1st gear is a good gear to get the feel of the bike wheeling. But 1st gear is also very volatile!! You need to learn 2nd gear wheelies. Get up to around 45-65 MPH using your first two fingers feather the clutch and gas it to 6500 RPM's do this all in one motion. I a few weekends you will get much better. Once you get the hang of it you can just be running down the road and drop down to 2nd and wheelie with no problem. NOTE: If your dropping down to 2nd from 6th always check to see that your in 6th NOT 5th. I looped my 99 cause I was in 5th and dropped to 1st!!!!!!

MY WRECK
(This wreck happend Mothers Day of 2001 I have a new 02 now. )

I was running around 55 to 60mph and getting ready to walk it. I thought was dropping down to 2nd from 6th but dropped down from 5th 1st . The bike came up SOOOO FAST! Then I think the bike went over on it's right side. Then it flipped over the front tire and slide backwards on it's left side and came to rest on the right side of the road. I came off superman like with my arms in front of me. I rolled on my side around and around for about 30 feet. I was out of work for 6 weeks. Had a broke collar bone and a good bit of roadrash. It took all of the skin off of the inside of my hands.

Just a reminder don't be like me!!

So have fun!! Think of everything that could go wrong!! WARE YOUR GEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wow , heavy storie dude...
these stories are good to remind to stay safe.

The more you stunt, the more you lose control over reality.

thx for sharing !!

I hear ya about that 5th gear thing...

what I always do is to make sure I am on neutral first and then just shift up one....

A few tips I learned the hard way!!

When your dropping down to 2nd from 6th just keep an eye on your neutral light and if it dosen't flash you'll be good to go.

You can also dobble check to see if your in 6th before dropping to 2nd.

********Note: I'm writeing about clutching it 2nd gear<<<<

Happy Walking :D

Gary Rothwell says on his website to use the clutch in 1st gear a R1. That's a good way to loop it I say!! I know for sure I did it.

I would roll on in 1st gear 15 to 30 MPH.

Clutch it in 2nd rear running 45-65 MPH at 6,000 to 7,000 RPMS

My Bud Dee can shift gears while walking his 99. He can go up to 6th gear at around 130 MPH. He can walk it for a mile or more!!

Another friend with a 2000 R6 Could do stand-ups for 2 or 3 miles in 2nd gear. He would get the front up so high it would say up easier and not try to fall at around 90 MPH.

I don't read it that way, he is saying don't use the clutch to get the wheel up but shift from 1st to 2nd with the wheel about 2' off the ground. Here is the quote:

"First gear, pull away and let the clutch all the way out but try to keep two fingers on the lever, " Some people may feel better with more or less fingers on the lever some may not use the clutch at all. Use what you feel most comfortable with" This is if you want to progress and start changing gear and if you do you will do it all in this little one two step. So you have pulled away clutch out and two fingers on the clutch lever all in one go open the throttle fast enough and wide enough and the bike should pull away really quickly and if you are riding an R1 this should start to wheelie at about 6-7000 RPM* and it will literally jump up very fast so be carefull not to let it go too high too quickly, The Bandit will be the same but the Blade may start to come up around 7000 to 8000rpm and will not wheelie as quickly as the other two. Anyway back to the wheelie. When it comes up you need to change to 2nd gear As it comes off the floor. Wait until it is say 2 feet off the ground, do not try and blip the throttle a few times in first gear this is too aggressive the bike will be a lot easier to control in 2nd gear, ..."

not that i can do this worth a crap, but he is one of the best (or at least best known) stunt riders in the world.

Saturday night I had on my full gear and I was going down a block with plenty of parked cars. I tried to pop one and it came up higher than ever. The gauges weren't quite in my face but they were up there. I didn't panic, let her down easy. Now I can't seem to get it back at that height. It seems that I seem to get 'em higher when there is traffic around. Being that I live in NYC, that's not good.

HOT ROD

I had a friend do the same thing almost...he was use to picking his 01 R1 up in 3rd and accidentally tried in 2nd and gave it too much for second and lost it, took out another one of my buddies in the process.

I think the best way is to clutch it up.

There is two good ways to kinda get the hang of it.

One way >> Start out in 1st gear and shift up to 2nd gear say in 2nd gear. Then with your frist two fingers on your clutch get up to about 45 MPH feather the clutch and gas it to 6500 RMPS all in one quick motion.

Way 2 >> MAKE SURE YOUR IN 6TH GEAR!!! Get up to 55- 60 MPH. Drop down to 2nd gear ( 5th, 4th, 3rd, and 2nd in yout head ) feather the clutch with your frist two fingers and gas it to 6500 RMPS all in one quick motion.

Just keep trying it will come to you!! You should be doing it with-in a few weekends.

I know I said it before BUT BUT BUT BUT!!! >>>NOTE:>>>If your dropping down to 2nd from 6th always check to see that your in 6th NOT 5th. I looped my 99 R1 cause I was in 5th and dropped to 1st!!! When your dropping down to 2nd from 6th just keep an eye on your neutral light and if it dosen't flash you'll be good to go. Also you can also dobble check to see if your in 6th before dropping down to 2nd.

HAVE FUN

hey don't mean to excite anyone... but shouldn't it be pretty easy to tell when you are in second? 7000 rpms @ 65 mph. if you are going 50 mph and are already way high in the RPM range, it should be pretty obvious you are in first.....

Yes it SHOULD be!! but sometimes you can make a mistake. That one mistake could be a bad one too!! But when you have your clutch in goosing the gas you can't tell sometimes. The 99 R1 I Looped shifted VERY smooth with the Harris Rearsets and it was hard to tell if you where in 1st. Guess that's one of the reasons I looped it, huh. I also put a set on my new 02 but you can tell much better when you drope to 1st on the 02. My 99 was allot smoother bike I hate to say.

What I can't get over is how most of you guys are all hung up on clutching wheelies on the R1, a 250 rebel maybe but the R1 has so much snot you don't need to. And hot rod what's whith going to sixth gear and then brining it down to second ?? I'm not trying to start a fight just understand your rational:yesnod

You drop from 6th when your running at 60-70 MPH and you say to yourself hey how about a little wheelie walk'n. :yesnod

Most of you guys on here must have your suspension set somewhat looser than my R1?? Mine is pretty firm and doesn't do good with the 2nd gear bounce type wheelies. But she's BAD ASS in the curves!!! :thumbup
