: Engine bolt threads.. gone
Swedie 02-14-2002, 07:11 AM Damn! I took off the side fairing today to adjust them a little because the previous owner put the fairings back on wrong.
As I just got them off I saw the bolt that olds the engine connected to the sub-frame, HANGING.. loose! So just attempted to screw it in again.. but .. discovered that the treads from the engine .. hole for the bolt was left on the bolt... great
I took a flashlight and tried to look and see what was left and pretty much not a single thread was left. Looks like muched potatoes.
So my question is.. what should I do.. and HOW should I do it?
Mattias1 02-14-2002, 07:18 AM Oh no!
That´s not fixable!
You´re going to have to get a new engine!
Sh*t! It never pays off top buy cheap bikes, they always have nasty surprises in store for you.
Swedie 02-14-2002, 07:20 AM Nah.. that's a bit of an exhaddiration.
What can be done?
Mattias1 02-14-2002, 07:21 AM No, just kidding. Did it make you nervous? Ha ha...
You´ll have to get the engine out of the frame, though, and get some grownup to put in a helicoil thread or similar. More time consuming than expensive, luckliy. You have a lot of time on your hands, right?
Swedie 02-14-2002, 07:23 AM Instead of "wasting" time on that.. I'll put a nut on the other side of the hole and use a longer bolt..
That should do it, right?
scooter 02-14-2002, 07:24 AM Oh man that sucks. The only thing I can think of is tapping a new hole over the existing hole, but then you would need to do that to the engine block. Hmmmmm. Now Im not sure. But I dont think you have a choice if all of the threads are gone. you might want to try retapping the same screw size, if that doesnt work tapp 1 screw size larger. Another thing you can do is get heli-coil inserts. But again you will need to drill a hole into the block. With these you tap a larger hole, then these get screwed in, then your screw gets put into these, then you can use the same screw size spec'd out. Either way you need to retap though.
But Im not a mechanic so Im not too sure. But i dont think re-tapping would be much of an issue.
scooter 02-14-2002, 07:26 AM If you put a nut on the other side make sure you have a lock nut so that it doesnt rattle off from the engine vibration, use locktite also.
Swedie 02-14-2002, 07:29 AM Thanks. I will do that scooter.
I just don't want to take down the whole engine. I just don't wanna.
It should hold up if I just do it correctly.

I've done this exactly once so obviously I'm an expert. Actually it was just last week on a deeply recessed F4 :ugh engine bolt. I'll have nightmares about it for a few years though. You CAN put a Helicoil in it without dropping the engine. You just need to build the right tool. and patience. and a handful of helicoils to **** up till you get it right. It would definitely be easier to get the next size up bolt and drill and tap the hole to accept it. Be sure to get a grade 8 bolt.
Drilling out the threads and putting a nut on the other side might allow the bolt to move in strange and unpredictable ways, upsetting the very fabric of the universe.
If your bike is a '00 - '01 they made some of the engine mount bolts smaller on these. A '98 - '99 bolt might be a perfect size to tap for.
If the bolt is a 10x1.25 I can send you my extra special deep in the hole Helicoil tool. Very trick.
crashfallon 02-14-2002, 11:14 AM little did i know when i bought my used 2001, it was missing a left mount. one day after this long ride i went on, i took the right side apart because i was hearing a high pitched vibration there which was the right mount coming out all the way but stuck against the fairing. i then looked on the left side and saw the void. i had to re-tap both to the same size and i then put frame sliders in instead of the factory bolts for 2 reasons: 1] to protect the bike (which they did in december when i went down) 2] so i could keep an eye on the right one without have to take the fairing off. i lock-tited them and they have been snug as a bug ever since. it was scary though! the engine was actually out of position by a few millimeters and i had to carfully lift it back up to line up the holes:eek:
Swedie 02-14-2002, 11:26 AM Thanks guys. But know what.. after coming home from a few errands in town I found that... I used a 4mm plate together with the bult.
So I took that thing off and fitted the bolt and starting screwing and well.. it worked. I was wrong about all threads being gone. Phew!
I used some superstrong that also has some locktite in it. It should be be strong enough to hold the bolt in place.
I'm so happy for not having to drill or drop the engine out of the frame..
Today I got my fairings to move into place (they were put on wrong and .. you could very much see that!). So I'm happy after.

I don't quite understand
Mattias1 02-14-2002, 12:56 PM There was a 4 mm thick washer on the bolt. He removed the washer and the bolt went in far enough to reach unharmed thread. I think... Swedie?
Swedie 02-14-2002, 01:16 PM like mattias said I think.
this round metallic plate/brick that sits round the bolt.
