSO would stage increased enforcement on Saturday May 28. BCSO advised us that there will be the normal presence thru the holiday weekend, but no special ops are planned. They did confirm a MEDIA EVENT on June 4 at 1pm near the entrance to the Foothills Parkway (we will be there). ALSO... The next few weeks will be busy on the Dragon and other area roads. Plan on serious LEO presence and ride with courtsey and safety. Some rumors about the Dragon's future. The first involves a proposed Interstate that will follow US129 from Robbinsville to Knoxville CLICK HERE This is virtually impossible because of various endanged species that exist in the area and the fact that US129 ROW borders the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, a hands off area for any such projects.

That last time I was down there (a couple of years ago) cops were everywhere. I was on a family vacation at the time at Fontana(same place you are going). There was some kind of huge motorcycle convention going on. They had road blocks about every 3 miles up to the dam. At about the third road block my dad asked what the hell was going on. The cop replied "we have had a lot of deaths up here this year and we know this convention is going on so we are trying to save there lives. We have to stop every vehicle to make it legal." Most of the bike up there had race plastic and were def not street legal. The cops were not giving fix it tickets they were just asking for dl and insurance paper. It was something just to disrupt the ride and so people would not drive crazy. I have to say I don't blame them for doing this kind of thing. After watching countless videos and see first hand how people ride on that rode something needs to be done. This is not the track and it scares the shit out of you(cage driver) when you are on a curvy ass road with tons of motorcycle flying by on blind turns. I know most of you don't ride like this (I hope not) but as always there is the few that drive like maniacs, get killed then ruin it for all of us.

I'd say they could set up 100 checkpoints and it would be legal. Why would it be illegal? Especially when they can justify it by claiming they want to make sure everyone is safe. Lets not be the pot calling the kettle black here. We dont want cops to "harrass" us, but I guarantee 99% of us that ride through the gap break about 10 posted laws each time we do it. Well mainly guys this trip is for the comradery of meeting folks from the forum and having a good time. Secondly is the riding. It is some great riding for sure. In my experience at the Gap I have found the good times to ride are Weekends: before 10 a.m. and after 6p.m. in between either just cruise or hang out and watch the show. sometimes going up the Gap and finding a good place to chill and watch people is a lot of fun. Another option is to go check out some different roads. Sometimes it is good to just go exploring and see where it leads you. YOu may find a road you never knew about and it be awesome! Like Kneedragger said, Georgia has awesome roads and it is not nearly as crowded or police protected at the Gap, mainly because they are pretty spread out. Not the same road over and over. Lastly, I would like to say that we will see how things go this year, but if it becomes no fun because of the over police presence then we can look at having the convention somewhere else. There are other GREAT motorcycle roads where we can have our convention. I will just have to find a place large enough to handle our big group. The trackday idea is a good one,but generally that is just one day and it will be much more expensive that a mountain trip. But it would be fun. Maybe we can do a Fall R1 Forum East Coast Trackday. I am thinking maybe VIR. WE can discuss that for this year at the Convention. I do know that the police presence will be very small the week before our convention. Just an inside source, can tell why or it may ruin it. But hopefully that will carry over to our week and if we are lucky into our weekend too. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Been there many times, and yes the roads are good but nowhere near what NC/TN/GA have to offer. I can go to northern KY and ride roads that are just as good as AR. besides, steep and crooked switchbacks suck to ride. They are so tight that you literally have to slow down and steer through them.

I used to ride to Deal's Gap once a month . . . . years ago. But after it was written up in one of the major magazines circa 1993 or thereabouts, I only go once a year. Too many bikes, cars, traffic, and especially law enforcement. It used to be you could go during the week, but that's beginning to change (see other comments posted in this thread concerning Thursday and Friday) also. So I most likely won't go there this year until late fall, when it's cold and only the true diehard sportriders (like ME) are still out. And Johnny Law feels like its getting to cold out for what they think are 2 wheeled idiots. You guys can protest, and write letters, and complain to local government all you want. But it won't change what's being done at the Gap. I've heard it all before, same old sh*t, in the past, and it gets worse and worse each year. And as long as the local government thinks it's doing a service by showing a presence at Deal's Gap, writting tickets, and harrasing the bikes (cause that's the group that started it all), this stuff will continue. Least you forget, it's also a way to generate revenue, so it definitely won't stop for a long time. So good luck to those who make the trek to the most famous 12 miles, 318 corners in the United States.

Just checked www.tailofthedragon.com and it seems the Police harrassment has cooled down a bit. Lets hope it stays that way! :yesnod May 29: Wow .... talk about some awesome Rolling Thunder. Thousands of bikers converged on the Dragon and most of them were cruisers echoing the roar across the Gap. Heard about a couple of minor incidents and one that could have been much worse when a pick-up truck in the wrong lane side swiped a cruiser. Rider was transported with non-life threathening injuries. Serious accident on 28 near Fontana and a two bike accident on the Cherohala Skyway at mile 10 resulted in transports CLICK HERE TO SEE OUR WARNINGS. Actually a fairly safe day for the number of bikes. No LEO activity noted on the Gap. May 27-28: Friday was fairly busy with a couple of non-life threatening accidents. One gal on a cruiser ran into the bank at the Hump trying to keep up with her group. Please ride at your own comfortable pace. A cruiser rider airlifted from the Cherohala late Friday. Saturday was much busier with a majority of cruisers celebrating their own Rolling Thunder. Heard that there were many complaints against the Tennessee Highway Patrol for the past weekend. Looks like they might have calmed the uncalled for harassement. No major LEO activity noted so far this weekend. Also be aware of repaving on US 129 in the Robbinsville area. - might be some sections with gravel present. two bike accident on the Cherohala Skyway at mile 10 resulted in transports -- this was the deadly corner I made a warning post about (CLICK HERE (http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=1773911#post1773911) for that post) in the main convention thread... be careful at mile marker 10 in North Carolina guys and gals. :fact

Georgia does not care about turn signals or our tags! If you use your hand signals theres nothing that they can do! I,ve asked many of "GSP" and they say its ok long as your tag is readable and you use your hand signals! How hard is it to stick your hand in the air! :thumbup
