yamahog 11-05-2006, 01:55 PM I am familiar with the Suzuki 400SM, but what other super-motos, especially 450+, are currently street legal? I have read alot about people converting bikes and registering them, but here in FL, this is a next to impossible option.

Get up with Chad..... him and I have been working on that since he learned he was getting one last week.
yamahog 11-05-2006, 03:17 PM It kills me when I read the stories of guys in other states, doing a couple of mods, passing an inspection, and being legal. I looked into making a banshee street legal, after I read an article some time ago about it being done in CA. After many calls and a lot of research I concluded that if the original title stated "off road use only" it wasn't happening in FL. I explained this to a fellow member Outlaw, when he was trying to legalize at WR250, and in the end he gave up.
I have checked the KTM's online and a lot of them seem to be quirky, and the decent ones seem to be impossible to get your hands on. Maybe chad will chime in. When I seen him post that he was getting a Yamaha supermoto I immediately searched to see if my prayers were answered, but I did not see anything street legal from the factory :(

Yeah i was looking into the DMV laws here in NC to see if they were easier to skirt around....... but so far its a no go.
Gawarrior 11-06-2006, 08:17 AM Yamahog...right now the only street legal full motards are the Husky SMR's and the Aprilia SXV's.
KTM exc's come street legal in 07 but have to be converted to supermoto.
Now, as far as getting any 450 street legal...it can be done. But not by conventional methods. I can guaruntee you that there are street legal 450 motards on Florida. Actually over on SupermotoJunkie Forum I know of a couple. The main thing you have to get around in the MSO that has "off road Use only" and get a real title. Some states all you have to do is get it inspected and they give you a form to fill out and signed by the inspector saying it is street legal and you take that to the tag office and get a title and tag...you are set.
problem is that the state will sometimes give you the run around on getting the inspection and how to go about doing it.
Stay tuned to this forum...I am going to get my 06 yz450 supermotard street legal. Once I do I will post up the method I used.
yamahog 11-06-2006, 08:40 AM Cool, Keep us posted :bow
ducatiwv 11-06-2006, 09:22 AM Actually I have the 400sm Suzuki and with a few mods its really pretty good, I put a jet kit, Full Exhaust and did some airbox mods to it, and it really woke it up, the bike already handles very good, and is super thin, I have a yz450 and it feels as thin and light as that bike actually, so its not a bad choice for the price. You can find them for around 4500 new, and thats pretty cheap when, and the mods dont cost much more than 500 total.

I dont think you have enough bikes Larry!!!!!!!!!
yamahog 11-06-2006, 09:28 AM I have heard similar things about the SM, something about switching out the restrictive street carb for the off road carb, an air box mod, and a new exhaust, is supposed to transform it into an entirely different machine :dunno

Its true...To be honest, SM's arent that fast on the street anyway, and if you are not going to race, then the 400SM will be fast enough, and in the twisties top speed doesnt matter anyway, It really is a great bike for the money IMO...

Trust me...the Suzuki DR is never going to come close to any of the new 450 supermoto's. The new 450's are right at 50 rwhp stock...I think the DR is in the 30's, lol. BUT, the DR is street legal and probably much better if you are cruising around town and the street. The 450's are race bikes...fun in short spurts on the street. But I know you know all that.

400SM. 4500
YZ450 6900-7000

You could look for a used Yz450, maybe get a deal like Chad, he really got a good deal on that used 450, especially considering he got the Mx wheels too..
yamahog 11-06-2006, 07:34 PM Yes but the problem is I have a 16 and a 17 year old so everything has to be times 2 :lol Thank god I already hit the Louis Vouitton store and got the wife and daughter out of the way. The friendly sales associate was kind enough to call me and tell that all prices were going up as of 11/01. I checked after on 11/02 just to make sure she wasn't bs'ing :sneaky
Gawarrior 11-06-2006, 08:11 PM So, I went to the local Tag office today...I think I made them mad:sing:
I tell you what...talking to them is like talking to a 6 year old. Seriously...just simple questions but if it isn't their cookie cutter case like they hear 1000 times a day then it is like you asked them to explain the meaning of life:lol Anyway, after talking with the supervisor I actually got some leads.
Basically, if you are the first owner of a bike and your name in on the MSO then you are at least one step ahead of the game. In Georgia you can't get a title if you are not the original owner on the MSO. But, if you are the original owner, then what you do is get the form to get an inspection. You get it inspected by "an officer of the law" and get him to sign the sheet. Then you take it back to the tag office with that stuff and they give you a title and tag.
The thing is, the wonderful :bs people at the Tag office may not make it that clear for you or answer the questions to help you get it done. Most likely they will say "if it says offroad only then we don't give titles for those". trust me, I heard that today...basically they are saying..."we are too lazy to try and help you out" At least that is what I found to be the case. You could possibly find someone helpful, but dont' count on it.
So, just ask them for the forms to get the bike inspected. Then if you know a cop, get them to inspect it and sign the papers. Then take those back and get your tag and title.
Now, if you aren't the original owner then either the original owner has to title the bike or you can get a Power of Attorney form so that you can get the title in their name, then transfer it over. That is what I may be looking at.
Right now I am still waiting on the MSO, but I got an email today from the owner that it actually has a Ohio Certificate of Title...but with Offroad use only on it. THat is good because a title is a title and it can be transferred to my name and then I can get it inspected and then roll!!!
As for what is required to pass inspection...not sure on that. Probalby the obvious stuff. In Ga, if you don't know someone to do it then you can pay 160 bucks and they will come to your house and inspect it.
Hope that helps some. when I do end up getting my title then I will post up to confirm exactly what i did to get it.
yamahog 11-06-2006, 08:19 PM That all makes sense, but I believe it may be harder here in FL. Some reseach has shown that there are those who have pulled it off, but it seems as if they simply got lucky. For several years FL bikes have been titled, this includes dirt bikes and quads. Our problems seem to stem from the inspection process.
Outlaw, had a speedo, lights, DOT tires, blinkers you name it. The inspection went fine, however when the VIN and title showed off road use only he was dead in the water. The inspector said the inspection did not matter, the vehicle could not get a plate. He could register it as an off road vehicle which is now required here :dunno This is why I think I would need to go street legal from the get go :(

hmmm, i got you. What they said here in Ga, once you get a title then you are set. the problem is that most, if not all dirtibikes only have mso's and not titles. and once you get it signed off as being street worthy, and get a title that the state is fine with it. I can't really say for sure until I have finished the process, but that is what everyone in the offices are telling me.
There is another way you could probably get it done. There is a title company in texas that you can pay to get it fixed right and get a legit texas title. Then you just transfer it to florida title. but it costs a little money. If you get to that point where you want to do it, let me know. I may end up doing that as a last resort.
I wonder if the states are trying to crackdown on this stuff or just are not organized enough to actually determine a bike that has been converted to a legit streetbike. I am guessing it is the latter.

It has the headlights and taillight, but no turnsignals, which I am pretty sure is not required by the most recent Florida Statute I read. (If the outer sides of the vehicle is less than 24 inches from the steering stem, turn signals are not required) I was thinking about getting it to replace my stolen 04 R1, but I'm not so sure yet. Another Member posted the ad in the Miami section, but I questions a lot about the bike. First it makes no mention of a speedo, second he says the plate is up under the fender, but the pics did not show that, and 3rd he says he is getting rid of it to get a DR400SM, which I think is real weird unless, you cannot get a plate for the 450 and therefore want a 400 :sneaky :dunno
RavmanR1 11-07-2006, 04:39 PM at the stealer where i bought my R1 they are selling wr250's and 450's with the street legal kit on them. you would have to get the motard goodies for it. i know that this would not be worth the trip for any of you guys down south but there are dealers doing it. maybe maine is more relaxed on issueing titles. i really don't know.

hahahahaha, sounds to me ned like you need to come down to barnesville Ga next weekend. :riding Sunday the 19th we are having another trackday down there! Get you some fo fiddy action:sing:
btw, when it is all said and done I am going to drive my bike to dairy queen and get a picture of me eating a nice big fat blizzard with the bike out front!:hammer: lol
ZRider 11-07-2006, 07:07 PM Hmmm.....each 7lbs added to a bikes gross weight is equal to a 1HP decrease to the rear wheel. Keep on eating those blizzards and you'll need more than 40 to the rear wheel:confused: big boy.
Guess its about time for a DQ trip out West. I was talking with my brother about an hour ago. Colorado to Phoenix is a days ride from his place. Then West to Cali and South to Cabo San Lucas :bandit ........hmm.
Get out of the way boys:horse: there's some motos coming through.
Here's my wheels......oh........this thread has been jacked.

2weelz 11-09-2006, 07:58 AM Another Member posted the ad in the Miami section, but I questions a lot about the bike.
The YZ450 is mine. I posted all over Craigslist for sale. This bike is bare bones with the least amount of "crap" on it as possible. I like the dirt bike look-a-likes. Just like the Craigslist ad reads, it has a FL street title and can be registered at any tag agency in FL. Of course, other states will have to get the VIN verified by the DMV. There is no speedo. I don't need one. It's just an around the town bike. I just go with the flow of traffic. No rocket science here. The plate is, indeed, under the fender. I am getting the DRZ400SM because it's a more commuter friendly bike. It's a factory SM so it will handle constant speeds and requires less maintenance. It's built for the street. The YZ is a factory motocross bike which would require a hell of a lot of maintenance if you were to ride it 70 mph everywhere. I'll be sacrificing 20hp for the DRZ so it means no more power wheelies and a lot less fun overall. My ph no is in all my ads. Any serious buyer can call me. Please don't waste my time if don't have any $$$. Check out my tag biotches...
