Rocketracer99 01-24-2007, 10:16 PM there as been over 1400 06 R1's to develop a stretched timing chain. Yamaha says it is caused to be caused by faulty timing chain sensors. I took my bike into the shop for my routine 18,000 mile valve adjustment. i took it in there. 1 hour later, they called me sayin that the majority of my valves are bent, and my timing chain was stretched. Yamaha will warrantee everything. I am getting an entire upper engine rebuild. Get a valve adjustment, and tell them to check your timing chain. You dont even have to pay for the valve adjustment if they find that your timing chain is stretched.
yamaha said the reason for the timing chain being stretched is for doing wheelies on a stock 45 tooth sprocket. Is there anyone else having this problem

:confused::confused::confused:
are you sure you heard that correctly?
1longR1 01-25-2007, 11:16 AM i have never heard Yamaha give anyone numbers like that.. and i worked for dealer. so that surprises me. was it under warranty?? i would guess not unless you had extended. Sounds like Shop guys telling you little extra info, that may or maynot be true. but its worth looking at for sure.
Rocketracer99 01-25-2007, 08:29 PM yah... the service manager told me the reason the timing chain stretched was due to doing wheelies on the stock sprocket... i bought my bike april of 06, and i rode it from vegas to virginia twice. and i didnt start doing wheelies til about 12,000 miles... i am now at 17,900 and i went in for my valve adjustment, and they said all that crap. they also said the stretched timing chain is the reason why my valves are bent, and the shims on the cams are mushroomed to the head. i have no idea if these guys are bullshi**ing me, but i am getting an entire upper engine rebuild, for free...
gabeowen 01-25-2007, 10:08 PM Something sounds fishy. I'd take it elsewhere. It sounds like that dealership is trying to score some extra work..
How the **** does doing wheelies on a stock sprocket have anything to do with the cam chain stretching.. I'd almost believe somebody just saying doing wheelies in general.. BUT what does stock sprockets have to do with it... Stupid dealerships.
Rocketracer99 01-25-2007, 11:13 PM i know man... they have had my bike for 3 weeks now, when i took it in for a simple valve adjustment... then they say all this shit... i was tryin to figure out if anyone else is having this problem... but i got a new akropovic exhaust system out of them, and a pc3... for free... talk to the dick who leads all the other dicks, and that how you get free stuff...haha..

Maybe they are trying to pay for your parts by charging Yamaha for bogus work.. :dunno
Rocketracer99 01-26-2007, 07:27 AM i have no idea... but i ordered the single sided swing arm for my bike off of tobefast.com. and it will be here in like 3 weeks. now i need to find a new dealer to go to... just found it humorous that they replaced all of those parts, and gave me some free shit for my "inconvenience", people are shmucks out here in vegas. but i saw the bill that they are sending to yamaha for all of the warrantee repairs, it has like 29 hours of labor on it. at he abor rate out here is 80/hr....do that math. they could have totaled out the bike. that is just labor.. thats isnt including the parts they kept ordering.

Nothing is free, so if you want the real story, dig deeper and I'm sure you will find it...
JAYSTENSEC4CYL 01-26-2007, 08:38 AM tHE ONLY CHAIN THAT GETS STREACHED WHEN YOU DO WHEEILES IS THE DRIVE CHAIN, THATS A FACT.
This is just bad information from someone who does not really know what is going on, no offence.
1longR1 01-26-2007, 10:31 AM I dont know any dealership in world that give you a $1500 exhaust and $300 PC for free as inconvenince.... theres more to it than this. Yamaha wont pay for that stuff.
Rocketracer99 01-26-2007, 10:55 AM the story about the timing chain i think is bull. my dad who is a master mechanic for 35 years, said there is no way that wheelies, or a large amount of torque, could stretch the timing chain.
and about the inconvenience items... he asked what i wanted, i told him what i wanted, the owner it getting it done. The owner of the yamaha dealer also owns 5 other motorcycle dealers in vegas. He was a nice guy. HE understood that my bike is my only mode of transportation, and that i have been out of work because my bike is in the shop... for 3 weeks, for a 4.5 hour job

and your right. he isnt turning the bill for the exhaust and pc to yamaha motor co. that is his way of making things right for HIS dealership jerking me around.
gabeowen 01-26-2007, 12:28 PM and your right. he isnt turning the bill for the exhaust and pc to yamaha motor co. that is his way of making things right for HIS dealership jerking me around.
That shows he runs a shady business. Reminds me of used car dealerships, screwing around to win a sale and making false paperwork to get people approved, ect. Very shady, personally I'd never do business with somebody like that.. Exhaust and PC3 or not..
But I'm glad you are on the other end of the deal rather than the one getting screwed..?
Speed_Devil 01-26-2007, 07:36 PM If its that easy...ask for two PCIII's and send me one!
Rocketracer99 01-26-2007, 08:56 PM i dont think im gettin screwed. but i do think they are makin a killing on labor. they have only taken the bike apart once, and they have charged 29 hours of labor. parts are free...after the pc and exhaust, they are still making money. just makes me wonder if they do this to anyone else that comes in with engine problems... haha...
james1300 01-27-2007, 12:02 AM Makes me wonder if they even took the bike apart.
If they had old parts from another NON-warrrentee job, it would be EZ to bill Yamaha a butt load of hours at YAMAHAS FLAT RATE, and not have to tear into the motor at all. They give you an exhaust and PC3 for your 3 weeks w/o your bike. Bill Yamaha for PARTS and Labor, Shelve the new the parts,
and pocket the 29 hours billed to Yamaha, buy you a exhaust and PC3 at their cost. Thanks for playin!
vcyclenut 01-29-2007, 07:07 AM you are telling me the bike was running fine you take it in for a valve adjustment and the valves are bent ????? no way and the shims are mushroomed thats comical. They are using your bike to cover their ass on something else

onefastmx5 01-30-2007, 10:52 PM First off, the flat rate to switch out a head isn't 29 hours. I think the flat rate to rebuild the whole motor is somewhere around 18-20. My money says that money is going straight to their pocket. The only thing they have to be careful for is if yamaha asks for the broken parts (which will happen sometimes) but maybe they have thought ahead and already have some laying around? The only way to know for sure is ask to see your bike in pieces... I bet it wasn't even touched. The Pipe and PC3 is to smooze you over so you don't question it.
Rocketracer99 01-31-2007, 11:57 PM supposedly it is done, they called me today right at closing time, so i couldnt go get it tonight. but im curious to see if its gonna be wht they said it was gonna be. ill keep you all updated to what was really worked on, and ill see if i can figure out how to post up my reciept so you all can see what they did... im sort of anxious
