Gawarrior 01-04-2007, 08:46 AM I wanted to get a good idea of who all is going to do some dirtbiking with us at the Convention in June. Plimmer found us a heck of a good place to go at least one day..maybe more. www.shilohmxpark.com (http://www.shilohmxpark.com) This place looks like it is a great place to ride for all skill levels so we should really have a good time there. It is only 60 miles from Fontana. There is also Upper Tellico ORV and Ron Taylor ORV as well and they are just over an hour to get too each. Opposite directions though. We are definately going to the MX track at least one day though.
I would like to get somewhat of an idea of who all is in so we can call the owner closer to the time and let them know. Hopefully they will open and prep the track for us during the week one day:rock

PS: ANYONE SELLING???
In the market for a slightly used, good shape, good priced:
TT-R 250
YZ250
CRF 250X
And around those lines.
eduardobibm 01-04-2007, 09:04 AM I'm on the market as well. After I rode my buddies Husky TE450, I decided the DR650 must go.
That trail sounds like something that could convince me to go to the convention.
Man, I gotta move south or west. Dirtbiking in the Northeast suck.

I am not a definant, I won't know until I find out where I am going to be stationed in July. I still have not gotten my next duty assignment. It would really suck if I commit and end up being in Guam. I think a trip to the gap would cost me a tad much if I were overseas.
I should know for sure in about a month or less. I'll let you know. And I probably won't need a place to stay because my parents have a log cabin in Waynesville... which btw I would probably be soliciting for roomates once I find out if I'll be there.

Not scared...smart!! I have been behind an ATV on the MX track before...it just plain sucks!!!! Nothing against you or atv's but I don't like being around them on the track on a bike. The roost is crazy from an atv, if the track is dry the dust is unbearable, and atv totally ruin great ruts in the turns.
all that being said, I hope the guy will let you ride yours there, I know you want to ride it and I would enjoy watching you ride it too. I just will give you plenty of space:fact
Now if you were on a bike it would be a different story:lol
plimmer 02-18-2007, 08:20 PM I just emailed them about me riding the quad...They better say that I can!!!
I think they'll probably let one in for our during the week ride. Dust and slow pokes on cow chasers is usually why quads arn't allowed.
But you should be OK. We'll speak to him nicely when we finalize the plan.:thumbup
Southern118 02-19-2007, 03:47 AM i will be on a quad if we do a trail ride. i am not sure how the bombardia will hold up on the mx track but it probably woudl do decent i guess i better order the control arm for it
Gawarrior 02-19-2007, 06:49 AM Let's here some thoughts on what days to do what rides.
We can go to Upper Tellico ORV area for the trail riding one day and do the Shiloh MX track one day for some MX riding.
any preferences on which days???

LOL, I rode behind a quad about a month ago at at track...those suckers can absolutley flatten a turn ! Take a nice rut and smooth that sucker right out:lol
I don't think that is the issue as much as the dust with quads and MX tracks though. I am guessing that is why that track probably usually doesn't allow them.
MX all week....heck I may be up for 2 or three days! There will be a good chance both of my streetbikes will be in race form for the Tally road race the sunday of the convention so I won't be riding them on the street during the week. But I will have the yz450 supermoto to ride at teh Gap:rock

kwcomp 02-20-2007, 11:45 AM Is Upper Telico where we road last year Chad?
Gawarrior 02-20-2007, 11:54 AM No Kevin, that was Ron Taylor ORV. Upper Tellico is actually on the Tenn./ N. Carolina border. We go over to the cherohala and take a dirt road right through the middle of the cherohala to get there. It is pretty cool!
Upper tellico is bigger with more trails than Ron TAylor. Same types of trails though. and a few faster ones. but also some slower rockier ones too. some really cool creek crossings as well!

fjorn 04-15-2007, 04:52 PM Alright, question on the tracks out there... What composition are they? Hardpack, moderate, or sand? I highly doubt you find much sand this far into the mountains. probably a lot of red clay and maybe some loamy dirt, but i haven't been to either track we are looking at.
Sand can be tough, but a 450 makes it a heck of a lot better!

I thought the tracks there would be more clay or hardpack than anything, but wanted to find out so I knew what to expect out there.
I took out both the 250F and 450F today. Ran the 250F first, and did okay. Bit it a few times though due to not being used to riding dirt. The 450 was an entirely different beast. I kept the RPM's up on the 250 and started to do okay, but the 450 kept wanting to bog on me due to not being used to the power.
Come June, should be good. :thumbup At least I'll be lapping that wacky dentist and maybe Shane. :lol :lol
Gawarrior 04-15-2007, 08:17 PM yeah a 250 and 450 are very similar to the same differences between a 600 and 1000.
the tracks down here are mostly clay...but most tracks that are prepped are not hardpack at all. there are very good tracks down here and I expect the one we go to will be the same way.
YzRacer212 05-04-2007, 03:53 PM Ok I haven't confirmed that I will be at the convention, but if I show up it is likely I will have my dirt bike in the truck. I checked out the website for that mx track and it looks great!

cool. Also it is only 59 miles from fontana so that isn't bad at all!! Heck, it is closer than tellico, and actually not far from tellico either.
fjorn 05-17-2007, 04:42 AM Which track is this again? I'm not finding a link for it. I can find the one Steve posted up which looks like a guys did some land clearing then called it a track. :dunno
Something I was thinking of... What tools is everyone bringing? I'll have basic stuff like some wrenches, pliers, spoke wrenches, etc. Anyone have spanners, and suspension tools? I know my weight is too much for the stock suspension on my '07 450F, but I'd love to get it setup a little better for my height/weight if possible. I might be picking this stuff up anyways and bring it down, but I need some help doing it. Hopefully from that, I can learn to set up the other bikes for my wife and son.
Also, should I get a couple of tubes? :dunno
kwcomp 05-17-2007, 04:56 AM I usually have quite a few tools with me when ever I go dirt biking. I dont usually carry a spare tube, but I do keep a couple patch kits in my tool box.
As for suspension tools........a screwdriver is really all you need. If you havent set the rear sag on your bike yet, take a look through the service manual (usually comes with Yamaha Dirt bikes) its really easy to set. Measure the distance from the axle to a fixed point on the sub frame with the suspension fully extended (read might have to lift on the back) then measure the same place again with you on it in gear (might need som help here). I believe the difference should be somewhere around 90-105mm but it varies by make/model/year so check your manual for exact numbers. Once you have that done all you need is a flat head screwdriver to make some compression and rebound adjustments as you are riding.
fjorn 05-17-2007, 05:02 AM Thanks Kev. I haven't done anything to it yet, as I was wanting to get a feel for where it's at right now. Is the initial measurement with it hanging such as on a stand, or static weight after a bounce sitting on the ground without a rider?? I've done street bikes with them static on the ground after a bounce.
kwcomp 05-17-2007, 05:07 AM The initial measurement static or on a stand seems to vary by who you talk to. I just had my R1 done and the Ohlins tech had the back of the bike lifted to full extension for the measurement and I have always done my dirt bikes like that as well. The manual has a procedure wrote in it but I dont recall which way it states. All your trying to do with Sag is get the bike at the designed ride hieght with you on it and get the shock in the middle of its working stroke so it functions properly in both rebound and compression, so its important, but not critical. Getting it close is a huge improvement for the average joe like you and me.

I'll try and get it read and adjusted slightly prior to my next track outing in just over a week. I'm going to swing by and pick up some tire levers, patches and possibly tubes.
Still trying to figure out what all I really need in terms of stuff to bring for the convention as well as track and trail riding.
kwcomp 05-17-2007, 05:45 AM A spare radiator hose for the lower hose that goes from the Rad to the water pump is good to keep to........I have pinched that bastard twice now and cut it on my 04. The 07 is an all new bike so it might not have this problem, but on the 04 when the bike lands on the right side the rad flexs just enough in the mounts to pinch that hose on the engine and cut it.
Some other things to keep in the tool box
-Spare Air Filter
-Spare clip on master link
-Coolant
-Engine Oil
-Chain Lube (dry kind if you use an O-Ring chain, stock is probably a non-O-ring)
-tire spoons
-Duct Tape
-Safety wire
-Spare nuts and bolts of various sizes
-WD-40 for hosing the bike down after your ride (makes cleaning so much easier when you get home and gets water off so it doesnt sit and corrode) I spray my engine, wheels, and Frame. DONT spray seal or Bearing areas (Wheels and steering head) as it will carry the sand and dust into them
-Spare Levers
-Spare Handle bars
-Spare grips
-Grip Glue
-Black Silicone
-Copper (exhaust) silicone
-Spare Plug
-The obvious tools like sockets, wrenchs, and screw drivers
I also carry a small metric tap&Die set that I got from Lowes
fjorn 05-17-2007, 05:50 AM Usually carry spare fluids (oil, coolant, etc). Chain lube not too worried about as I prep the bikes well before each ride. Although, for June I'll bring it. Eventually spare levers and such, but that's out of the question right now. Tire spoons I'll be picking up today along with some other stuff mentioned previously.
Then, once I'm back from the trip, I'm going to tear all three bikes down and grease them up again. :thumbup
kwcomp 05-17-2007, 05:53 AM A lot of that stuff just accumulated in my tool box on me. Our rides are usually couple day expeditions into the trails and it only takes a one or two times sitting in the truck waiting on everyone else cause your junk is broke to accumulate some key components :lol
fjorn 05-17-2007, 06:16 AM Oh yeah, given time it'll accumulate. Just like when I had the R1, I've got a few things.. ;)
I plan on adding protective stuff for the bikes though over time:
Skid plate
Radiator guards
Frame guards
Hand guards
other stuff
I also need to get spark arrestors on both YZ's. I can run without them on the track, but when I ride trails here, I have to put the screen back in. Having multiple bikes is expensive. :(
Gawarrior 05-17-2007, 10:15 AM Shawn, the website is www.themountainmx.com

fjorn 05-17-2007, 05:27 PM :thumbup
Thanks Chad.
Picked up some tools today:
Sag guage
tire levers
Air filter oil
Spanner wrench
Almost picked up some bleeder screws for the forks, but opted against it. Have a few other things to pick up before the convention such as patch kit, etc so need to save so I have enough for the trip.

Me, Chad, Eddie and Larry rode the Mountain which is a real cool MX track. You would have enjoyed it, but it was hot as hell out there.
Tell you what fjorn, save up for some motard wheels. Chad and Larry rode their motards the whole time even though they both had other bikes to ride.

I agree Rob, we will have to hit The Mountain again. That was a great track for anyone who wants to ride mx or dirtbiking. Hopefully next year more will join us.
and shawn, I second what rob said about the motards, dude I had 4 bikes at the gap this year and rode the motard 99% of the time. Me, Larry, and Rob had an absolute blast riding the motards on the gap...and even some offroad action too.

Thanks homie! I am sure you will be wearing out sliders really quick though:rock before you know it you will start looking to find the hard compound sliders so that you won't wear them out so fast:rock

Sounds like a lot of fun that I missed out. I'm definately going to pack up the YZ's and head south for a week or so this winter for some riding. While I'm tempted to get some motard wheels for a track here (100% pavement), I'm still not sure I want to. :dunno
At least you guys had a much better week than I did. I think there was one day this week that I did not have a doctor's appointment. :(

:lol :lol
If I were to do that, I'd almost rather get a WR450 so I could license it easier. ;)
Gawarrior 06-18-2007, 06:31 AM you can license the yz just as easy.
fjorn 06-18-2007, 06:37 AM Not here Chad. MN is a stickler on licensing. I'd have an easier time licensing a shoddy knock-off hard tail cruiser without suspension and lights than I would a YZ or WR. At least the WR already has head and tail lights. I'd only need to bolt on a mirror and a couple of other things in order for it to pass inspection.
fjorn 06-18-2007, 06:38 AM BTW, did I win anything at the convention? :crash
Gawarrior 06-18-2007, 06:39 AM nope, lol
fjorn 06-18-2007, 06:42 AM nope, lol
:(
But, I was still on the "paid" list :lol :lol
Gawarrior 06-18-2007, 06:45 AM you have to be there to win
fjorn 06-18-2007, 06:48 AM I was. Just not physically. :fact
Ah well, at least you guys had some extra food :crash
ducatiwv 06-18-2007, 08:35 AM Shawn,
What both my good friends have failed to mention is the epic battle down the gap where their motard comrade was defeated by Team So Fast So Clean Rookie of the year.
Out of respect for the person who won the fork kit but has absolutely no use for it ,outside giving it to needy friends I shall withold the details of the grizzly battle.

YzRacer212 06-18-2007, 09:57 AM I see you guys are all back and posting away. Sounds like you guys had a blast after I left.... next time I will show up for the end of the week instead of the beginning. Sorry I couldn't make it to MX day....... turns out my doctor told me on Friday I can start to ride MX again... but to be very careful. I might put my boots on this week and see if I can kick the 450 without hurting too bad.
Gawarrior 06-18-2007, 10:01 AM you would have liked the mx track too. It was really tame and no difficult jumps. It will be a must do again next year...but we will have to hit it earlier in the week so we are not all exhausted, lol.
