Hi, I'm new to this forum and ive been looking at this 2000 yamaha r1 for a while now and was wondering if any bike mechanics or anyone can help me. The situation is, the guy selling the r1 for 1700 says, the bike is not in good shape, but it runs very well, engine, tranni, wheels, forks are all good and it has 20,000 miles on it, says the bike was never insured so the bike still has a clean title. Based on this information, is there an approximate amount that i will be looking to spend at least or most around just so i have an idea. he says the frame is in good shape. I can ask him more questions but i don't know what kinds of things to ask over the phone to get a better picture of what condition the bike is in. But for now, if i can get an estimate of how bad im looking at or if its worth even fixing at 1700 for it. ALSO, cant afford a new bike or even a used bike thats more than 5000, and thats why im looking at this. So please let me know by leaving a message here or on AIM : sint0xix. Thanks.

You are probably not getting a lot of responses because folks don't want to go out on a limb and steer you wrong for something they've never seen. Try calling a mechanic and asking him to estimate it for you; right - he won't, for a good reason. Project bikes can be a blast and an endless money pit if you haven't considered everything and had it checked by a qualified person. 5 G's can buy a pretty decent bike, so you may want to keep looking unless you really want to take on a project. Sounds to me like you aren't ready for that, but it's up to you.

hard to tell without pics. if bike runs fine.. if it needs just plastic if could be fixed for about $8-1000 or so. maybe guages are broke, fairing stay is broke, headlights, subframe.. all this stuff is expensive. hard to guess at all.. you didnt give any description of bike at all.

take it to a mechanic that you know and have him look it over running compression tests.
