Took the fairing off my bike to detail the bike for this weekend at Jennings. Walked in the garage this afternoon to see THIS!! Looks to me like the bolt I took out from the fairing has cracked the case internally?? WTF do I do? Bike needs to be up and running if possible with a surefire fix no later than Friday!! Ironic thing is I was going to pick up oil tonite to do an oil change... well now I gotta clean up, not a drain problem.. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?

Wait a second - does the fairing bolt to that hole??

~R1CrazyTex~
01-17-2007, 03:30 PM
It was the bolt that was connecting my mid fairing. That's it.. the oil is seeping from that... It's managed to drain 100% of the oil since evening!!! Man someone has to know what's up!!??

That sucks!! Maybe the bolt was too long and penetrated the case?

~R1CrazyTex~
01-17-2007, 03:33 PM
That sucks!! Maybe the bolt was too long and penetrated the case? It was a stock bolt.. it should not have done that. and I didn't over tighten it. or so I thought, It came off with the same effort all the others did, very minimal!

There is one plus side to this - if it does infact need to be replaced - it's only the oil pan and not the engine case... PS - Have you called elvis yet?

Surley thats the bellypan fairing mount point? Can't imagine what caused it if it was a stock fairing bolt. You just need a new sump pan, could be a lot worse.

I wonder if anyone has a spare oilpan laying around that they can examine and see if there is a hole in theirs or something.. You're gonna have to take the headers off to change the oil pan.. Not sure what else is in the way, but if you get it ordered, you might wanna get it all prepared now so you can just slap it on when it gets there..

Just sucks, i wanted to ride out there. But I guess it's better to find out NOW than on I-10 doing 100mph OR at Jennings and have to find a way to tow the bike back to JAX. Alls well, I'm going to the Circus tonite anyways.. the hell with it!!

Well guys, Dave called me at work, and trust me, if Dave called you guys EVERYDAY at work, you would get pissy too! He had to join the circus before I got off work, so I didnt go over there and look at it yet, but I do know what happened. Dave, ya know how Im always giving you crap about how you take off your plastics every time you wash your bike? Well that just bit you in the arse mang. Theres no need to put that kind of wear and tear on the fasteners and holes. Now, there are a couple different length fasteners, and as many times as you take those fairings off, they were bound to get mixed up. Last time you put your fairings on was when that happened, probably just put the wrong bolt in the bottom hole, penetrated the case, and the bolt itself kept the oil from leaking out. Remove bolt and presto, oil leak grande. Even if the bolt wasnt too long, wear and tear killed it. If the part is pure aluminum we can remove it and weld it back up. If ya dont like that idea, we can put a new one on, no biggie, but your buyin the beer!:drunk: Dont think Im being rough on him guys,:chair: I first met Dave cuz he needed help with his bike and through this here forum we discovered that we lived within a block of each other. All experienced bikers should help out and guide the less experienced, and thats what Dave and I do. Giving him a healthy ration of shite is just a bonus for me! :hammer: No worries Dave, we will get it fixed on the cheap cuz the part doesnt cost much and you arent paying labor....well, a 12 pack maybe, but thats it..........:thumbup

hell man leave bolt out of fairing and just put one in drain pan with some sealer on it, and sealing washer. sucks, but you have to replace pan anyways. never fails something always goes wrong when you dont need it to.
