: I need help with two things.
Flat Spot 02-20-2007, 05:27 PM After riding today for roughly an hour I pulled my bike into the garage and put the kickstand down. 5 minutes later, I had some fluid (maybe water or thin oil) come out of smaller hose next to the kickstand. Is it oil? What is that drip hose for?
Second, when riding, I got on the throttle hard in second gear, and the engine revs went way up, but the bike slowly came up in power. Could my clutch be going bad? I wasn't holding the clutch lever in when I gave it gas. It did this twice.

Gas would be my guess for the drip. How many and what kind of miles on your bike would be my first question regarding the clutch.
Flat Spot 02-21-2007, 03:52 AM I was able to find details about the hoses in the R1 service manual. It apprears that the smaller hose is the radiator tank overfill hose. I did a coolant flush recently using 100% disstilled water and Red Line's Water Wetter, and I guess I have too much water in the system. The strange thing is that the fluid on the ground didn't evaporate like water does. It stayed there overnight and I had to clean it up with a towl. It was almost like a hair gel substance.
As far as miles go, the bike has 11600 miles on it. I bought the bike from a guy who liked to do burn outs on the rear tire. I rode the bike before I bought it and didn't feel any problems with the bike. It wasn't until yesterday when I got on the bike hard in a straight line that this problem occured. I put the 600 miles on it myself.

try it in 3rd mate.. but it sounds very much like your clutch is toast and needs a new set of friction plates.
Flat Spot 02-21-2007, 04:36 AM Let's say it is the friction plates. Do I need to have the whole clutch replaced, or do I just replace the friction plates? Any recommendations on brand or should I stick with OEM?
If I try it in 3rd and I don't get the same response, what could the problem be?

Good questions mate. Sadly i can only answer 1 of them. Basically you jsut need a set of friction plates. No iea how much for a Yam, but for a Ducati they are approx $175.
If it doesn't happen in 3rd.... well if it's the plates, it WILL happen in all/most gears, and usually i'd expect it when opening hard from about 6000... you'll get noise but little accelleration.
Assuming you're only swapping the plates, i can't see the OEM being an issue and you won't get much better/worse no matter what you choose really.
It 'could' be down to the previous owner using Fully Synth Oil, which often causes clutches to slip, so check with him if possible what he was running... and the swap it out for a nice Semi-Synth.
Flat Spot 02-21-2007, 05:29 AM Thanks for the information. The first thing I did when I bought the bike was do an oil change. I used Mobile 1 MX4T Gold Cap (10-40?).
1longR1 02-21-2007, 08:04 AM prolly replace all steels and fibers. ride bike, put it in 4th gear going like 15 mph. grab clutch, rev bike up, dump clutch. if revs shoot up and bike doesnt accel, then its for sure clutch. if revs drop immediately its not clutch. make sure you have some freeplay in the cable and its adjusted properly. when you pull lever you should be able to move leave a little before it actually pulls on cable. you should be able to fit a quarter in between perch and the lever before cable gets tight.
Flat Spot 02-21-2007, 05:48 PM After reading your comment, I wondered if my clutch cable was too tight. So tonight I went out and adjusted the cable to where there was nothing but slack in the link. I then noticed that my Pazzo clutch lever was too loose. I adjusted the 10mm nut on the bottom and tightened the lever up a little to where is was more linear with the pull (if that makes since). I then readjusted my clutch cable to where it had just enough slack to fit a dime in between the lever and the base before it started to pull on the cable. Hopefully I'll get a chance to ride it sometime this weekend and try it out. Thanks for everyones help. If it still slips, I'll change out the clutch plates just for fun.
