 Hey guys. I need help. I bought a used 05 R1 with 6K miles on it. Everything was fine for a few hundred miles and then the clutch started slipping. I replaced it and rode about another few hundred miles, and then it started slipping again.
I did do a few clutch wheelies, but not enough to fry the thing (I thought).
I am going to run this one out until I can't use it anymore. I still have the clutch basket to the other clutch and was thinking about replacing the bent/burnt plates with aftermarket ones and slappin' it in the Raven.
Can anyone recommend good aftermarket clutch plates and/or springs?
I was thinking about going with Barnett, but I was told that it would be harder to pull in the lever with stronger springs. I also have heard mixed reviews with Barnett plates. Someone recommended using stronger springs (Barnett) with stock plates???
Has anyone had problems with 04, 05, 06 R1 clutches also?
Thanks in advance for all replies.

I've got over 28,000 miles on the original clutch of my 2005 R1. No problems, and I do all kinds of wheelies.
But I don't do a lot of drag racing, and I have changed the oil and filter religiously every 1500 miles.
IMHO, biggest thing you can do for your clutch is frequent oil changes.
And, although I'm sure you've already done this, considering that you've replaced the clutch already, I would check to make sure your clutch is in adjustment. If it's not, the clutch may be slightly disengaging, causing "slip."

Thanks for reply. I am going to have the adjustments checked out.
Hopefully, that's all it is. It's not slipping as bad as b4 I changed it. When I looked at the plates of the original clutch after 6K miles, a few were fryed.

Hey actually, I have been having the same problem. I bought mine brand new off the showroom floor, no one has ever rode it but me, I have done everything the service manual said too (as far as regular servicings and oil changes) and have had three clutches on my '05 now. They told me to stop doing wheelies... the only wheelies I might do are acceleration wheelies. What the hell...?

Like someone said before, check your freeplay at the clutch perch. Also, synthetic oil will make it slip, stick with dino oil.

okay. stick with OEM plates and steels. others are more expensive and not any better. the steels are weak point. there like $1.50 when other bikes steels at $7. they are dirt cheap and warp really easy. so avoid doing multiple clutch up time after time.. allow them to cool a bit. keep freeplay in lever and adjusted best you can. get set of aftermarket springs like barnett or ebc to stiffen them up. it will prolong clutch life as well.

i've used motul for 15,100 miles of beating, racing and clutch poping
and just now at one of my races is when the clutch started to slip
i do my oil changes ever 1500 miles when it was on the street now i do them every 3 race event or track events.
