Hey this is my first post on here so be nice, I live in Australia and have just taken ownership of a 2000 blue R1. The bike has done 58,000km and i dont know its past ie. race bike, tourer, i dont know where its been and what its done... The only hint is that it has been dropped on the right side, not smashed only dropped and being in the know am getting a complete respray in either yamaha blue mixed with a candy apple blue or black with red pearl highlights. Now i want to rebuild the engine but being from the two-stroke culture do not know what is involved in a rebuild of a four-stroke, what is the list of parts needed to complete this rebiuld?? also is it worth going slightly better with better pistons, cams, ect ect...

Hi m8, Yes if you rebuilding its worth going for better quality parts if you also have the money. To rebuild the R1 motor back in a reasonable state you need first to brake down the engine in pieces. Then measure the bores. Are they ok and straight? Or they conical and way too worn? If not ok you better off bying a whole motor really. In general this is the cheaper solution by far if you are looking for stock. In the UK nowdays on ebay I hear you can find motors with 8000 miles for around 450 GBP. I am sure same happens on australian ebay too. If you still insisting on rebuilding the motor you can, but you may end up really spending more money. To start ,get yourself a service manual of the 2000 R1 , go through and you will see what you need to do. Too much to list here...You need to look also in the forum threads "headwork winter project" and "home porting questions". I know they dont seem to initially interest you (by title) but you will find a lot of info on "how to" on rebuilding. Regards,

really depends on state of your parts. tranny needs to be checked since you have it out..that can be expensive. anywhere from 100-600$(US) if everything is good you at least need to have valves check which can cost @2-300$ or less. if pistons are good and cylinder bores are good you will at least need Rings, gaskets, and with that many miles you need to have crank checked(again more $$) and put in new main and rod bearings. you might as well put in new cam chain, tensionr. maybe even new oil pump... so in end it will cost a bit of $$ to rebuild. like box said..prolly best route is finding used motor with low miles. then just do swap. i would expect a motor rebuild to cost between $1500-2500 if you did it right(course that depends on what it needs) but as you can see..your better off with used motor in most cases.

As you can see it can work out quite expensive. If the bike has no gearbox issues (primarily first & second gear) and doesn't burn excessive amounts of oil I would just ride it (if I were you) - with reglalr oil changes and scheduled maintenance! Its not unusual for an R1 engine to go on for 100,000 miles (160,000kms?)
