rspec7 10-22-2002, 09:15 PM Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and relatively new to riding...I've been riding for only about 6 months now.
Does anyone have any advice on waving to other bikers? How come some riders wave and some don't? What if you're riding on the freeway and you pass up another biker? And whats the deal w/ harley riders...they NEVER wave back! I'm pretty confused. Please help me out...:crash
rktspd 10-22-2002, 09:22 PM welcome to the addiction!!! i usually don't worry about other riders. i waive to ALL sportbike riders regardless if they waive back or not. harleys on the other hand...are a whole new breed. i don't bother with them, but if they waive, i'll waive back.:hellobye
PurdueR1 10-22-2002, 09:28 PM I wave at everyone if they are on a bike. Harley riders won't wave at sportbikes because they think we are a bunch of punks, but if you start waving to them, it may help everyone realize that everyone rides for the love of being on two wheels. If found the people that wave the least around me are the Goldwingers. Harley riders around my neck of the woods tend to wave to me most of the time.
dingus 10-22-2002, 09:31 PM harley riders dont wave because they are pissed off. Mad that they spent twice as much for a bike that can do half as much. :hellobye
R1Fanatic 10-22-2002, 09:35 PM Welcome to the addiction bro!
As for waving when you are on the freeway, don't. Focus on paying attention to the cagers around you and the dangers of the road. But, I at least give a quick "nod" of the head when I am on the freeway.
Frankly, too many Harley-Cruiser type riders have pissed me off to the point where I don't even bother waving at them anymore. For some reason, they don't wave back, and I have even had a few who gave me dirty looks? Yeah, sounds strange, but it happens. Here it is I am trying to be nice to a fellow "rider", and they don't give any respect in return. So, **** 'em:finger
Again, welcome to the forum, and don't be surprised if you spend hours upon hours reading and posting on here. There is a great group of guys on here, and very interesting topics!!

pacman 10-23-2002, 03:31 AM This reminds me, do you guys Warn-a-Brother?
We have this thing here, when you see a cop car/on foot/etc you put your hand up and tap your helmet a few times, kind of slapping it softly on top. This tells anyone behind/around who hasn't noticed the police to slow down etc.. Usally they'll Warn-a-Brother for the guys behind them and so on.
IU've probably been saved a few times, coming around that corner at a little fast, only to see the guy at the front of the pack tap, then the guy bhind him.. me.. etc.

R1DER 10-23-2002, 04:53 AM Over here we do a sort of NOD to each other, 9 sport bike riders out of 10 do it......
you kind of NOD your head forward and slghtly to the side, better than taking a hand of the bars if you're on a hot one....
So here a nod to you and welcome to the best bike board on the planet....:rock

Absolutely!!! But I usually point one finger up in the air and make a swirling motion to indicate that a cop is in the direction that they are traveling. I guess that this is supposed to symbolize the flashing lights on top of a cruiser.
I was not aware of the helmet tapping motion. Are there any others to indicate the 5O is around the corner?
Rota r1 10-23-2002, 05:07 AM Welcome to the forum,
Dude I wave to everyone Most Harley riders dont wave Because they "don't like rice" The have that out law image to perserve, even though the only people who can afford those bikes are doctors and lawyers and the like on second thought they are all criminals lol. **** it have fun. :rock
pacman 10-23-2002, 05:26 AM Hehe.
We all do the nod too, I hate it when others dont nod back.
Well, for those of you who never knew, I hereby start the "Warn-a-Brother R1-Forums Act" ... All learn it, it's an obvious gesture that can't be mistaken, and works well if everyone does it.
:thumbup
oREVwa 10-23-2002, 05:29 AM First, rspec7, welcome to the forum. Tons of useful information here. Like the Warn-A-Brother system. Thanks for that tip, Pacman. I am getting a new tire on today, and I am sure I will need to be warned here shortly.:jump
Super Dave 10-23-2002, 07:07 AM I seldom ride on the street myself anymore.
But I always liked to wave or acknowledge other riders.
Yes, unfortunately, some Harley riders don't wave. Some do. The ones that don't, I'm generalizing, are the YUBBIE's (young urban biker types) that bought their Harley for resale rather than the ride. They might put on a few hundred miles a year, but ultimately, they are poor RIDERS and are accident prone. They think that their ride works like their wonderful new, characterless Acura: turn right, go right.
The real hardcore Harley-Davidson riders are generous, respectful riders that enjoy MOTORCYCLING and bikes. Their choice happens to be the Bar and Shield rather than Tuning Forks or the Wing, etc.
I had a girl friend who's father was a member of the "Son's of Silence". Pretty hard core guy. We watched a Grand Prix together on TV and he let me ride his bike. Sure it shifted like an old Ford pick up with a three on the tree, but I was riding, and I enjoyed it.
Anyway, I wave went I can, not taking too much attention away from what I'm doing.
CMRRA13 10-23-2002, 07:37 AM Welcome to the addiction rspec7. I've been addicted for over 20 years and there's no turning back.
I wave or nod to all sportbike riders or anyone who waves to me.
My group have certain hand signals to warn each other of danger. Waving you hand downward like petting a dog means slow down, usually there's a cop. Pointing a finger upward and swirling mean 50 in the air. While carving the canyons, either pointing to the ground at rocks or putting a leg out to the side there's a rock on the ground. A thumbs up :thumbup to riders coming the other direction means we have NOT seen any cops. Thumb down means there's a cop we just seen.
I wish there was a universal hand signal system so we could all understand them and help each other.
If I was to see pacman taping his helmet I would have wonder what's he doing. But now I know what it means.
bpa00 10-23-2002, 07:49 AM I wave to all other riders no matter what they ride. If they don't wave back, then that just makes them the dick head. Why should I lower myself to their level by not waiving? I even wave to motorcycle cops, and they usually wave back.
I also try to wave to cops and hot chicks. If the cop pulls you over, just say "I know sport riders get a bad rap with the police, and I just like to show we are not all that bad". I've never had that happen, but I have heard of it. It doesn't help to be a dick head in the situation. On the other hand, if the hot chicks pull you over, then more power to you.
Actually waving to cops is debatable, but other motorcyclists and hot chicks is required.
- BA
MegatronR1 10-23-2002, 07:58 AM I wave to every rider who goes by, no matter what they ride.. if they don't wave back, oh well.. most people wave back though if you take the initiative to wave first..

:iamwithst , and I am through waving at Harley riders. I have also noticed that people on Ninja 250's and 500's usually don't wave back either...maybe an inferiority complex?
brianb 10-23-2002, 08:22 AM Yeah when the leaders see the police they tap the top of their helmet with their hand.
When riding with a group, espically on the highway, we ususally stick the leg of the direction we are going out when changing lanes instead of using a signal, or both. This is more noticable to the riders behind and on the side.
winders 10-23-2002, 08:35 AM My group uses the leg off the peg to indicate there is some object on the road to avoid. The leg used tells you what side it is on.
Using the arms to indicate turn direction, as the law outlines, seems to work very well.

rspec7 10-23-2002, 09:06 AM Thanks for the warm welcome and the great responses everybody. So much wisdom here! This forum ROCKS! :rock
and I'll try to wave at ALL bikers once I get comfortable enough. I still don't know about those harley guys tho...
Are there "universal" hand signals for things other than the helmet tap forwarning of cops? I've seen bikers in packs do other things like point to the ground. What does that mean? This is like a whole other language!
bpa00 10-23-2002, 09:13 AM Po'ed:
Ag Surfer 10-23-2002, 09:17 AM i used to wave but since acquiring my ONE; i find it much more appropriate to just point straight out with ONE finger (like the NBA pros do when they receive a good pass from a teamate).
i think we should make this the universal (or at least worldwide) R1 "wave".
just my thoughts....
and i wasnt talking about this finger :finger
Limited R1 10-23-2002, 06:52 PM I'll wave to all bikes Fu*k them if they don't wave back. And yes always use signals to warn other bikes of danger.
Tap on top of helment = COP
Leg out = debris in the road that side
Hand signals = which way your turning
Pointing straight up = My front tire is going to levitate in a second.

HATEKILLDESTROY 10-23-2002, 07:04 PM I ride around with my parents on occasion. They have a harley, and i have my 'plastic bike' as my father calls it. If I'm in a lead and another harley is passing, They completely ignore me and wave to my parents on the harley. And vice versa. Another sport bike will wave to me and ignore the harley:) Its amusing. I myself tend to wave to skinny white girls. Cheers matey
pacman 10-24-2002, 01:11 AM It's just one of those things. Some people ride a harley, and sport beards. The rest of us like to be able to go faster than god. :)
I dont wave, I nod
rspec7 10-24-2002, 10:06 PM Today I was at a light, and this guy and his girlfriend pop their heads out of their car window and were telling me to pop a wheelie so they could take a picture. Of course I didn't because I CAN'T yet  Every once in awhile people do that hand signal like to pop a wheelie. I feel kind of like an animal being told to do a trick for thier enjoyment. How do you guys react to that?

I know exactly what you mean. My brother and I were riding in downtown St. Louis one night after a Rams game. There was a car full of older guys yelling out of the window and making gestures for us to "race". It got my brother pretty excited, and when the light turned green, he took off!! I started to get on the gas, but I started to think, "**** them, they are not paying me. And if they want to go fast or race, they should buy their own damn bike". Who knows, maybe I was just in a bad mood that day. :lol I also get people constantly asking me to do wheelies, or my favorite, "tricks"

It depends on how hot she is! :finger
I don't know about you guys but I only pull a wheelie for hot girls and kids. Obviously, a nice panty juicing wheelie for a chick never hurt. Also, kids get so excited when you pull a wheelie past the minivan. I get a kick out of that.:lol :lol

either that or they are too scared to let go of the death grip :lol

bobjonez 10-25-2002, 08:00 PM if you're riding on two wheels (or one) and you're not on a bicycle, moped, or scooter, then you'll get a wave from me.

rspec7 10-28-2002, 10:11 PM Got this from another forum:
was out today and came up on a group of about 20 harleys. the speed limit was 35mph but most bikes (including the harleys) could go much faster (they weren't, road was smooth flowing corners). it would of been impossible to pass them all at once, so if i had tried i would of had to be right in the middle of their group. anyway, i held back and just followed them for a while until they reached the bar they were headed to, which is just across from the bakery i was headed to. it was funny, about 60 harleys at the bar, and all the other bikes (BMW's, R1's, triumphs....) across the street at the bakery. i've been told (and maybe this is being to general) that harley riders get pissed if you ride between them. just curious, what would you do?
what would you guys do??
i've been stuck behind a couple harley riders before and they are soooooooooo sloooooow! usually they let me pass though. but i've NEVER been stuck behind a PACK.

Usually I pull a wheelie while passing the entire group (if possible). If it is a large group and the wheelie zone is short. I will pass to the midpoint on two wheels. Then pass the rest out on one wheel.
I think that most riders (in general) like safe wheelies. A lot of the time the Harley riders give me the thumbs up. If they don't like it then **** them if they can't take a joke.:finger
I wave to everyone (sometimes those mopeds with the two headlights that fool ya at knight too). If they dont wave back, who cares? I cant say I have waved everytime. Sometimes your shifting or breaking or just checking out there bike (or copilot) and just cant. And if someone wants a trick, I just laugh and go on with my life. I also use the pat down low (pat the dog) to warn others. It works, and ive seen it too.:thumbup
P.S. Im with ya on that Goldwing stuff:(
Here in NY alot of guys (surprinsingly) are trying to promote good harley/sportbike relations - I wave to everyone, 99% of the time I get a wave back from the sportbike guys, though some of them are too oblivious (meaning they're squids and are too busy thinking about how to shift to look around). Believe it or not, I get a wave back from the Harley folks more than half the time - and it is getting better.
Rspeedemon1 11-15-2002, 10:45 AM Harley riders don't return the wave because they think they are superior to the young punks on the cafe style racers. What they should understand is that they are actually driving a bike that is out classed and performed in every way. Also most Harley payments are even larger than the owners trailer payment. As far as I'm concerned don't wave to umm they arn't on real motorcycles.

:lol :lol They're probably so new they're afraid to take their hands off the bars. Welcome rspec7, I worked at an American Made motorcycle shop (Big Dog's, Indians and Harleys) for a while and I have found that it's the RUBs (Rich Urban Bikers) that don't wave. We had a Bandit 1200S in the shop, took it in trade on a sportster, and one of our mechanics, die hard harley guy, (he BUILT his first harley from a couple totaled bikes) said that he wouldn't mind having the Bandit as a second bike seeing how it was faster and handled better than his brand new Night Train. The real Harley guys will usually wave.

beaulauber 11-15-2002, 01:13 PM I Wave to all riders. If they don't wave back i don't get all mad.... I sometimes dont wave back. If i don't see the rider or something.
I use arm signals when turing. It helps out tremendously when in groups or with cagers behind you. You stand out a lot more. Try to make a habit out of it. I do it 50% of the time when alone and 100% of the time when riding with 1 or more people.....:hellobye

;)
kingnba6 08-21-2011, 07:33 PM post whore !
as long as we are two or three wheels, it means we all like the same thing, just with differing methods of implementation. And besides, the next scooter rider you see may be a struggling college student or broke new parent trying to make ends meet but still trying to enjoy two wheel with the desire to ride next to you in a few years on a bigger bike. i started on a 250 went to a 750 sport touring to a 250 ninja to a 750 cruiser to a 900 cruiser to a 1000 supersport. we all want to be "free and different"
Chillwater 08-22-2011, 03:22 AM This reminds me, do you guys Warn-a-Brother?

I'm really glad to hear it when other people use this system as well. I tap my helmet for other riders when I know there are cops around every time.
I have personally had my ass saved by other riders tapping there helmet several times and I can't express how much I appreciate it when other riders give me the helmet tap. This gesture has saved me from what could have been some serious encounters with the law.
I'm currently in NC and some riders here do the helmet tap, but I love the sport riding style in SoCal. When I'm riding the canyons in socal i'm not looked at like a fool when I'm wearing full leathers no matter how hot it is because the majority of riders are in full gear as well, and that to me is refreshing. I notice a lot more of the helmet tapping in cali than in NC.
I always wave to any sportbike/supermoto/street fighter/dual sport/tourer etc.. However I never wave to Harleys unless i'm in an unusually good mood because those pricks just piss me off every time when they act like they're too good to return a simple wave. If a harley rider waves to me i'll wave back, but that's it.
BTW I love the name for the helmet tap, "warn-a-brother" lol. I've never heard it called that but I'm gonna use that name for it from now on

I think waving to another rider out there doing the same thing as me is just acknowledging we are both taking the same risks for the love of riding. Cars are just a means of transportation so I don't see that as the same type of thing.
I can see what you mean about it being gay though, sometimes I think to myself "why am I waving to someone who for all I know could be a total shit head in reality?" I still do it though.

Here in the US i'll always throw a wave out unless i'm haulin ass mid corner then i'll give a nod if it's unsafe to take a hand off the grip
:stpd: not only hard to see but letting off the throttle:scared who likes to do that just to wave. UNLESS throttle is on the left side :hammer: J/K it know its not. US i would assume we throw a wave for the reason i stated cus the throttle is on the opposite side that we wave from. :flex:
DipItandGripIt 08-22-2011, 09:39 AM ye those things are kinda dangerous lol
I just saw it at the top, I never look at the dates. But yea 9 years old is pretty bad :hammer:
i concur, sooo carry on everyone
Phunkzilla 08-22-2011, 10:35 AM I was taught in my ride class that patting the top of your helmet ("bubble gum machine") was kind of the universal signal for police. The signal is the universal sign to let approaching riders know that their brights were on but on the down low to let riders know a cop is ahead. Apparently in AZ its against the law to let people know that a cop is ahead.

I dont think its a specific law that is falls under but knowing several police officers they can find something to ticket you for (Obstruction of Justice?). And being pulled over in Phoenix and in Tucson, both cities have their jackhole share of law enforcement officers. So the idea of the tapping the helmet is that the other rider had their highbeams on, not that I was warning them of a speedtrap.
LudjakR1 08-22-2011, 11:12 AM I never waive to harley riders i turn my head, to sportbikes yes i do. I do like when harley rider waves at me but i dont wave back :)

ok now i get it. yea and especially if you breath wrong and get pulled over by a bike cop NO MERCY! i love how in tucson they pull you over just to tell you nice bike etc blah blah when we all know what there really doing. Now border patrol is the shit they actually will post up and watch you ride those roads where cops dont have any jurisdiction. thanks for explaining

I had a PHX moto cop pull up to me on the I-10 during rush hour to tell me that if he wasnt on his way home that he would pull me over and give me a ticket for where my license plate is mounted. Then he passed me. Gave me attitude just so he didnt have to ride behind me in 10mph traffic. I understand that police officer deals with a lot of sh!t through out his day but to try and intimidate me so you dont have to ride behind in stop and go traffic was just ridiculous.
Phunkzilla 08-22-2011, 12:09 PM But I do wave at other riders. Unless they are on a scooter. Then I laugh a little on the inside.
DipItandGripIt 08-22-2011, 12:15 PM i always find it funny when i was in panama city beach fl for spring break when i lived there and i would roll down the strip with 15 bikes and the spring breakers would roll up beside us trying to do wheelies and stuff we would all just laugh and they try to join the pack lol bad idea...my foot may slip
