I don't know about the rest of you, but after about 10 times through the Gap I need to go somewhere else, especially when the crowds really start picking up. This year I plan on taking some longer rides away from the crowds (and cops ). I figure there's probably others who wouldn't mind doing the same thing so if anybody has any ideas on taking longer group rides post them in here. I've got Microsoft Streets and Trips 2006 and can plot out the routes if anybody wants. I've attached the (2) rides I'm thinking about going on:
Cades Cove - starts at CROT, goes through Gap, down to Foothills Pkwy, up to Townsend, TN, then into the Smoky Mtn. National Park, up Cades Cove Rd to the top at Cades Cove. Cades Cove Rd is beautiful as it follows along a river most of the way and is twisty (not like the Gap, but much better than the Skyway). A side trip can be made into Gatlinburg as well as it's very close. (Est. 120 miles round trip. More if go into Gatlinburg)
Blue Ridge Pkwy - Pretty self explanatory. Leaves Fontana Village and heads East to the Blue Ridge Pkwy. Rides Pkwy over to Asheville, NC, then returns. (Est 230 miles round trip)
Anybody else interested?
AnonymousR1 01-07-2007, 07:49 PM I'd probably be down for that..
SteelR1 01-07-2007, 08:04 PM I make "LOOP" rides up there everytime I go. The Gatlinburg one is cool to get some good lunch. The Parkway ride is really good especially if you go all the way to Boone and eat there. Another ride is down to Two Wheels Only, there are two different ways to make that one. I plan on riding one LOOP each day I'm there. I will get there on Tuesday and would love to tag along with any other riders or I could even lead a couple rides.
elviswarrior 01-07-2007, 08:18 PM Im always open for longer rides! The Dragon is cool, but its not as cool as a racetrack, so.....you know. Longer rides, seeing different things is what got me hooked on riding long ago, and now keeps me going in between trackdays.....count me in for a few rides, wherever you guys decide to go....:rock :thumbup

give me rough directions of what route to take from robbinsville and I'll map it out. Also do you want to make a loop out of it or just get to the end, turn around and come back the same way?

OK, here's a stab at a map for the Blood Mountain trip that shows stops at Two Wheels Only (Suches) and Blood Mountain (8,11). Est 215 miles round trip. Let me know if I need to change anything.

Gawarrior 01-10-2007, 11:06 AM YOu can make a huge loop down to Blood Mountain via Hwy 28 through Highland N.C. and then turn down Warwoman road. Head towards Helen Ga. and then take Richard B. Russell Parkway over to Blood Mountain (hwy 129, same as the gap). from 129 you can ride over to hwy 60 and check out two and then head back to 129 and take it all the way back to the Gap.
it is a full day ride but is pretty fun. The cops are only bad around 129 and 60 in Ga...they are generally not on the Richard B. Russel or any other roads...and it is hit and miss on blood mountain. During the week they probably aren't bad.
But remember, you don't want to be acting a fool that far away from Fontana...so be careful and the cops won't fool with you anyway.
Gawarrior 01-10-2007, 11:09 AM Me, Ned, Eddie did a ride one year that took us all over N.C. and Tennessee. We had a good time and saw some neat stuff. It isn't always about finding the best roads as it is exploring some cool areas.
A trip up to Boone and Shady Valley would be a pretty good ride as well. That would be an all dayer as well.

I've driven from Johnsonville, TN to Boone about a year ago (in a cage) but was thinking the whole time I'd love to have the bike for that ride. It was great.

Killer Curves 01-11-2007, 10:42 AM Just picked up this thread, and I have to agree with SVT about Cades Cove - it's really slow and nearly always choked with cars, many which stop for no apparent reason, so might not be too much fun, unless you go early, as it is not open to cars before 9 (or maybe 8 - have to look into it) When that's the case though, you have to look out for bicycles.

BTW, mind if we turn the Gap trip into a "business" trip KC? :secret: I PM'd you about it before regarding tech jobs in the area, but how about a quick recruiter/consultant interview so I can write it off? :sneaky

LE351 01-11-2007, 11:48 AM LOL Marty, funny story!
How ya been man??
It may be funny, but it is 100% true. I have a picture in my home computer! It was soooo funny, that even the other customers sitting on the outside patio at the restaurant were even laughing.
I did also find out what "okra" was. Of course, being from the north, we all had a good laugh.
I have been fine Nick--very busy since my father has been not feeling well for the past couple months. Between my job, his business, and everything else going on, I REALLY need a gap trip soon! I'll call ya when Im coming down, maybe you can come down with me.
What interstate are you closest to: 81, 77, 79, or 68?

I m glad he's good, Ned alright, sometimes,:lol...the boys already are talking about catching him more fish earlier this year:lol. It would be good to explore some of the dirt areas around Fontana, that is if they don't get mad at us riding our bikes around the village.

I don't think they will mind if we don't blast around the cabins. And that road out of the back of fontana is actually a state road so I think we can do some serious exploring out there. that will be fun!

Devils triangle: aka hwy 116. Good stuff. I definitely want to make some loops. I know some other good roads near the devils triangle, and have a great route through GA. Go down 28 to Warwoman, over to blood mountain, eat lunch at the little place on 129 & 19. They're open all day and no dogs :) Then up 60 through Suches, 68 to Telico Plains, and over the Skyway back to Fontana. It's a full day, but all good roads. Anyway, I'll be happy to lead, follow, whatever.
Skeeter 06-04-2007, 04:43 PM That sounds like a nice ride Mark. I didn't get the chance to hit North GA and Blood Mountain last year.
Super_Dave_344 06-04-2007, 05:08 PM i might be up for a long ride like that. Id like ot check out the warwoman deal. I heard people talk about that ride a few weeks ago when i was there on the motard but it sounded like a long haul on a "dirt bike" so i passed.
dodavis 06-04-2007, 05:19 PM Be carefull on 116. It has great curves and scenery but the pavement is broken in places and there tends to be gravel in some of the best sections of the road.
Gawarrior 06-04-2007, 08:45 PM i might be up for a long ride like that. Id like ot check out the warwoman deal. I heard people talk about that ride a few weeks ago when i was there on the motard but it sounded like a long haul on a "dirt bike" so i passed.
yeah dave, it is too far for the motard.
Meanstreak 06-05-2007, 10:32 AM I don't know about the rest of you, but after about 10 times through the Gap I need to go somewhere else, especially when the crowds really start picking up.
What days are you guys planning the rides ? Coming from the great white north it would be nice to hook up with some of the veterans of the area
We'll probably figure that out when we get there.
ZRider 06-05-2007, 10:43 AM yeah dave, it is too far for the motard.
