1longR1 02-26-2007, 08:11 AM Did you change all steel plates and fiber plates? did you use YAMAHA OEM parts? What did old clutch look like. Do you have any freeplay in clutch cable. i would take it to dealer and have them check the adjustment. not much that can go wrong with new clutch if you changed it all out. did you soak it in oil for at least 30 minutes to hour?

i changed the fibre plates with ebc heay duty i did not change the steel plates the old clutch wasnt that bad and i soaked them in oil first and i have adjusted the clutch cable to what the manual sayes

1longR1 02-26-2007, 01:11 PM i would replace steels or take them out and put them on piece of glass with some 500 grit sandpaper and make sure they are not warped. prolly best to replace them. also make sure you assembled them properly. did you reuse the piana wire and the little springs that go in basket first with the smaller first fiber plate? personally i do away with piano wire. you shouldnt have any problems if its all good. since you didnt replace steels, thats where i would start with.
sss r1 02-28-2007, 03:43 AM sorry for thread jacking , i also got a clutch problem , didnt want to start a new thread...(also 99 r1)
the clutch is not slipping , i got strange noises from the clutch basket at low rpm-first gear .what can cause it? its like something is loose there , or maybe those noises come from the gear? the strange thing is that it lasts only for a secund or 2,only in first gear when i'm starting to move forvard .

use a stethescope (or homemade one) to listen to that area. get you large screwdriver with plastic handle.. preferably i good screwdriver and not cheap old junky one. put metal to clutch or tranny side and put your ear up to the handle. listen for noises. it could be many things.. from broke plate, broke basket, spring in basket loose, teeth broken, bearing out, circlip on tranny may have broke or come off and 2 gears are touching intermittently to each other...... could be many things. best bet is to at least pull entire basket out of bike.. that way you can look at it all.. if you dont find anything.. then its in tranny.... and only way to check it is to pull motor. it might be something simple...and it might not.

thanx man , i guess i'll need to open things up after all :(
1longR1 02-28-2007, 12:14 PM its best bet... might find something might not.. but worth a shot anyway just to be safe. more than likely you wont find anything. prolly tranny noise. but who knows.

i checked it again today , i think it the tranny
but its strange that this only happens at low rpm ,above 5k it runs good .

black99r1 03-03-2007, 01:50 PM as far as clutches go i'm pretty harsh on mine i found when ya clutch gives up replace the friction plates with yammy bits and the metals if they show signs of over heating (bluein) or warp and fit an extra metal this makes the clutch heaver and a little snatchy but stronger and able to deal with all the donuts and wheelies you can thow at it well that my view might not be correct but works for me!!
