Ok, I am currently in contact with the SHOEI corporation for this reason.
April 22nd I purchased a Shoei RF-1000 from a dealer. The helmet is creme-de-la-creme<-- making sure that that is said.
PROBLEM: two small vents on top venting through top of helmet.
REASON: hole is not "screened off"
SITUATION: I was on my way home from work the other day with my helmet on (of course) when I felt something on the top of my head (between my head and helmet). BTW it hurt like hell!! So, I pulled over safely as possible and ripped my helmet off ASAP. Much to my surprise a Bee had flown directly into the vent and that little bastard stung me on the head.
BAD THING: I am allergic to bees and had to call 911 and my wife to come get my bike and take me to the hospitol<-ck sp. I spent 3 hours there to only find out that I am no longer allergic to bees and I "grew out of it". BUT... in hindsite would I have done things different HELL NO, because to swell up and not be able to breath while doing 80 on a motorcycle is BAD:no Not to mention even if it wasn't a bee, who wants a fly/bug buzzing around on top of your head tickling you.
SO, in retrospect and to warn everyone out there with this helmet and i'm sure others like it, do what I did,
I got home and put a small piece of dryer sheet in the holes. This works because
1. It keeps your helmet fresh fully clean
2. It DOES restrict airflow but not drastically
3. Prevents anything from flying in and costing you money/time/sore head:no
I will update everyone on what happens with Shoei, they informed me they would not be able to do a recall due to the fact that it's such a widely used helmet and would involve thousands and thousands of returns. BUT, they are trying to work it to where if someone like me calls and complains I can send it to them to put small screens in the vents.
