I have just purchased a 06 R1 the dealer told me not to touch the suspension adjustments unless I am at the track. I'm 6' 250 lbs and I think the factory would set it up for a 180 pound rider??? The owners manual is extremely vague about the set up. Any help would be great thanks.

http://www.ohlins.com/Motorcycle/Settingupyourbike/tabid/59/Default.aspx go to the Ohlins site.there's lots of good info there and sag sheets to help you with this.If you'v never done this before it can be confusing

Racetech shows the stock springs being for 170 lb rider. To get proper sag on that machine you will likely need new springs front and rear. Aside from the sag, you can get a starting point at http://www.sportrider.com/tech/146_0006_susp/.

The biggest thing you want to try to get straight is your rider sag. The damping is subjective and may change due to a million different reasons. But getting the rider sag set for your weight is going to be the challenge with the stock springs. I weigh about 230 and I ended up replacing the front and rear springs. While i had the suspension pulled apart I had Race Tech do the gold valves. I would have to say that the suspension improvements have been the single best improvement I've made to my bikes. After spending so long riding my bikes under sprung, it's great to have a good responsive properly setup suspension. Where in CT are you? I was born up in that neck of the woods. Lived there until my job relocated me. Take care...

Dan, I grew up in Shelton but now live in Meriden. Did you go with Race tech springs? I have been riding about 7 years on 7 different machines. I now Own a 2005 Big Dog Chopper and after getting tired of the lack of cornering and high speed wobble I purchased a 2006 R1. This handling stuff is all new to me. Coming off the chopper the R1 feels like its on rails but I know they are set up for Race weight Cat's and not 250 lb guys. I will do some homework and do some upgrades this winter. Thanks a lot for the help. Ted

My best friend in High School used to live in Shelton. I was out of Bridgeport. Haven't been there in MANY years. Read through those articles. When you are done with that, there is a suspension article written by Dave Hodges I'll try to locate. It's pretty awesome. I would recommend you respring with some stiffer springs. These things handle well... but even better with proper springs. If you want to do Racetech, they will replace the rear with very little if any labor unless you valve it; and the fronts will run about $85 in labor. While they've got it apart you may wish (I really recommend) getting the Gold Valves. When your riding outgrows the Racetech stuff you can go for Ohlins. The Ohlins gear can easily get into the price range of half what you spent on the bike, so you might not want to start on the top shelf :lol But seriously, I run Race Tech in both my bikes and recommend it to all my friends. At a minumum, have the right springs for your weight. Because of the vague damping adjustments, I recommend the Gold Valve. If I get up in your neck of the woods I'll have to drop you a line and we can go grab a :beer

Dan, My cousin is a really good wrench and has a nice bike lift. Whats the best way to support the bike when the shock and forks are removed. I am getting the Race tech springs and valves. I will send the stuff to them in Cali. Thanks, Ted

I used a front stand that went into the triple tree bottom clamp for the front, and then I used a combination of a rear stand and jackstands under the footpegs to get the rear. Once the back wheel is off you can move the swingarm easily minus the shock load. You'll love the results from them!

Did you get the compression & rebound valves together?

Did you get the compression & rebound valves together? There's only one listed. http://www.racetech.com/evalving/english/Srchpr.asp?bikeid=476&manufacture=Yamaha&model=YZF%2DR1&year=04%2D05&TABLEINFO=street&langname=english
