Install: Is mildly difficult trying to figure out what wires you need to connect to. I am going to post easy instructions with pictures for anyone who wants to buy this alarm for their 02-03 R1.
What I think: First off, Chatterbox doesn't even know how their alarm works. Their book says when the Alarm is engaged the igntion kill function will be activated. Meaning, you turn the alarm on and the bike won't be able to start. Here's the reality, when the alarm is activated (alarm siren is screaming) that is when the alarm's igntion kill is activated. So you can still start the bike but once the alarm goes off THEN it kills the bike. At least that's how I wired it. I didn't use the wire they said to use. I found a better wire that actually shuts the bike off when the alarm gets set off. Overall, I think the Alarm is pretty cool. It makes a lot of noise, not as much as I thought it was going to though. The lights flash when you engage, disengage or if the alarm system is going off. Also, if you hit button #2 on the remote it makes all 4 blinkers flash simultaneously. Kinda like Hazard flashers. They call it the bike locator function. I think it's cool when showing your buddies your alarm. It DOESN'T have a tilt function. I wish it did.
If your looking for a alarm that's compact, makes your blinkers flash and kills your bike or won't allow the bike to start when the alarm is set off. This is the alarm for you. For around $60.00 bucks you can't beat the price and it's a fun little weekend project. After completion I felt closer to my R1. It was an intimate experience for the both of us.
Let's get into the install of this Alarm:
I mounted the BRAIN inside of my tail section. I mounted it to the sub frame with zip ties. You want the brain to be nice and snug to the subframe. Remember, this alarm is activated by "shock" or "Bumping" the bike. Here's a photo of where I mounted it.
The tail section slips over the alarm brain with ease.
Second part of install:
You have a RED WIRE and a BLACK wire. The Red wire goes to the positive terminal of the battery, the Black goes to the negative terminal of the battery. No pictures for this, I figured we'd all know how to do this.
There is also a White wire, the white wire is the antenna. It doesn't hook up to anything. It just goes wherever you want it to go. Again, no picture of this.
Now the Alarm will have 2 Yellow wires and 2 blue wires. I have covered all the wires for this alarm. Let's talk about the 2 yellow wires.
2 yellow wires are for the flashing lights. One yellow wire is for the rear blinkers and the other yellow wire is for the front blinkers. On the 2002 R1 I basically cut the blinker wire and spliced the yellow wire into that line I cut. I used bullet connectors for this portion. You will splice a into the BROWN with GREEN markings wire, and the GREEN wire. The wires are located at the 2 oclock position if the GAS TANK represents 6 oclock. Here's a picture:
Here's the final portion of the install.
The 2 Blue wires represent the ignition kill. Now remember this function only works when the alarm is going off (the siren is screaming)
The OEM red wire is disconnected from the White housing (see picture) OEM red wire is then connected to BLUE WIRE #1 which goes into the alarm system. Blue wire #2 (from the alarm system)is then connected into the white housing where the OEM red wire was plugged in, to complete the circuit.
If you own a 2002 R1 and you are planning on buying this alarm, PLEASE use the pictures to help yourself out. I'm telling you, I spent HOURS trying to figure out what wires to use. Figuring out what wires to use is by far the hardest part of this install. But I have posted pictures for anyone to use. Now that I know what wires to use I could install this alarm in about 30 minutes. I hope this information helps at least 1 person. If you have any questions about this alarm PLEASE EMAIL me at TS02R1@msn.com

AraiR1 10-16-2002, 08:22 PM Great info.....Thanks for the detail......:fact
Quasimojo 10-16-2002, 08:38 PM Got mine for $49 from KEN'S CYCLE CENTER
GRAY, TN 423-477-8596 ask for Craig.
I didn't hook up all the ignition or the lights. I just wanted/needed something to scare the kiddies when they think that it's OK to climb on the bike. Works great! I would recommend the alarm to anyone. The alarm unit is too cheap not to have installed!
scottb 10-16-2002, 08:48 PM Do you figure it will work for an '01 just as well?
Thanks, Scott
NY2NJ 10-16-2002, 08:55 PM Once again. Another great review. Thanks.
Scottb,
I guarantee that it will work for your 01 R1. I only put emphasis on the 2002 R1 because that's the exact bike that I have. The wiring could be different since the 01 R1 isn't fuel injected. The Signal wires could possibly be the same but I don't know about the ignition wire.
NY2NJ,
I always look forward to your kind words. I was actually going to PM you to let you know I did this review but I figured you would find it somehow! You always do.
Quasimojo,
You got a good deal. Chatterbox actually sells those alarms to dealers for $37.95. I won't tell you how I know that, I just do. I paid $50.00 plus $5 bucks for shipping. I think I got a GREAT deal. But like I stated in my review, I had a small credit coming. But hey, now if you wanna hook up your lights and ignition you can!!! The flashing lights are kick ass and I think it's a great feature so people actually know who's alarm is going off.
Arai929rr,
Didn't want to leave you out, Thanks for the words of encouragement.
BRBJackson 10-17-2002, 10:17 AM As always, Todd, a GREAT review. You're one of the guys that makes this site so valuable :thumbup
DChan415 10-17-2002, 10:31 AM I've had nothing but trouble with the chatterbox alarm. I've gone through 3 of them on 2 different bikes. And the current one I have is starting to act crazy too. The last 3 I had all burned out at the solder connection in the circuit board where the positive red wire goes into it. I'm gonna try a different alarm next time. Let me know how long your chatterbox lasts...
Buster Bennett 02-13-2003, 05:36 PM "One yellow wire is for the rear blinkers and the other yellow wire is for the front blinkers."
Actually....... Its one yellow wire for the RIGHT turn signals and the other for the LEFT. If they had the fronts on a common circuit you would never have a left turn right turn signal, hence they would be common and flash together.
:lol :p
Sorry man, just had to make sure the correct info was out there.
BTW, I just installed mine, and can you believe the freaking thing does not work!!! ARGH!!!!
Well, it works, but the siren sounds like 1 screaming ant. I literally have to put my ear up to the brain box to hear it. Other than that, it works perfectly! hahaha
I emailed chatterbox, will see what happens

any idea about the wire colours for a 99 r1?
Still Learnin 11-05-2006, 11:52 PM Hey Todd,
Just wanted to say give you a BIG THANK YOU :)
This is my first post - I searched everywhere to try and make fitting this alarm a little easier for myself.....you helped a lot. You're a LEGEND!!
Just two minor issues:
1. My alarm is very similar to the above alarm...except I have one extra wire that the instructions tells me I need to be connect to "engine lock (+)".....does anyone know what that is? I know that Todd mentioned it in his first post....so do I just leave it and not connect it to anything?
2. I orignally had a trickle charger set up on the my bike (still do!!) that did "it's thing"....what I am finding now is that it remains charging...by that I mean it used to flash (depending on the battery strength)...now the charger remains lit...as if the battery is completly dead...any ideas anyone?
Maybe the wire (that I have not connected to anything) is the problem that I have with the trickle charger?
Cheers, Scott
Still Learnin 11-06-2006, 01:16 AM Hi all,
It would seem that I have been a little anxious and/or impatient....
The trickle charger is now working just fine.....blinking away as it should. My wife seems to think that either I was a little eager to post my first message on this board....or she mentioned that it may have been the 5 or 6 beers I had during the course of the day in setting up the alarm (or to get out of household chores)..
Either way...Todd (again thankyou!!) appreciate the time you spent on this. I have mate that is interested in the alarm....I am now an "expert"...so I will be right to fit his now! For $69.00 Aussie dollars.....it is well worth the investment.
Cheers, Scott
frankgps 05-12-2009, 07:29 AM Hi, I read your thread on the installation of an alarm system on your 2002 yamaha r1.
I have a yamaha r1 2002 too, and I'm trying to install an alarm system (SPY 5000) with remote engine start and anti-hijacking mode during running.
I have a problem because I'm not sure where to connect the wire for the remote engine start and the wires for the anti-hijacking mode.
I have to use a relay?
Can you help me?
Thanks a lot

Unfortunately I did this install nearly 6 1/2 years ago and I also I haven't had my R1 for almost 4 years. Sorry I can't help you with this.
Good luck.
