2001 R1 cylinder #2 & #3 not sparking

Hey guys, I have a 2001 R1, cylinders #2 & #3 quit sparking as I was in the passing lane at ~100 Mph. We checked both coils, spark plug wires, spark plug caps, on all 4 cylinders, with good continuity. We also swapped coils between #1 / #4 & #2 / #3, the no spark problem stayed on #2 & #3. We checked continuity of the orange and gray trigger wires from the coils to the ignitor unit (CDI), which were good. We checked continuity of the trigger wires from the trigger coil to the ignitor unit, which were good. We also checked resistance of the trigger coil, good. We checked 12v on the black/red striped wire (hot) with the key ON and got 12v, and also checked the trigger wires dead at the same time, basically checking for grounds and shorts. We checked the wiring harness connections good. Also noted that the tach is giving a 7000 RPM code, so we checked the EXUP system, servomotor, cable tension, and fuel sender, with no noted problems. My question is: Has anyone had a similar experience ?, OR can anyone give me a good troubleshooting tip to figure this one out ? We cannot figure out why a 7000 RPM code would make cylinders #2 & #3 to stop sparking. We ordered an ignitor unit as a contingency, which is currently in the mail. Thank you for your responses in advance, I think this forum is an awesome tool. Thanks again, Michigan

sounds like you have narrowed it down to the ecu/ignitor. Do you have one you can swap it with?

no we do not have a spare to test, nor do we have a buddy with an R1 to swap and check it out. Thanks for the reply. Any idea why we get a 7000 rpm code, with #2 & #3 not sparking ? Thanks for your initial reply

Some circuit in the ECU which may be related to the exup signal may be bad...who knows from a distance :)

Say,when you say you swapped coils, just a swap,or you swapped the wires too (main harness wires)?

Bringing this thread back to close the loop. Talked to the guy that originally had the problem, and replacing the CDI unit did correct his problem. I have the same problem with a 99 R6 and thought it would be good to add the conclusion in case someone else may have this issue. :rock :riding
