06 Battery Removal Help

Hi guys, I picked up my 06 R1 last night from the dealer, man I'm stoked! I started it and ran it from the trailer to the garage (about 50 yards). Came home from work this afternoon and was going to take some pictures of it. I was going to start it to move it and let it get up to running temp (15-20 minutes or so). However, It kept turning over and would occasionally fire, but never keep firing. Needless to say I now have a basically dead battery. Having no idea how charged it was to begin with (probably not charged enough), I went to pull the battery out, but how the heck do you get it out of there? I got the seat off and the long bolt out of the center piece that connects the gas tank, and the 4 bolts off the sides, but the piece doesn't seem to want to come off without removing the rear plastic or perhaps the gas tank. I'm at a loss here, is this really that much of a PITA to pull a battery out? I even thought about jumpstarting it with my truck, but not sure if thats even a feasible option (and wasn't going to just up and try it hehe). I did a search but it didn't bring up much.

Remove the rubber hold down Strap. It will pull right out.

There is nothing else holding the Batt. in.

Originally posted by Wheatman There is nothing else holding the Batt. in. I have that black metal piece unbolted, but it seems it won't come off the top of the battery without removing the whole rear cowl. (plastic seems to be just enough in the way that bending it may crack it to get it removed.)

Just hook a battery charger to it,no use in removing it.And put some gas in it before you try cranking it again....

It has at least 1/2 a tank of gas, I can almost touch it with my finger if I stick it in the tank. Besides wouldn't the low gas light be on if it was really low? Unfortunately there's no power out in the garage to hook one up (thus the removing of it hehe). I found in another thread it's ok to try to jumpstart it with a car, so I tried that. It's got plenty of juice to the battery that way, but still doesn't start. Looks like I'm calling the dealer in the morning.:no :rant

The battery is held down by that bracket. There are four screws (two on each side) that you have to take out. One main allen screw that attaches the bracket to the tank. You dont need to remove the entire rear cowl. Just unscrew the two plastic push screws that hold the rear cowl/fairing, and it should be enough for you to shimmy the bracket out. It (bracket) doesnt come right out but once it's is off, the battery can get pulled right out. Lemme know if that helps. I killed by battery this winter cuz of the effin' alarm. (:dunno ) poor maintenance on my part. Now, I just gotta find a good place on the net that sells that battery. Anyone?

No offense, but if you cant get a battery out of a bike, you shouldn't be riding... Just my opinion... :dunno

I had a hard time getting mine out the first time. I've been riding motorcycles for 20 years. Who knew? I guess I should've thought about hanging it up the moment I couldn't get the battery out in 30 seconds. :no ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now, to get the battery out, get an extra set of hands. Take the two plastic screws out of the cowl closest to the battery. You unscrew them with a screwdriver about 1/4 turn, then pry them out. You can do this by pulling up on the cowl. Now have the extra set of hands pull both sides out just a bit. You'll be able to pull the bracket out by twisting it toward the back of the bike. Now look at the little box just behind the battery. The positive cable goes into it, and it has two fuses on it. Pop that off of the plastic tabs, and pull it out of the way. You may have to pull the two battery cables out of the way, also. Now you can pull the battery out.

That's the closest one to you that I know of. There's also Bristow's up in St. Cloud--right off Highway 10.

If you knew the correct battery, couldn't you get it at a walmart? (Thought they had a big selection of them)

You can get a battery from just about anywhere if you know which one to get... ...to get an oem battery...damn can't htink of the brand name, usually easiest to go to a dealer. Though any dealer, honda or whatever will carry them.

I just searched and found this thread also. I have in the past completely disassembled two bikes down to every bearing, and have been riding for 12 years. I did find it odd that the battery doesn't come right out - looks like I have to loosen a few bolts and brackets on the 06. I just wanted to verify here before I went through all the trouble. Strange, but I guess as bikes get smaller and smaller, sacrifices in ease of maintenance are made. Derek

... Strange, but I guess as bikes get smaller and smaller, sacrifices in ease of maintenance are made. Derek Ya, strange indeed. It's an engineering joke (meaning joke on us). The batt has such a small profile that the slight angle tweak needed for easy removal wouldn't project anything to other components. Sigh.
