Ok I have searched the the forum and it seems this has occurred to a few members but I am unable to find the solution. I have had some seepage running down the left cover under the starter. When I started to trace this I have ended up at the middle of the bike by the starter. Is there a seal here that could leak, does anyone know what may be leaking I dont want to carry on stripping the bike unnecessarily. This is not a big leak but it is getting worse with running the bike warm in traffic and I dont want to damage anything.

You don't need to open a 2nd thread on the same topic. i have that problem, I am getting a new gasket for the stator cover. I had the magneto and regulator/rectifier replaced and I guess they didn't do a good job.

My leak is not coming from the cover seal it seems to be coming from futher to the middel of the motor closer to the starter, and is running down the side by the cover. Are you talking about seal nymber 4 by the stator? Would oil leak out if the o-ring on the starter number 4 was leaking?

my stator was the last thing replaced before the leak started so I'm having that replaced soon.

Well here is the problem, all the seals in my starter motor were toast, everything was coverd in oil and grit. very glad it was not the head gasket.

No Idea all the seals have gone hard and flat, bike has been giveing probelms starting and overheating in summer traffic.

Sorry about the pictures they were taken with a crap cell phone. The shot of the left side the red is where I thought the oil came from. The blue is where I traced it to which ment I had to take everything off from the top to try trace it futher the last to shots are of the starter itself before I took it out. When your bike was lowsided which side did it fall on? Some nob knocked over my bike onto the left side and it was on its side for a few hours most likely. During that time perhaps the oil leaked passed the front seal (Which was hard and flat by that time from age or heat) and got into the stater and of course gunked everything up inside untill such a time that the bike would not start and I had already been through one new battery.

Luma, the bike had been low sided on the left side, and there are very faint light scratches on the cover that you have marked in red... That is where I thought the leak was coming from, but now upon further inspection I see it is coming from above there inbetween the engine... The bike was on its side for no more than 10 min. Suspect lowsided, picked it up and took off down a side street, dumping it in someones front yard and took off running through the woods... Police were in pursuit, followed him. found it and picked it up to finger print it...

I'm going to take my bike to a mechanic to let him look at the leak to try and fix it. What should I tell him to look at?

I have had the same leakage at my previous bike (04 model). It was the O-ring from the starter engine that was toast.

I have the same problem, too. Why would this cause the engine to run hotter than normal, though? Mine is running very hot. I am just wondering if replacing these o-rings will fix the bike running so hot. I would hate to put it all back together and it still run hot. Anybody know? :dunno

mine is doing it as well. thought it was valve cover, as i have had it leak in middle when i had it off with motor in and didnt get gasket all way on.. didnt find out till i had all bike back together and put it on stand.. then it puddled on ground.. but now i have it leaking and i suppose its from starter like yours. its not much.. like drop every time i put it on sidestand..so it can wait till winter.

I started a topic on this back in 05 too. My bike did this brand new. Turns out the seal was nicked in my case. I replaced it and the leak stopped. As far as this being related to overheating issues, I doubt it. If yours is leaking the seal is toast.

I have yet to take care of this problem on mine. I need to get the tps replaced under warranty and then I will check on this o ring...

All fixed. replacing those 3 o-rings did the job. Starts perfectly and no more small oil leak. Also, cleaned the throttle bodies, changed the clutch & throttle cable, spark plugs, cleaned the coils, cleaned the air filter, changed the oil, flushed the radiator, installed my angel eyes, installed a switch and relay for all of the lights, and did the garage door opener on the high beams mod, while I was in there. :flex: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/frontsidebusproductions/Bikes/My%20Bike/My%20Wreck/P2281018.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/frontsidebusproductions/Bikes/My%20Bike/P3101041copy.jpg
