Probably nothing to be worried about, but I am getting ready to change out the steels and fibers, and install barnett's spring conversion kit into my 02.
I have worked on my ZRX many times and have no trouble with that set up, but am wondering if there is anything to look out for when doing this swap. Never seen the inside of this one. I read something about a wire of some sort...the the heck is that all about?
Any insight would be appreciated.:thumbup

A small piano wire holds the inside plates. Some guys are afraid to touch them but they are no big deal. I've done several clutch jobs on the R1 and have replaced the piano wire each time with no problems. Just make sure the wire is all the way in the groove and you're good to go.

for drag racing.. just remove piano wire all together. it holds last steel plate and fiber in place. its fragile as hell. reusing it is not good idea.. but for drag racing and pulling clutches.. its just in way. for what you do with it, it wont make any difference that its not in there. also putting cover back on is little tricky and takes some practice..but basically its just same on plates as other bikes.

1LongR1,
I'm glad you said that about the wire. I'm in the process of doin the clutch on my 01 and my buddy said I should just run with out the wire, and when I'm done that's how I'll run it with the Barnett SR-3. At least I know it'll work.

Can you let me know the outcome of the clutch & spring conversion - I'm about to perform this same upgrade.

crammer what do you need to know. i have put kit in couple bikes. its single best clutch updrage you can do. it will help with clutch life and you can add heavier springs or use lighter ones.

I'm just looking for the overall process and the outcome. I guess I'm looking for the good, the bad and the ugly of the install and outcome (performance)

it by itself wont do much for performance. it will insure the clutches dont slip with added power. without as much slippage, they will last longer. down side is that putting cover on is little tricky. its pain and i have taken cover off over 200 times. also with HD springs its tough on your hand for pulling clutch is you use all stiffest springs. ive never been fan of diaphram cltuches. i dont like there feel on hard accel while slipping clutch. with this kit, i like feel of clutch lever and to me it makes clutch more predictable. you know when there going to grab and when there not when sliding clutch.

While putting back the cover, open the oilfill plug and get some light in there, that way you can easily get that sliding-in part in.
