Hey guys,
I bought an 05 R1 on Friday with 570 miles. I wanted the dealer to do the 600 miles service, but he said that his service department said that for a 1000cc R1 the first service is at 1k miles, not 600 miles. Anyone else heart about this??
Thanks!
IAW my 06 R1 manual, first service is at 600 miles; this is the first phase of break-in.

It's wierd because the manual says to do the first oil change at 600 miles, but the break in period is actually until 1000 miles (page 5-3). So which one should I go by? Should I change oil at 600 or 1000 miles?

sounds like you are confusing the "break-in" period with an oil change.
change your oil and filter at 600 miles (per the manual)
At 1000 miles, your break in period is over; therefore drive your beast normally.
The break-in period means that until 600 miles, avoid prolonged periods over 6900 on the tach. b/w 600-1k, avoid prolonged periods over 8300.
The oil change is a separate issue (well...related, but not mean the same thing). Change for the first time at 600miles, then at 4k, and every 4k afterwards. (some change more often than every 4k...nothing wrong with that).

4000 miles or kilometers?
That seems an awful long time for anyone to go between oil changes on a high-performance engine, IMHO.

I agree. I do mine about every 2-3 months depending on the miles (never more than 2000). I don't commute on my bikes. They are usually only used for weekend canyon trips.

I personally agree. i change mine before 3k. just quoting the owner's manual for kawidood's sake.

But why change oil at 600 miles if the bike is still breaking in (and theoretically still causing small metal shavings) for another 400 miles? Wouldn't it make sense to change the oil once the break in period is over?

breaking it in..doesnt mean more shavings. once you get them out..they should be out..unless theres little slivers hanging in motor somewhere or still on parts.... what your breaking in.. is really rings and pistons. they need to seal.. better they seal.. better motor runs. less oil it will use. should last longer. personally i change oil more than book says. i changed mine at 42 miles on bike, then at 500 miles, and again at 1000 miles.

Ok, that makes sense. I will get my oil changed this week and while I'm at it have them to the TPS recall.
Thanks for the opinions.

Get that oil out ASAP. Your bike is broke in after the first 25 miles. That's the time when the piston rings have seated. I did my first oil and filter change at 25 miles. Throw in a few heat cycles then ride it like you want too.
