hi guys, ive got a 2000 model, hopefully you can give me some ideas on how to fix my bike, my problem is that when changing from 1st to 2nd gear i get a loud clunk noise, also sometimes when going from neutral to 1st, ive read that this is a comman fault, does anyone know the possible cause, thank you

I would say your Clutch needs to be adjusted or maybe the Clutch plates are bad causing it to not hold pressure thus slippage. Just a couple things to check. Let other on the board chime in on this also. Very knowledgeable people on this site.

I would be more concerned about the 1st to 2nd clunk, that isn't right. If its a gearbox problem the engine will need to come out.

On the 1998 and 2002 R1s I owned, the 1st-to-2nd shift would sometime get a decent-sized clunk, although the bike would complete the shift OK and without any bad side effects after 24,000 miles on the 1998 and 16,000 miles on the 2002. This was from brandy-new on each bike, and although it didn't do it every time, it did it often enough so that it was something I considered a normal occurence. It seemed most likely to do this while shifting at lower RPM (like 3,000-5,000), as when riding through a congested town or a small road with a low speed limit. Does it do this when shifting at higher RPM like 6,000-8,000? Mine was OK here.

thanks for the replies, from what i can remember ( bike stored away now) it happens more at low revs, maybe once in 25, along with the clunk the gear wouldnt engage, im sure the clutch is set correctly, maybe i will change the clutch pads before i start riding again,:nforc: :nforc:

More than likely it's normal. Mark 99 R1

if you switch to full synthetic lube it does help a little bit

I have a 2001 and it does clunk when shifting from 1st to 2nd. As someone else said it happens at lower RPM's and shifts smooth as silk in the higher RPM range (6-8000 & up). I did not buy the bike new so I do not know if it has always been this way but I have seen this same discussion all over the net so I would assume that it is inherent in this model. I did se some improvement with full synthetic oil.

If you are clunking too much from 1st to Neutral try giving the eng a quick rev after you pull the clutch in. This will break the friction and free up all the plates and stop the diven shaft from spinning as you make the shift to 1st. Works every time for me. Let me know if it works for you. 1-2 clunk normal.
