use search button. everyon uses different oils. from yamalube, castrol, mobil1, amsoil, honda oil, and every other brand you might think of. im a castrol 20w-50 guy myself. if temps never get below 20 degrees and over 100, run heavier weight oil.

I used the Mobil One MX4T 10W40 in the R1 and will use the same in my '06 R6 after I hit 2K miles on it.

It contains to much moly for your wet clutch.

MX4T Full Syn for my 1

what does MX4T Full Syn oil cost? I just ran normal valvoline oil in my 02 R6, had 15,000 miles on it. Never had a problem. Changed every 1500 miles. But im looking for what oil to run in the 06 R1, since the dam thing runs to hot, i figure maybe something else? but im not going to pay 8 bucks a quart, thats crazy!

Yeah... a whole $40 to change your oil. ouch? You gotta pay to play. The difference I noticed was that the bike just generally was quieter (valve noise) and smoother- then again the yamalube was non synthetic I believe.

Then when its riding season, i usually get 2 changes a month so 100 bucks a months is a lot of money. I guess if i when to every 3000 miles, it be ok.

I agree $8 a quart is a bit much but I guess I think of it this way, that engine you and I have is a what $6K or more I really don't know exactly what one costs but I would much rather pay $8 a quart for good oil regardless of the brand than shorten the life of my engine, to me it's a small price to pay. Same goes with oil filters. Goodluck:thumbup Tate

I agree with you 100% but what im saying is I ran the cheap stuff in my 02 R6 and change it twice as often, and had no problems. And it last just as long if not longer then others that ran the good oil and had motor problems. So dose everyone also run the expensive yamaha filters too? and when do you change oil every 3000miles or 1500miles?

I run the stock filter...I dont have much choice....No one carries anything else im my area...I am just saying that the extra $3-$4 a quart is worth the piece of mind knowing you have the best oi l money can buy in your ababy and she is protected. mI also change my oil every 2000-2500....

8x4= 36 plus a 10 dollar k&n filter is 46 bucks. So lets round up to 50. I will change the oil every 2,000 so probably 3 times during the summer, about $50 a month. I ride hard and enjoy the piece of mind knowing that I run the best oil. Like everyone else has said, its just stupid to put cheap oil into your baby.

stuntjester1
01-09-2007, 06:54 PM
agreed, thats why im asking so many questions. Because with the new bike I want to do whats best. Im just saying I used normal oil in my old bike never had any problems. But I think I probly take the piece of mind and buy the better oil, since the bike runs so hot already. The better oil will probly hold up better. Anyone got any bad stories agaisnt running fram filter? Again what I use to use on the oil bike.

I like using the K&N filter. For one reason its just a better filter and for another its a hell of alot easier to take off due to the nut type fixture thats on the end of the filter.

Sorry to bring up this thread again but how many quarts would be required with an oil change and filter on a 2004 R1? Seams like 4 but is it exactly 4 quarts or like 3.7 qts. Don't want to put too much in. Thanks,

Don't want to put too much in. Thanks, Do not put 3.7 quarts in that is only if you diassemble the engine and rebuild it. A regular change with a filter change is around 2.5-2.8 quarts and no more. I just did mine the other day and it came out to just under 2.8 quarts.

Just something to note as well, if you change your oil with the bike on a rear stand not all the oil will drain out! You must lean it over on it's kickstand...:thumbup

Do not use a fram filter on your bike. I have heard that there are some tracks that wont even let you on them with a fram,(i dont know first hand because i wont use them). Everyone i know uses a K&N or the yamasuck. There is issues with some cardboard in them and the bypass pressure(Rumor not confirmed by me). Castrol R4 superbike oil is the only juice for my baby! Yamasuck is worse than diesel oil you get at tweak-mart.

I use Motul 300V fully synthetic ever since breaking in the motor using regualr oil, also use a scott's re-usable stainless steel oil filter and this has decreased the runnig temps in the bike during the hot summer months here in Toronto. Also switched out the factory brake fluid and used Motul DOT 5.1 since the day I picked up the bike. Just my 2 cents.

So what is the general mileage to switch to fully synthetic oil? Only have 600 miles so far and Ive heard maybe to wait till at least 5K to make the switch to synthetic. At that mileage it will be 3 years before I switch!

I use fully synthetic in my R1, but it gets hammered. I always buy a good quality make. As for price in the UK try paying £40 plus for enough oil for a change then another £15 for a filter, a K&N filter will cost £30... in US$ at least $100... I have a Thundercat to get to work and back, 100miles a day, just on 50k miles. It does get used properly as well my tryeswere blue in the summer! I use ordinary motor oil in that. I had a GT550 that I did 110k with car oil and never had clutch slip. I do however change the oil every 3k as I recon the gears will mash up the oil particles sooner rather than later. But rather than spend £300 per year on oil I pay £75ish...

i use the full synthetic silkolene. there is a local guy here in tulsa that races an r6 in ama. they use silkolene, so i know it's good stuff. i've seen the motors torn down in the shop and they are always flawless. the mechanics at k&n motorcycles (oldest yamaha dealership in the US) say if you're running full synthetic theres no need to change it before 5k. i changed over to synthetic at 1k and have 5k now. i'm getting ready to do an oil change, only because the bike has been sitting all winter. silkolene is very expensive around $12 a qt, but i only change it every 5k. which might only add up to twice this year. i'm not saying silkolene is the best stuff, but any synthetic is usually a good choice. it has cleaning agents and is guaranteed not to sludge.

I think you can go to full synthetic as soon as your wallet says its ok. There has been some info on the net regarding many high-end cars coming with full syntheic straight out of the factory. But I think its wise to break it in with dino oil then just go to full syn when your done breaking it in.
