: r1 clutch boss problems???? recall? who has changed thier own clutch??
vilemd 01-16-2007, 01:37 PM well i have seen a few posts were poeple have described the grooves on the inside part of the clutch boss were the springs go... i have a 04 r1, i like top speed riding here in south florida, no stunting or 1/4 on this bike, so i was suprised to see my clutch slipping. i got the barnett clutch kit but when i took off the stock plates in the clutch they didnt look too bad at all. but i noticed the grind marks on the clutch boss from the springs. and since other have noticed this and its always on the inside im wondering if thats a design problem or spring problem? and im not sure if the clutch boss needs to be replaced??
but the way i see it if the spring compressess around that rod from the clutch boss, then its gona affect its performance majorly if the spring keeps bending and cutting into the clutch boss like that, not to mention that the metal particals are now loose in your engine.
i contacted yamaha in cali directly, they said call my shop, the shop guy said it should be fine and then claimed he dousnt really look at that area??? so i called yamaha back and they are checking into it. but im wondering how many other poeple have changed thier clutch plates and noticed the same thing on the inside of the clutch boss. i dont want to install the race clutch until i know i dont have to replace the entire clutch boss

vilemd 01-18-2007, 07:52 AM well im still waiting for the response from yamaha, no response after 2 more emails. i did go to the largest YAMAHA dealership in the county. they at first said they didnt know, then they said it should be fine to just use the same part, then i was told it would effect me when i release the clutch. this to me is a major problem. i understand its never gona break the clutch but if it effects the clutch, especially on take off, i dont see why yamaha would admit that its gona have an effect on the clutch but claim its okay to use the same gauged clutch boss.
that BULLSHET to me. how can you say that a clutch boss which isnt supposed to have any marks actually has deep cuts into the metal which holds springs isnt going to have an effect on the clutch. the walls on the clutch boss aren't that thick, eventually over time with that friction its going to cut completely threw the metal
1longR1 01-18-2007, 10:01 AM everyone i have had does same thing. on one barnett had sent me wrong springs and made gouges bigger than that and made it where clutch wouldnt engage... took me forever to figure that out. one of mine had finally cracked from wrong springs. even with new springs and stock ones, this happens. normally i just take little emory cloth or file and take off the sharp edges on them. not too much you can do about it. piece is not that expensive to replace.
vilemd 01-18-2007, 02:16 PM yea im hearing that alot of poeple are seeing the same thing when they take apart the clutch and look around the springs. i spoke to a YAMAHA MOTORS rep, she claims that no one has reported any problems but she had me drop off the bike today at a dealership so one of the techs can check it out. the shop is gona contact yamaha directly and then will see what they say.......
if anyone else has had a problem with the springs in the stock clutch cutting grooves, please let me know
jmacf14 04-11-2007, 04:34 PM yep, I am seeing the same issue with my 2005 R1. I have just over 8000 miles and my clutch started slipping at higher rpms. So I got the EBC clutch kit, and when I pulled the clutch apart, I saw those grooves that you have mentioned. The tech at my local shop said that it will be fine So I installed the new set, and now I cant get the clutch to disengage fully, so with the handle pulled all the way in and I start the bike in gear, the bike tries to roll forward, and wont shift into N. Am I missing something? I tried adjusting cable and even pulled cover off to relocate the position of the arm, still no luck. I am wondering if those grooves are causing this problem. Causing the springs to bind or something.Any one have any Ideas? Oh never mind I figured out the problem, but I will be sure to recheck those grooves on the boss next time I'm in there.
vilemd 06-25-2007, 07:06 AM i dont get it??? if anyone can help... so i replaced my clutch with the barnett clutch kit, springs and plates. i owned the bike for about a year before i lost the clutch, i install the new clutch plates and about 45 days later this one is slipping also?? anyone know what else the problem could be????
please help
BSR-1 06-25-2007, 10:05 AM was the new clutch adjusted properly? it should have some slack in cable. if it was slipping even slightly it would wear out very fast.
mxracer95 06-25-2007, 10:20 AM <--- 40,000 miles on my '06. Still OEM clutch, no slipping, no problems. That grooving is normal.
vilemd 06-25-2007, 11:21 AM the cable was adjusted . it was fine, no problems for about a month. and now its slipping again. i justed noticed it kind of overnight type of thing. felt great first month thou. but but OEM clutch just seemed to go out overnight too. im wondering if it could be somthing else or that clutch boss
I had the SAME trouble & spent almost a grand getting ALL the OEM parts. In the past I have had GOOD LUCK with Barnett & ended up getting that in. I too had the "grooves" & was a bit worried. But only having a day to get it going & on to the track I ignored it. GLAD I DID, because it was flawless & HAVE HAD NO TROUBLE SINCE!!!
Sure you did the right 'torque specs', but I did a touch extra on the 5 spring screws. SOLID
I noticed the same thing on my 05 a few years back & it just got worse.
At 10,000 miles last winter "minor damage" - polished wear locations w. emery paper.

May be hard to judge the gouge depth but at the base of towers the spring was tearing in pretty deep - def bound for total failure at some point if left alone.
It was getting noisy & noticed some crud in my oil. You can see all the "dark alum crud" that was floating around still stuck to parts.
Put in an STM slipper & ditched all the worn items.
Kangaroo 05-07-2009, 02:06 PM wow scared to open mine up... :scared:
Good luck & have fun putting the cover back on..:secret:
zx6r2yzfr1 05-10-2009, 05:58 AM you guys are making me nervous now...... i have an '05 with 23,500 miles and have never had the engine open. my clutch makes a little noise but operates perfectly. i do not stunt or drag race it, i just commute with and an occasional weekend ride with a group here in town. i was considering replacing the clutch just because, what with the miles and all, but now i am a little concerned about opening it up. right now it is "out of sight, out of mind". i guess this problem needs to be on my winter tear down to do list.
One Chance 08-23-2009, 07:32 PM my clutch just went on my 06 r1. I have 23k i haven't dogged it but today i did a few drag runs and now it slips and seeing this make me fell like i am in for a little surprise when i pull the cover. I have to release the clutch just about all the way before it will engage..
One Chance 08-24-2009, 08:41 PM took a look at it today, found my clutch just needed to be adjusted. I adjusted the clutch and changed the oil since it was coming up anyway. took it out for a spin. and what do you know good as new!!!
87CR250R 08-27-2009, 11:39 PM I wouldn't consider that kind of wear a problem. I would toss new OEM clutch springs and a new set of frictions on their and call it good. I say OEM springs because the quality of aftermarket springs, especially EBC, is not there. Most clutch problems seem to be caused by the springs. Notching of the basket and hub are also an issue but not so much on the pavement.
If you're concerned about clutch wear at 23k miles, don't be. Street bike clutches last a very long time.
One Chance 09-29-2009, 01:51 PM bump
One Chance 09-29-2009, 01:52 PM is there any way without damaging the boss assy to get the boss nut off with out the clutch tool??
87CR250R 09-29-2009, 09:15 PM On the dirt bikes, I put the bike in gear and put a 2x4 through the spokes across the top of the swingarm. But, I strongly advise against changing your clutch hub simply because it has wear marks from the springs.
One Chance 09-29-2009, 10:02 PM thanks for the reply, i wasn't looking to replace the hub assy. just inspect it i am aware of the marking form the spring, it is normal. I took all the clutch fiber out and boss ring. already knew i wore the clutch down. i order all the internals. thanks again! im replace the clutch with a yamaha clutch and barnett springs
87CR250R 09-29-2009, 11:03 PM Stick with the Yamaha springs, there are a lot of quality related issues with aftermarket springs. I don't know about the R1 specifically but this holds true for most motorcycles. The OEM typically has much better quality control than the aftermarketers. As simple as a spring is, it is one of the most sensitive items in a bike to quality problems. EBC used to be one of the worst.

Can't get the cable tight when the covers back on?
Rotate the arm on the cover 90 degrees before sliding the cover back on.
